I'd like to make a recommendation: if this interview is happening in 1946, you should use the past tense instead of the present. It's a little disorienting. You could also try to work a little more on your grammar. I'm not bashing, just trying to help. :)

Can't say I have a high opinion of either Boris III or Filov (he was a major advocate of Bulgaria joining the Axis in our timeline). I hope a democratic party wins in 1938.
That's cool with me. I'll try better on the next updates. :)

I don't mind if you guys post your corrections/criticisms or you send them by PM so that it doesn't derail the thread.

A Bulgarian AAR, interesting. I Subscribe.

Anyway i've never been satisfied by having Filov and co in power in KR Timeline in 1936. These guys were non-partisan and nominated because they were Boris's men and because the country's political system has collapsed with the Zevno coup and the King counter-coup in 1935.

Im'not bulgarian nor specialized in Bulgarian history, so i can be wrong, but i think that with a Bulgarian victory in WW1, the Zevno has no chance to make a Coup, so no Filov in 1936.
I'm not specialised in it too so I can't say much. I just make do with what I get. Thanks for subscribing.

------------
About the update, it won't be around until the weekends. I'm fairly busy with RL work. :(

Democracy ended in Revolution*. I think Bulgaria will be much stronger without it.

*I'm not forgetting Germany. The Kaiser and the DKP rule Germany with a strong guiding hand.

~ The Warrior-King ~

Extracts from the “Light Army Operations” by Ivan Vulkov

stromtroopers_zps7d340099.png

German Stormtroopers

“A rethink of our current strategies and tactics is required to prevent the stalemate that have occurred on the Franco-German Front during the Weltkrieg. […] While the Russo-Central Powers Front have been fluid, it cannot be guaranteed that the possible war against Serbia, Rumania, or Greece, or a combination of the three would result too on a fluid warfare.”

“New German infiltration tactics were developed to break the stalemate during the latter days of the war, but, for some reason, have been abandoned in favour of breakthrough-by-armour and superior direct and supporting firepower against the entrenched opposition.”

“Armour is not a weapon that we can field in huge numbers, thus it is more economical and more practical for our land army to developed infantry-based tactics using German-developed infiltration tactics […] They would be a helpful source of information on reforming our own land army against the restrictive geography of the Balkans.”

“Basic principles of infiltration tactics is the use of reconnaissance to spot the weakest links in the line. […] To increase the effectiveness of the recon troops, they must be equipped with horses or motorised vehicles, if possible. […] exploit these weak points with shock troops, akin to the Sturmabteilung of the German Army, to blow a hole on the enemy's defences.”

“...the destroyed defences will be exploited with mobile units such as cavalry or light infantry, and attack the enemy rear...”

“...promoting flexibility and effectiveness of our forces [...] the NCOs of the recon and the storm units must be given more responsibility and decision-making as the fluidity of mobile warfare demands quick action and reaction.”

“Thus, Light Army Operations demands infantry-based forces to burst through the weak points of the line, and exploit the hole in the defences with smaller mobile forces. […] Manoeuvre is imperative. Speed is of the essence.”

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sofia. Two years after His Majesty's death.

This neo-Byzantine style building was completed in 1912, it serves the Patriarch of All Bulgaria. The largest cathedral in Bulgaria, and one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world, that can hold roughly 10,000 people. No mass is being conducted. Visiting worshippers populate the building, dispersed in an irregular pattern. One of the visitors is Ivan Vulkov himself, the writer of Light Army Operations and other well-acclaimed books following it. These are still the approved textbooks for the doctrine of the Bulgarian land army. He is one of the generals chosen by the General Staff to oversee the reformation of the army. After a quick prayer and a very short chat, he described the reformation.

“Alright. The cavalry units were separated from the infantry, and became independent. Two independent cavalry divisions under the Cavalry Corps. It was a shock for the old guards. Cavalry and infantry have always been together since the dawn of time, they said. They thought I was crazy, but looking on a more strategic outlook, the cavalry's speed and mobility is hindered by the sluggishness of the infantry. You really need the cavalry to move forward ahead of the infantry to exploit the exposed rear of the enemy.”

