Remember to save the game!

Ive gotten into a bad habit lately, playing so fast (also was doing an AAR recently) and was using a single save. And sure enough after a crash the file was corrupted and i was ski-rewed. I may just go back to auto saving monthly. Anyway just wanted to share my horror story, especially with the new guys. Nothing like putting a ton of time in and having nothing to show for it.

What I have started doing is saving right after important events, or if I complete a key technology or build series.

When you fail to have any issues you can get complacent, and I was playing fast. Mistakes on my part!

I autosave monthly and manually on 1st Jan each year and then again before major events. So "DOW Poland" and after events so "Fall of France" are save names for me.
By doing it on 1st Jan each year I can go back and experiment with alternative ways to do things like organizing my generals.

I autosave every month, plus do as stated above, save before decisions ect. In older versions of the game autosave used to sometimes give me a ctd, but not for a loooong time.

I used to do all that, but you get complacent as years go on, especially when things are going well and your playing quickly. Im back to backing everything up!

I autosave every month prior to the break-out of war, and then every week after that - once things get going, I can spend half an hour (or more) on a single week (I'm a fairly slow player), so a month lost in autosaving could be 2+ hours of play, and fairly painful to go back to (although whenever I have got complacent and done this, it's always interesting seeing how differently things play out). Commiserations at the save file loss Oliver, I feel your pain (I didn't get habits like this without similar experiences m'self).

Normally I constantly save, but I was doing an AAR, and doing it at the same time, so my attention wasnt there. You should always play the game out first then do the AAR imo... Oh well next time!

I'm doing the same sorts of manual saves.

A good point Axe99 about the player's style. My micro battle-fronts are major investments...I've started doing the same now.

And sure enough wouldnt you know I had a crash again, no corrupt file, but thank god Ive been saving a ton again.

Glad you were ready this time. Wonder what's causing the CTDs? RU getting massive temp-file dumps? Since Jan/15 I've been continually optimizing because of huge amounts of files and data getting dumped into my temp folders from Steam and other sources too I guess. Just thought I'd mention that...some of the dumps are huge and apparently will stack too. Just a thought.
