"Borikén" was the original name of the island (used by the Tainos, the natives of the island) until it was colonized by Colombus in 1493, which he renamed to "San Juan Bautista". Puerto Rico (which in English translates to Rich Port) was the name given to its main trading port that eventually became its capital. Over time, the names "San Juan" and "Puerto Rico" were used interchangeably so much by the people, we started to refer to the island as Puerto Rico and the city San Juan instead (thus how we ended up with its current name).

In gameplay terms, change the province name (I don't know its # ID) to "Borikén", and have "Puerto Rico" the dynamic province name to Castile/Spain.

Great suggestion. Are there other provinces like this that you know of?

Of the top my head, Tenochtitlan (replacing Mexico, capital of the Aztecs) would one that I noticed, but that is not my area of expertise, so I wouldn't know for certain. I would have to do more research for other provinces. Puerto Rico just stood out for me because (surprise) it's where I'm from. I know for a fact that for Haiti, the provinces of Tortuga and Les Cayes are not the indigenous names because Tortuga is Spanish and Les Cayes is French. I'll come back to you on those 2.

In general, I would like to see more dynamic province names in the new world. Some coastal provinces in Brazil start out with Portuguese names which bugs me a litlle, but again I would need to do some research to find their original names. Same for a couple provinces in Argentina and Peru. Florida doesn't have any dynamic names except St. Augustine, while most provinces in the 13 colonies, Louisiana and Canada do.

Sounds like a good idea :) We've tried to do this as far as possible in South America already. Please feel free to make more suggestions like it.

What provinces have you worked, if I may?

Mexico is only the name of the province though. The capital is already Tenochtitlan :) Mexico is as far as I know actually an indigenous name.

It's already the case in the setup we've got. Indigenous names are harder to come by that one would think much of the time. In fact for the inner parts of Brazil for instance it's hard even finding period names in Portuguese many of them have quite young urban centers even today. :)
I am sure the setup could be much improved with proper suggestions for native names though.

Do you think you guys could work on getting period names for the provinces in the khanates? more specifically Uzbek, a lot of them are russian or russian period and some I couldnt even find. Narym for example. Narym should be Zaysan probably (there's a city much north of the in game province called narym and i think this name got there somehow), after the lake and settlement near it

I'm sorry to derail the thread, but would it also be possible to have dynamic province names affect Custom Nations? It's a bit disheartening that my Leonese custom New World nation doesn't give Spanish names to the provinces it conquers.

Ah good to know. I forgot city names are a thing, since they seem so hidden (I actually went and started a game to check it out and you're right).

As for Hispaniola, I found this:
1920px-Copia_de_Cacicazgos_de_la_Hispaniola.png

I believe Marien and Jaragua would be appropriate names for the provinces of Tortuga and Les Cayes respectively (and have Tortuga the dynamic name for Castile and Les Cayes for France). As for Higuey, I think Barahonas works, so either would be fine really.

Very nice map ! However, not all islands were settled by the Taino Arawaks - in Lesser Antilles, Carib names would be more apropriate. Quick search through wiki, and I found that in many cases, original names are not forgotten. Thus:
Dominica - Waitu Kubuli (Carib name)
Antigua - Wa'ladli (Arawak name), Wa'omoni (Carib name), Wadadli (modern native name)
Guadeloupe - Karukera (Arawak name)
St. Kitts - Liamuiga (Carib name)
Trinidad - Iere (possible Arawak name)
St. Vincent - Youloumain (Carib name, interesting French spelling)
Jamaica - Xaymaca (Taino name)

Placenames on Cuba, like Guantanamo or Havana, are mostly indigenous.

Interesting case is Bermuda - as it was never settled by humans before XVI century, it still retains its first and only name ;)

Pretty sure there's a very long suggestion thread somewhere with ideas for colonial province names.
