SIlly situation popped-up that has a bit (sarcasm) of an ahistorical flavour.

Poland, under duress, attacked by Austria, Bavaria, Spain, Swede and Russia (me) is beset
by turmoil (stability -2). The rebels in the Ukraine declare independence and form a
free Ukraine (ironically in 1647 .. which is very historical).

Now the clicher.. Ukraine has state religion of ... Sunni Moslem????? WTF
Now i don't know about you guys .. but I am pretty sure Ukraine ought to be
christian . I'm also curious that the Keremenjug area of poland (which is now a part
of Ukraine) is moslem. I was under the impression thsi was cossack territory (hence orthodox)
.. hmm something for the historical patch.

The idea of a mosque in Kiev seem ssoo funny though..

Ukraine should be Orthodox
Kremenchug starts as part of Crimea and, therefore, is Muslim (just like Kuban).

I would hope there would be a little bit of randomness involved in province religious choices, so that things owuld not be 100% predictable.

Not that I expect Artois to be Sunni & Lancashire to go Shi'ite, but provinces near a religious border should have a chance to be one thing in game A & something else in game B.

Its a random event, influenced by wheteher or not there are any bordering provinces with different religions.

Weird. I remember though that when I played Fantasia as Ukraine, I was sunni-moslem. Which I think is very strange as well...

Yep Ukraine has a moslem prov. karamanjug.. but it always has been a part of poland not crimea. I would really like to see orthodox conversions made possible. I dont mind a bit of randomness in religion (ie protestant vs catholic Artois) but a Moslem Ukraine.. nahh.. been christian since Olga and Vladimir Monomakh (10th and 11 century). teh moslems and poles were more like overlords.

If we start getting a moslem papacy then....

In revolt.txt it´s set to 'orthodox' correctly. So this should indeed be a bug.

The revolting nation takes the religion of the province of its capital.

Well... I recommend Jan Zamoyskis excellent book on the History of Poland-Lithuania. I have forgotten the title though. But I remember that the title was telling.

Now the religious situation in Poland-Lithuania was very very heterogenous. Actually there is a picture in that book of the Mosque in Kiev! Now the Ukraine is the covering name of a number of different possible 'nations' as Cossacks polish-lithuanian nobles in the region called the Ukraine, zaporogian tatars (mainly moslems) etc etc.

From my point of view the picture in EU is correct, if though a bit reductive.

Yep that seems to be the problem. Ukraines capital is kamanajug(sp?) not ukraine.
While I do agree about the heterogeny of Ukraine give the various cossack seches and
assorted moslem groups. I just found it a bit of stretch. I have read quite abit on EE history
and my best estimate that im what was then considered Ukraine (not the whopper we but
based largely on the Kievan grand principality of Kiev .. the majority were christian.

1568 : (Stab -1) An Offer of alliance by Counter-Reformed Nations France, PLC, Papal States and Austria.

Guess which alliance I signed?

In my American version, revolt.txt has the UKR captial as 295 which is Ukraine. I have to wonder how the sunni province became the capital.

The other possible explanation is that Ukraine is the capital and somehow converted to Islam...

Nope Ukraine is not the capital.. but it is othdodox.. yet Ukraine's state religion is sunni moslem..

I just may edit the save game just so I can vassalize them..

It really just depends on the religion of the capital province. I´ve just seen Granade reemerge as a catholic kingdom as the Sierra Nevada had been converted while in Spanish hands.

(A funny situation, Granada holds all of southern Spain, Navarra, Catalonia and Aragon the north, all that is left to Spain is Castille)