-and His Majesty requested to be in command of one of these cavalry units

“Correct. It triggered a heated discussion because the penetrating forces would be in danger and expose when they stab into the enemy's rear. But His Majesty has insisted that he directly commands one of the cavalry divisions. It was the end of discussion. I placed him in direct command of the 1st Cavalry Division along with his Personal Cavalry Convoy*, and also with our only panzer brigade that we have. Could you believe that? They placed our only panzer unit onto some infantry division?!”

cavalry_zpsc91d252f.png

*Personal Cavalry Convoy is the bodyguards unit of the Tsar.

Was it a problem that His Majesty was not in the HQ most of the time? Considering that the Tsar is the head of the armed forces.

“I do not think so. The Tsar is technical the head of the military, but really, it's the General Staff that plans and executes operations.” he sighed “And His Majesty really preferred this arrangement - to be in the thick of the fight rather than sitting in the HQ. It really concerned a lot of people.”

What do you think of His Majesty? Regarding his martial prowess?

“Well... he was.. he was new to martial command back then, but he learnt quick. I didn't see any issue-”

You can speak freely, sir. I swear.

“...”

You'd think we'd bug a cathedral this big?

He laughed. “Alright. Pardon me for saying this then, but... he was not just inexperienced, he also - how should I say this properly - lack any sign of skill. He was well-versed on the old textbooks on defence, but aside from that, not much I'm afraid. But like I said, he learnt as he fought. Some of us used to get worried that His Majesty would boil during the thick of the fight and charge a fortified position with his personal cavalry.” he let off another chuckle.

1st-cavalry_zps21a65b88.png

The First Cavalry Divisions with the 1st Panzer Brigade
and the Personal Cavalry Convoy, with the Tsar commanding it directly

I see. Any other changes aside from the cavalry and His Majesty's appointment?

“Not much. Just some division transfers to balance the First Army and the Second Army. The Ministry have allocated budget on the production of another cavalry division, and more infantry divisions to strengthen the army corps.”

armyoob_zps12526ad6.png

Corps positioning themselves along the borders

“There wasn't any changes in the navy, aside from the promotion of Ivanov as a Vice Admiral, and the Air Force was separated between the bombers and the fighters. During the 1936 reform, we have two pre-Weltkrieg Dreadnoughts, five cruisers, and ten destroyers. There's another five destroyers in the Black Sea. Not impressive. Only good against the Belgrade Pact, no match against the others.”

navyoob01_zpsf2eb155c.png

Business have ended for now, and the discussion turned into small chat. Then he interject “Hmmm... thinking about it, we know the DS couldn't completely bug such a huge cathedral like this, but maybe you have some tiny microphone there in one of your pockets. No?” he gave a heartily laugh

The Arab states; Egypt, the Hashemites, Oman, and Yemen, have gathered in Cairo for the Arab Congress that the Egyptians have set up with no expenses spared. The once in a lifetime event has to be the most grandiose that Egypt have hosted since eternity. The event was more than just cultural - a celebration of Arab culture and customs, it is also political and aggressive - a desire for war.

They were openly plotting against the Ottoman Empire. They planned on liberating all Arab lands in the Turkish empire. The claimed lands were divided between Egypt and the Hashemites. Egypt claimed all the lands that Muhammad Ali once tried to grasp. Syria, Palestine, and Jordan. The Hashemites took everything else south of the Euphrates River.

In response, the Ottomans suspended the constitution. Almost immediately, the Sultan's police and military have made sweeping crackdowns on legal and underground Arab presses, and arrested key individuals connected to Cairo or Riyadh and given no trial to proclaim their innocence. The empire went head on to face the growing tide of Arab nationalism.

The quick bloodless revolution in Ukraine have overthrown the foolish spineless king that allowed the Sydicalist Khrushchev to set up a government. However, many expected that the red regime will be stomped out by Germany, just like what they did in Russia. The Syndicalists in London and Paris give their full support and their congratulations, but they expected the same too, they cannot protect Ukraine if Germany invades and destroys the infant Syndicalist country. Amazingly, Germany paused when Khrushchev announced in his shocking speech that he and the Ukrainian proletarians will build what he called “Socialism in One Country”, and professed that Ukraine will take no side nor alliance on the international stage, nor will they export any revolutions. Khrushchev's gambit paid off as Germany left them alone so not to spark a crisis against the Syndicalist West, not while they are currently suffering from the crash.

