Hi

Something that has always bothered me is that when a tag named after a province (for example Milan, Venice, or countless HRE minors) loses that province it keeps the same name. In one of my games, Geneva lost Geneva and spent centuries holding only Kamrach[1]. It would have made much more sense immersion-wise for it to change its name to Kamrach. Likewise when, for instance, Genoa loses its Italian holdings and is exiled to its Crimean colonies. Ideally the same flag and colors would be kept though, and of course if they retake their original capital their name would be switched back. Now that we have dynamic tag names I think this can be implemented. Would the community agree with such a thing?

Thanks!

Well, it makes some amount of sense that an exiled Milanese government would cling to its origin, just like the eastern Romans were called like that centuries after the loss of Rome.

I do think, though, that sometimes countries should rename themselves. About the situation I just talked about, there could be an event 50 years after losing the province by which the country is named that would ask for a more suitable name.

The main culprit for me is however how exiled colonisers thousands of kilometers from home still have their original names. Portugal in exile can be named Brazil. I think this event could be generalized into a mechanic.

What you are proposing is an expansion of the pre-existing "Fixed Capital" mechanic, where certain tags have a province that is considered absolutely integral to the nation (usually due to the tag being named after that province) and as such will always have that province as its capital, if possible.

A way to expand this mechanic would be to also make it so that tags that have "Fixed Capitals" will also value said province above all the others, refusing to give it up in a peace-deal unless they have no other provinces to give up: in other words, tags with "Fixed Capitals" would rather be OPMs or be fully annexed than lose their capital province.

In my opinion, "Fixed Capitals" mechanic could also be integrated to other mechanics, like government reforms, so it'd be more interesting to play around with than just be a simple way for specific tags to always have their capital in a province after which the tag is named after. Say, being a tag with "Fixed Capital" could enable a "City-State" government reform if the tag with "Fixed Capital" is an OPM, giving the tag strong modifiers for playing tall and retaining their independence in exchange of hampering its abilities to expand further.

You can also make a difference between the institutions of a City-State, which hinged heavily around the fact that those were the institutions of a particular city, and those of a bigger/different country.

If a City-State like Venice lost it's heart, it's dirigeants would have lost their homes and the source of their wealth and power. They would inevitably be challenged. You could almost design a disaster along those lines, as the other cities previously submitted to the central city would strive for dominance (or for independance).

On the other hand, a bishopric like Köln would probably just move on in a different church-controlled location without too much fuss.

Actually the bishopric of cologne/köln already moved from the city, a lot of prince bishops didnt rule the city their bishopric were based in, usually because burghers throwing them out.

It's not supper uncommon countries are named after stuff they don't actually control anymore, or using kind of symbolic names based on dynastic or legacy claim. However now with dynamic names becoming a thing this could be looked at

Thr only tags that make sense to be name bound are city states.

All other tags such as Theocracies, Monarchies and even larger republics to some extend would likely keep carrying the name they had.

For example as you mentioned i believe the county of geneva lost control of gevena ages ago and became part of Savoy as Genevois.

Or how the titles of Duke of saxony shifted around over centuries from their homeland.
