Ok I got it to start working. Had to delete the existing entry in lastpass and let it create a new one.

I wouldn't be surprised if nobody knew. They basically exchanged the whole software. Some random part did the trick.

sure, but, the bug remained after the change, and after the first, second, third, and I think, fourth update. then the fifth update, they said they'd think they'd solved it (also what they said after updates 1 and 4) and, they actually did! Now the change + updates 1&4 might have been needed to make update 5 work; but, it did work.