Horrified by the abysmal condition of the national infrastructure, the Tsar and his government have started a development program to build new roads and to improve existing ones. However, due to the lack of capital, the Bulgarian government cannot afford the project and have printed more Levs into circulation. The project was initiated, but the government hoped that the damage caused by the minting wasn't that significant.

John Atanasov, a second generation Bulgarian immigrant born in the United States, have made a risky venture of returning to the country of his parents which he never seen before. His rather affluent life in the United States has been ended by the eruption of the Second American Civil War, and has restarted his life in his ancestral home. Not was all rosy for Atanasov at first as he had difficultly finding employment in crash-stricken Bulgaria. He then took a job as a clerk on an office, and after that, gained the attention of the government with his uncompleted computer calculating machine. The government took him. Atanasov and his faculty soon became the most effective section in the research department.

Yup. I'm very noobish on doctrines (as you can see from Middle Republic AAR), and since I'll be sticking to infantry, I picked Light Infantry because of the Infiltration techs. I don't mind discussion how good firepower is, I have zero idea about the changes between HOI2 and DH.

I think Light infantry focus will come in handy in the mountainous terrain of the Balkans. Also Romania, Serbia, Greece (and maybe the Ottoman Empire?) are not much of Panzer-focused nations. Very interesting AAR in a typical beautiful Zzzzz...-layout by the way!

Nope, it's absolutely correct. :)

A nice update. Those Serbs need to be taught a lesson ;). As you say, tanks make no sense in the mountainous Balkans, not to mention that Bulgaria can't afford them.

Hopefully the heroes of Lozengrad and Edirne will not have died in vain.

A small nitpick, though: Orthodox church services are called liturgies, not masses (those are Catholic).

If I recall correctly the light infantry/minor power doctrine tree will bite you in the endgame as it only gives you half of the second cluster of doctrines, the techs shared by all three paths. The British/French trees lead into the NATO endgame doctrine. The Light Infantry path is still powerful for the night fighting bonuses, which will really help you against the mostly foot-mobile enemies that surround you.

~ The Belgrade Pact ~

Extracts from the “Light Army Operations” by Ivan Vulkov

“Due to our circumstances, and the size of the nations – both us and the enemy, a coherent centralised command is possible and should be pursued. A Light Army such as the Bulgarian Army can afford to form a centralised structure without sacrificing inefficiency [...] To achieve the aims and objectives of the war, a single grand strategy that conducts operations which fulfils the end of the strategy...”

“...with the operations drafted by the general staff, and conducted under the supervision of the general staff.”

“Indirect fire support must be reformed. […] A single artillery brigade on each division is optimal. […] The brigade formations allows the new indirect fire support to provide on-demand indirect fire...”

“The role of this new fire support system, is necessary to suppress the enemy, which allows our assault troops to advance under fire. […] This close coordination between the infantry and the artillery greatly enhance the effectiveness of our infiltration tactics, and solves the dilemma of the lack of armour which protects the infantry advance.”

“Thus, the issues that were visible on both sides during the Weltkrieg can be prevented if the procedure is followed.”

“However, our reliance on infiltration tactics as our main method to defeat the trenches of the Weltkrieg would be difficult for our soldiers even with on-demand fire support. Thus, it is necessary to instil personal courage and Bulgarian élan to each individual soldier – even to the lowly conscripts […] Constant training, discipline, and short lectures on Bulgarian martial tradition and history will espouse our soldiers on engaging infiltration warfare with full élan and confidence.”

“The educational system of the officer corps must also be reformed. […] the removal of university courses that are integrated within our military college education is imperative.”

“...it speeds up the education of the officer cadets with our sole focus on military modules, allowing quick regrowth and replacement...”

Now. What happened to the Pension Scandal?

Georgi Kioseivanov: “His Majesty, Tsar Ferdinand, complained about his “paltry” pension. I thought Filov was been reasonable regarding the matter. I'm not sure what [Tsar Boris] thought, but, for me, the choice was obvious to him – that he had no choice. He can't go against his father, that would have been a bigger scandal if he did. So, Filov was humiliated, and that became an opportunity for His Majesty to finally remove him. He did. You can call that a classic checkmate, if you ask me.”

tsarscandal01_zpsdf773821.png

And the replacing PM?

“Konstantin Muraviev. That was a big surprise”

bulministry02_zpsec50988e.png

I bet you weren't pleased

“One of His Majesty's most loyal servant. That's what made him the PM. He was gutless though, and still is. He did nothing during the remaining term except did what His Majesty told him to. In effect, His Majesty had almost complete control of the country. Like I said, checkmate.”

