Here's what I mean with bad econ:

Only barely making even as a major not filling its forcelimit in 1600 is the very definition of having a bad economy. Trade goods are bad (3.5 for pelts, your most common non-trash product is nothing more but okay, and Iron also is a bit of a late bloomer), low Siberian development, and a horrible trade setup for Asia going through my hated Astrakhan node.
You need to target some rich land somewhere and invade, you have spread out over all the least productive land on the map which is tanking your economy. Important to get some sources of $$ before you fill out Siberia. And you left the only good Horde land (Astrakhan) to the only tribe you haven't absorbed!

If you post the % control you have in each of those nodes, I think it will be below 50% for most of them (except Novgorod). You need to claim centres of trade during wars and upgrade them by making states in key locations. If you need more trade power to dominate a particular node, you can also give one or two Centres of Trade to the Burghers which will help a lot.

You don't have the best parts of the Astrakhan trade node, you should prioritize taking this land from Great Horde ASAP, it will immediately improve your economy.

Similarly, in Transoxiana the best part is Samarkand and when fighting wars around here you should claim provinces in a "snake" fashion towards Samarkand.

Have you developed your gold mine in Zlatoust? It could otherwise add 10 gold a month with a couple of hundred Diplo mana investment.

Have you tried not bothering with kiev and crimea and focused on getting trade steered from the far East and central Asia directly to Novgorod.

Depending on the situation both tend to be contested.

Also White sea is a great end node as only the British can access and you probably can push almost everything from Novgorod to it

PS And manufactories everywhere. Start with most expensive goods, considering trade power percentage as well. It's not very useful to build it in a province where you can steer only a portion of the value created.

I think another useful thing to do is to establish two colonies in the california trade node. You can just get the first expansion idea for the colonist, hold off on filling the whole thing out, and then between running multiple colonies at the same time and conquering natives, you should be able to establish Alaska and California quite quickly and then switch the idea to something more useful. Once you have established the colonies they'll expand on their own themselves and you can ignore them.

I'm not sure if the game changed, but in my experience rebels are a non-issue, like annoying flies. I don't know why so many people recommend Humanist or Religious to beat rebels if rebels are a minor annoyance? Beating the Ottomans in a war? Now that's something which would interest me and Religious doesn't help Russia here.

The only case where I am considering Religious is for a "Fortress Persia" run, hoping to attrition to death all enemies with Religion+Defensive in my mountain forts... but even in this case I am not fully convinced it will work. Let's see.

As Russia despite the initial thinking that this same strategy would be a good idea, it is not. You are mostly fighting on the South where there are no terrain modifiers and no terrible winter. If you, like me, likes to recreate the real expansion path of countries, then you will ally Sweden to safe-guard the north border and will expand to the South and to the East, so there is never any meaningful invasion of your country in the north the whole game...

So for Russia IMHO the best is Economic+Quality. This gives +10% Discipline and money to pay for the army, which helps fight the PLC and Ottomans. I don't see how anything else would be better.

IMHO the ideas/policies are unbalanced. Some are massively better than others.



getting CB is trivial, just a little spy time on the area you don't already have perma claim



Even without Third Rome I was able to convert without trouble like 10 provinces in 40 years with the help of Muskovy's +1% missionary strength. With the +2% that Third Rome gives via the Orthodox buffs then .... totally unnecessary.



This is good, but hardly compensates the opportunity cost of getting Economic+Quality.
1.30 massively changed rebels. They are way easier to manage than in previous patches, even with the massive amount of tags added to the game spawning more rebel stacks all over the place.

What is the bug? I have a current save going where I just did that.

1. You could've read the thread.

2. If you move your capital, all tc provinces in charters that contain provinces in the same subcontinent are removed from the tc. So that means that if you have Siberia in a TC, all those provinces will stop being TCs once you move to Tsargrad because the Siberian charter contains the area of Ural which is on the Eastern Europe Subcontinent.

Admittedly I would like to get religious asap as an Orthodox nation, and esp as Russia. But I also want to get to Admin 10, there is early coring to do, and only so many admin pts. So religious is usually my 2nd pick. Diplo pts are dear due a mighty 1 Diplo by the monarch. This usually pushes me to Military as my first idea group. The only question is which one between offensive, defensive, or aristo. And it depends on how the early game develops as to which one I take.

Oh, I didn't notice that your response was a link. Sorry about that and thanks for the info. I will have to make sure to take a long look at my trade companies.

I take quantity first as Russia.

Quantity gives -10% regiment cost and -5% land upkeep. That is a massive reduction in your largest expense. Combine that with the gold mine in Kazan and Russia is flush with cash until you can get a solid economy underfoot.

I agree with hiring a merc company off the bat. Keeps your manpower high. Keep them around for sieging and rebels.

I do grab trade also. Assuming you eat China, all those merchants funnel trade to beijing, and keep it from flowing to Europe.

And I grab economics too, because dev pushing Russia is so good it should be outlawed.
