Firstly are their multiple versions? The only one I have ever recieved is "Religous tensions are rising in your realm" and it usually results in a revolt.

First I'm curious to know what factors cause this particular eent to occur.

Secondly, is their an event that doesnt end up in revolt most of the time?

There are several conversion events.

The one you got is when one of the classes rises up in revolt. The more power they have, the more likely they are to revolt. If the Nobles rise in revolt, there is a 75% chance of conversion, less for the other classes.

There are also peaceful events, like when your Diocese Bishop decides to try and mass convert a province.

There are also generic mass conversion events. To increase chance of these firing, Clergy class needs above 33% power.

Hmm, I've not seen a peaceful conversion event fire, and I specifically went around upping clergy power in all my Spanish Muslim provinces. What happened instead was the clergy rebellion events (which only have 40% chance of conversion, I believe). Is there any other requirement for that event that I might be missing?

By the way, is there any benefit to converting your provinces to Christianity? I didn't notice any income reduction from non-state religion provinces like in EU3, and those provinces seem capable of raising pretty decent armies also. So why pay the price of converting them, outside of roleplaying reasons?

The piety bonus can be nice, as it would burn off some reputation allowing you to conquer more muslim provinces which you can then convert for more piety.

I can't really think of another way outside of crusades to ramp up your piety.

Because if you don't they will rise in revolt eventually :) ... but there is no difference between having a muslim and christian province.