The Bulgarian economy have recovered in a steady gradual process. Throughout 1936 and reaching to March of the next year, economic stabilisation was the main goal of the kingdom. State intervention and the resumption of foreign investment in Bulgaria have made leaps on restoring the country to its pre-crisis strength. Any progress made is one step up against her hostile neighbours.

bulstab01_zpsc6191239.png

The fruits of the extensive infrastructure program now starts to appear. New networks of roads and telephone lines were established even with the low number of automobile and telephone ownership in some provinces. Military infrastructure was also improved.

rhdopemounts_zpsfb08990e.png

Rhodope Mountains, Southern Bulgaria

Do we really have to go all the way up here?

“Why not? It's good for the health!”

Colonel Draganov is the head of the 5th Directorate – government security and protection – of the Darzhavna Sigurnost (State Security). The Colonel was promoted as the head when the previous one was expelled in the wake of the investigation which ended with nothing. A normal thing for any other case, but for the previous young Tsar who mysteriously passed away, it was a PR disaster for the intelligence department. Draganov was fortunate enough not to be one of the members of the Fifth to be involved in the case. He leads the way, hiking the Rhodope mountains, and recounting the events that led to the 4th Balkan War during his work within the 1st Head Directorate – foreign intelligence - before he was transferred to the Fifth.

“Things started to boil up north. The Reds with their second international congress have made Germany nervous. It seemed, from our reports when I was in the First [Head Directorate], that the Germans were retreating on all fronts to strengthen their home front. The Western Front. It made sense to me, of course. They have approached Austria-Hungary, [North] Italy, and the Netherlands to reassure them of their worries... ”

germany01_zpsb82e4eca.png

“...but that reassurance went out of the bloody window when the Romandy Crisis happened, the Swiss turned to Berlin for protection from the French. Berlin backed down. It was, without a doubt, embarrassing.”

swiss01_zpsdaad632d.png

But they can't fight the French yet

“Yeah. True. But that's the thing. Why are you sending promises all over, and then one of your own turned to you and you ignore them? If they couldn't protect the Swiss, I asked to myself, how can they protect the others? How can they protect us from our enemies?”

...the Belgrade Pact

“Damn, right. A triple alliance designed to neutralise us, and they weren't very subtle about it. Our former allies abandoned us to the Pact. We were alone.”

belgradepact01_zps8d507b07.png

Alright. As a former-officer within the First, did you have access to information regarding troop strength of the Pact before the war began?

“Absolutely.”

“The Rumanians were the largest. At first, our estimates were at a conservative rate of 10 divisions, later it jumped to 15. This made them the largest of the three. Not to mention, they have the longest frontier that have been a headache for us.”

inteligr01_zps0076468b.png

I took the screenshot later on during the war. Which shows a lower number than it suppose to be.

“The Greeks got 10. But the narrow Kozani front prevented them from utilising it against our superior forces.”

intelgre01_zps251810ca.png

“Lastly, the Serbs, with 11 divisions. They were more dangerous than the Greeks. No narrow front. So they can strike us while we were busy with the Rumanians.”

intelser01_zps4f7ad572.png

That's a total of... at least 36 Belgrade Pact divisions. And our forces?

“Twenty four.”

I whistled at the numbers Did the government worked on some counter-measures?

“I don't know all of those they did. But I know personally that they have set up a military parade all of a sudden. A show of force against the Pact. A warning, and they hoped that it deterred them. Of course, it didn't worked. They got brave after Germany and friends weren't around.”

parade01_zps6a1a6b80.png

The armed revolt in Dobrudzha. Did you know who instigated it?

“Uhhh.. Bucharest? I thought it was obvious.”

Yes, it was. I mean, was it confirmed that it was Bucharest or was it independently done?

he shrugged as we reach the hill top. He point at a certain spot, telling me that we'll take our spot there “I don't know. I was never in the Second [Head Directorate] to know that out, but after what happened there, the Belgrade Pact declared war anyway.”

