Just coming back to CK2 thanks to the lure of the expansion and ran into a curious quirk.

Tribal germanic, went republic. Everything is going great until one of my vassals has a religious revolt. No big, put down 12 already... oh wow that's a lot of peasants. :D

One bad battle later and they're rolling the armies up, since I'm republic now I can't raise tribal armies, and there's no mercs up in England so duh duh duuuh they win. Unfortunately this means they got the republic capitol which I thought would be game over but actually just bumped us one one region over.

Took back the old capitol right after but now the republic is stuck in the less than ideal location. Quite the danger, having a republic not on an island. Who knows who will wander by...

You became non tribal too early. It's a problem common with both players and AI from what I've seen. The fact that you can reform or switch from tribal does not mean you should.

Conversely I could have reformed sooner and then wouldn't have had the same issue since I'd have had more money and better troop numbers etc. The 5 extra event spawns pushed the number of revolters over the top but that's neither here nor there. The key point is how the revolt thrashed the republic due to how inflexible the capitol province is.
