I think those are just randomly generated courtiers. There's a lot of systems in place to prevent or at least minimize the ability of Argonians to change over.

Not sure, actually! I've never really interacted with the Worm Cult.

Why can't argonians be non-hist?

"Because of the birthing rituals in Black Marsh and the hatchlings' dependency on the Hist, it is considered rare for a hatchling to be born out of the province and away from the connection of the trees: but it is possible. One Argonian, named Ja-Reet, was born into slavery in the province ofMorrowind, and was deprived of the Hist as a hatchling, but eventually returned to Black Marsh with a Dunmer woman that he had married. Although able to function in other societies, he was described as "disadvantaged", or maladjusted, in Argonian society and unable to understand Argonian social cues and body language; this of course was blamed on his lack of connection to the Hist."

Sure, make it harder to do, but it seems like it should definitely be possible for the player to switch on their own choice.

"On their own choice" seems... off, for Argonian Hist. If they're born into it, then they're already part of the Hist hive. Their influences and decisions will be based in large part on the Hist. For Argonians born without the influence of Hist, I can see personal choice being a possibility.

Closest thing I can think of is Pureblood trait for Altmers. Perhaps a similar trait for Argonians that allow several advantages and boons among fellow Argonians if they're born within the boundaries of Black Marsh, but carries a Zealout-like inability to convert? That way, non-native Argonians still maintain their free will.

Gonna be honest, that sap and hive mind business is what's kept me from playing Argonians all these years :p

The interesting thing is that in the Elder Scrolls games I've played, the Argonians I've seen show as much individuality as any other race and make it sound like all Argonians are like that. I think their connection to the Hist just means the Hist is able to communicate with them from anywhere in Nirn, not that Argonians themselves have a hive mind. The reason why Argonians born in Black Marsh would be so fanatically dedicated to the Hist is because it's believed that the Hist are not only the source of their souls, but where their souls return to when they die to be implanted in another body or something. Beyond that, I believe I saw a video about lore where someone said it's believed that the Hist created the Argonians and that they could "kill any and all Argonians if they so wished to" while also comparing an Argonian abandoning their Hist religion would be the equivalent of a Mythic Dawn agent abandoning the Cult of Mehrunes Dagon. Apparently some people also claim the Hist come from Oblivion and arrived in Nirn before it was completely formed..... And that the Hist worship Sithis.