~ The Fourth Balkan War ~

Fighting soon erupted across the Bulgarian-Rumanian frontier, with Dobrich taking most of the fire. The rebellion wasn't quelled yet, and Iron Guard troops surge into the province to aid their brothers. The Greeks attacked the Bulgarian positions in Kozani. The attack started to lose its momentum, and reinforcements are coming from Thessaloniki. The Serbians made no move so far.

frontline01_zps7bddfc5a.png

In the Aegean, the proud Grand Fleet stood no match against the Greeks. Its shipping lanes are wide open for the Bulgarians to raid, its coastlands open to bombardment.

battle01_zps943cacdc.png

Back in the borderlands, reinforcements flooded into Dobrich, with the Tsar in command, blunting the main Iron Guard attack. As the weaker and undisciplined Rumanians halted, the Bulgarian initiated a counter-attack into Bucharest. The 2nd Cavalry Division have burst through in the western end of the frontier, and now galloping towards Ploesti and its oilfields.

battle02_zpse72cb296.png

Eight days later, Bucharest was captured, and 5 Iron Guard divisions (2 cavalry and 3 infantry) were encircled and destroyed. A glorious victory for Bulgaria!

The Rumanians have laid down their arms in the morning of the 12th of May 1938. The most powerful member of the Pact was defeated.

The victory against the Rumanians have swelled the public's positive perception towards the war, and their approval towards the Tsar and his government soared. The propaganda machine is in full spin. Dissent was drowned out by the celebration.

Extracts from the “Light Army Operations” by Ivan Vulkov

“Unlike the vast territories of Germany, the Ottomans, or Russia, Bulgaria is a relatively small nation, and any defensive line lost would be fatal to the outcome of the war. For instance, if Pirot or Vidin falls to the attacking Serbians, Sofia would be left wide open.”

“This is where the use of trench warfare would be proved invaluable.”

“It cannot be stress enough that the military must have the attitude that it will not give a single foot of our sacred soil to the enemy.”

“...it is imperative that the soldiers will be trained on basic trench construction with supporting engineers on each brigade formations to decrease the time required to establish new trenches when the lines have shifted.”

“To improve the effectiveness of the trench system, a rethink on the placement of machinegun positions must be done too. The following reforms suggested are...”

“A slight adjustment on the indirect fire-support, when on defence, is also required.”

“...this shall make the divisional artilleries more effective on defensive battles.”

“In accordance to what was mentioned before, the Bulgarian military must be centralised and its organisational hierarchy must be strong and well-defined...”

In the 29th of May 1938, the offensive against the Serbians started. The attack was led by the Tsar, himself, fought against the entrenched opposition in the mountainous province of Bor. Nearly a month later, the enemy was forced out and the Bulgarians are advancing to Belgrade.

battle07_zps2ac6ea42.png

Two weeks later, the capital was captured. The Serbians are collapsing, and in low morale. By the 6th of July 1938, one hour after midnight, Serbia has surrendered to Bulgaria. One of our rivals in the Balkans fell, but at a huge cost for our people. It is still a worthy victory for the Tsardom.

Bulgarian troops assembling in Kozani for the battle of Larissa

In the afternoon of the 19th of July, the huge amount of forces assembles in Kozani, this has not gone unnoticed by the Greeks. The gathered forces have burst into the enemy lines in Larissa. The attack was named, Operation Krum, after the ancient Bulgarian king. The objectives of Krum are the encirclement of the fortified area in Metsovo, and a straight dash towards Athens.

opkrum_zpsecf98c87.png

It took a month to reach Athens due to the fanatical resistance of the enemy. Nonetheless, the objectives were reached. The capital fell, and the fortified position in Metsovo is being encircled.

battle10_zps96cc0ac1.png

By the 3rd of September 1938, 8 o'clock in the evening, the Greeks surrendered at last. Victory! Victory! Long Live the Tsar! Long Live Bulgaria!

The Belgrade Pact was annihilated without help from the Tsardom's allies, with the exception of the honourable Austrian volunteer forces. However, it was a very costly war. The reserve pool was depleted from 120,000 men at the start of the war, to just 25,000 men (note: the production of the new artillery brigades must be taken into account).

mapbulgaria02_zps461e1eca.png

disbandunit01_zps9f14436c.png

The Tsardom now takes a deep breath. The election was postponed by the Tsar during the war to prevent political instability. Now that the war ended, the election have to presume as promised. There is also the issue of what to do with the conquered nations of the Pact. Meanwhile, their eastern neighbour is in a problematic situation.
