I'm currently playing as Count Noster, who is count/duke of the Colovian Highlands in the Colovian Estates. He is part of the Dor dynasty, which is the same one Reman I belonged to. However, that got me thinking, where does the name Dor actually come from? Most sources call the dynasty the "Reman Dynasty", which I understand would be strange to use because then it would be "Reman Reman I of the Cyrodiilic Empire".

But another name I always see Reman get called is "Reman Cyrodiil". If Cyrodiil is his last name why is his dynasty called "Dor"? Why not the "Cyrodiil Dynsaty"? Where is the name "Dor" actually mentioned? I know the emperor after Reman I was named "Brazollus Dor" but isn't Dor in that just part of his first name?

I don't really know an answer to this but if you own the customization pack DLC you can change your dynasty name and symbol if you are top liege of all of it's members. You can rename it to Cyrodiil or Reman.
Whatever you want to name it, really.

I believe it was changed to Dor because of the whole last name as a first name. Reman Reman(now don't that look funny!)

Yeah, that's the gist of my question. I understand that using Reman would be dumb, but why not Cyrodiil rather than Dor? I'm just really wondering where the name Dor comes from lore wise. Most books I've read on the Imperial Libary call him Reman Cyrodiil. According to Remanada, Reman even says that "I AM CYRODIIL COME". http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Remanada

Besides that, second emperor Brazollus Dor gets called "Brazollus Dor Dor" in the family tree which is amusing.

As already mentioned. The Dor comes from Emperor Brazollus Dor, the Emperor crowned after Reman I. I noted the Dor Dor too haha.

It sounds more like Brazollus is the first name and Dor the family name, to me at least. I figure that's where they got it from. But yeah, I also agree that Cyrodiil would have been just as apt.

Reman Cyrodiil

then dynasty change to Dor under Brazollus?

I'd also go with Dor, personally. After all, Imperials are modelled after Romans, and Romans had a pretty strict set of surnames, prominently excluding names which include place names (like "of Wessex", "von Habsburg" or "de Cantabria"). So "of Cyrodiil" or even just "Cyrodiil" seems a bit out of place compared to other Imperial names. However, that's a very minor nitpick, especially in a world where people can conjure whole armies out of their hat.

Except in the case of Cyrodiil, the place was named after Reman Cyrodiil. It wasn't called Cyrodiil prior to Reman. Cyrodiil could be a surname that ended also being the name of a province in honour of the ruling dynasty.

I was wondering that very thing, Darth, but couldn't find anything conclusive on my own.

That would mean...
of Cyrodiil = Cyrodiil (Please don't argue that its not)
...that they would be two distinct names.
Cyrodiil the Province gets its name from Light of Man Cyrodiil.
The of Cyrodiil minor house gets its name from the land they were born in to.

The alternative is that the of Cyrodiil near-peasants are of the same dynasty as the god-hero of the Second Empire, or that the name is completely meaningless and without value.

You need to provide source for these kinds of arguments.

Cyrod being Ayleidoon for "Heartland", and iil appears a couple of other times as Ayleid place names (Delodiil and Celediil). One could theorise that iil meant "City" or something like that in Ayleidoon (like stadt); hence Cyrodiil (City of the Heartlands > the Imperial City), Delodiil (City of Delo, whatever that is), Celediil (City of Celed) >> RL examples Karlstadt (Karl's City), Neustadt (New City).

Well, why does that "of Cyrodiil" dynasty even exist? Shouldn't those emperors be part of the Alessian dynasty?
There are no emperors in the "of Cyrodiil" dynasty. "of Cyrodiil" just states where was the person born.

E.g. if someone was born in let's say Paris in the middle ages and was a peasant, his name would be let's say "Pierre of Paris".

Amiel IV, Gorieus V, Herta, and Hestra are all part of the "of Cyrodiil" dynasty and Emperors of the Cyrodiilic Empire in my game's history files.
Well that's unexpected. So there are apparently many "of Cyrodiil" dynasties since in the one I've found there are only 3 members and they all are Arch-Primates.
