Two commonly suggested things are allowing characters to pick which anti pope to follow and to allow the Ummayad to be anti-caliphs.

I think this and creating a dhali lama, autocephaly, and any other religious situations that involve multiple independent religious heads can all be worked in together under one medium sized adjustment.

On any characters page it shows their liege, heir, and significant other. I think we could also fit in a small portrait of their religious head. I'm talking about these:
dJiwkSU.png

Of course you could re adjust it.

Next to that you could put a little button to choose your religious head if there are multiple options. It'll then display a list showing all the choices you can pick. Certain religions could have a malus for having a different religious head but the same religion. Children will be born with the religious head of their primary parent and could possibly have it changed by their educator or friend, upon conversion you default to your leiges religious head, or the primary religious head.

Here's how it might work for different scenarios:

Catholic/Fraticelli: Pick a pope, an existing anti-pope or pick your own anti pope (listing in that order preferably). Rulers can demand their vassals change religious head to their own. Only the primary head can call holy wars.

Sunni/Shia: Allow the 'become caliph' option even if one already exists. Ummayads and Abbasids both start as Caliph but the Abbasids are the primary one. Add an option to become the primary caliph if you own mecca, medina, and jerusalem or if the other one stops existing. Major relation penalties with the caliphs you don't pick. Cannot pick another caliph if your liege is a caliph. Only the primary caliph can call Jihads.

Autocephalous: Generally you can only pick the leader designated to your the same way the base game does it king. Emperors who have their autocephalous leader as a vassal can pick their successor (like the byzantines did). No malus. In the patriarch system you can't pick which patriarch you're designated to but if you're an emperor and have your patriarch head as a vassal you can choose their successor.

Create a Dali Lama: If you're of the correct culture in tibet or mongolia and bhuddist after the mongol invasion you can pick a religious leader for your particular kingdom/empire and all your vassals must follow it.

Reformed religions: Kings and Emperors with their religious head as a vassal can pick heir successor

I hope this is a reasonable enough way to implement all these neat little features in one straight forward package. You could definitely put the religious head selection button on the religions page too but I think with the portrait it adds more clarity.

I like these ideas very much! I have suggested some of these suggestions myself in the past:)

I agree but connect it to christian branches not able to crusade instead of to Autocephalous leadership.

Reformed religions: Kings and Emperors with their religious head as a vassal can pick heir successor

Same as above. A vassal "crusader - pope" that you can pick at will is very powerfull and might easely be abused. Autocephalous leadership does not stop crusades during reformation.

Actually, the whole thing could be structured as a decision, with valid candidates based upon your character's religion, traits, government type etc. Thus a Zealous character might not be able to support an Anti-Pope while an Arbitrary and Cynical character might be able to support Glitterhoof.

Of course in 99% of cases your choice would be limited to the current Pope and current local Anti-Pope.
