Looking at the Chirper Monument thread got me wondering:

Are religions represented in the game at all? I doubt it. The way SC 2013 did was quite pointless, imo. This could be a fun mod if possible. Create your own religion (ex. the church of chirper) and there are other religions around the city and draw an infographic map based on religious views.

I think churches and other places of worship would be a nice addition to the game - after release (so they can finish up with the polish).

Here is what my idea would be to implement them: 2 types of places of worship.
1. Smaller churches, temples, etc. that can pop up in residential zones. They would have no impact on their surround and would include someone living there (like a resident priest - that would still go to work elsewhere during the week). They would end up being "eye candy" with no other function. Churches and temples could be assigned to different types of architectural styles (like European, Asian, etc); specific types could therefore be controlled via zoning. (and perhaps a "no-religion" policy for those that do not want to see a single church.

2. Larger churches, temples, etc. that are plopable. These would act like sports arenas and/or tourist attractions. Again, they would be "eye candy" per say and people could go about placing other landmarks if they should not want these.

I don't think is okay this to be turned into an almost political thing. I am religious but even if I were not the fact would still be that religion plays a big role in both a city and each individual living in it. Look at Spain, look at Mexico, look at an Arabic country or India: religion is well represented in the architecture and in the communities themselves. Sure, those are not like most of non secular north european/north american countries, so? Having churches and temples in a city is as normal as having roads. You don't like to have churches and temples because you are non religious, because you are a militant atheist? Fine, there should be an option to turn religion "off", I don't think it should be a major feature or have great gameplay impact, but it should be there.

Have you ever been in Spain?
Spain isn't a specially religious country, I don't belive so but it's true that in the South poeple usually is more religious.
Here, there are churches and cathedrals (beautiful ) but... what's the point? Isn't it common in North Europe or North America?
PS: Very few people usually go to church, and almost all of them are seniors. What about North Europe and America? I want to know :)

Why? It gave extra depth to Civilization, it should make City Builders also more realistic.

Religion can make sense in a game like Civilizations, but I just don't see how tagging residents with different religions is very useful in a city building game. White collar, blue collar, students, retirees, homeless etc is an interesting demographic because it means you need a variety of different services and industries to employ/cater for them. But religions? Don't really see much relevance in it within a city building game. It's like introducing religions to Train Tycoon... why?? lol

Having said that, it would be nice to see the different building architecture. But that could be introduced as a part of a DLC or Mod for Asian, Arabian and Indian style cities.

Every game I play has Bertrand Russell's Teapot floating around out there, un-see-able as ever.

But from a practical standpoint, I think it would be mechanically reasonable to have any kind of building, in the case of a church it would be one that could cause a mixture of happiness and unhappiness to local residence, be exempt of taxes and yet take in funds, be a stop for some of the hearses on the way to a cemetery, and yes provide for some different building styles to add to the cityscape.

However, given the contentious nature of religion I think it reasonable for the developers to simply step back from the subject and allow it to fall to the whim of those modders who wish to make them and those players who then choose to include them.

Agreed, leave it up to the modders. If the devs tried to implement it, some people would definitely raise hell! The chirpy thing was pretty intense, imagine what would happen when it's something that affects someone close to their heart.

You only add the top 5 religions, which can be changed with a mod. And the religious setup is only set up in the start. Once you start building, it is fixed.
OK. And if I will select 100% christians, will it be more like Eastern Orthodoxy, or more like Catholicism? Those groups has different architecture? Thera are also Oriental Orthodoxy and Church of the East? Each has different architecture, because they are from different parts of world. They have even different believes even, if they all believe in Jesus as son of the God!

No matter what religion will you choice, people will ask why this one, and not another.

No, thanks. Please, leave religion out of the game, and if you really want it there, create separate in-game only religion, like Bluebirdism or something like that ;) But even then some people will see some references to their religion and will comment about blasphemy. No, thanks. I don't think we really need it in game.

I don't know about America but I can speak for Northern Europe.

Here in Finland (in essence a very similar place to Sweden) people aren't very religious. Most of the population belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland (Finnish: Suomen evankelis-luterilainen kirkko, Swedish: Evangelisk-lutheran kyrkan i Finland), which is also the national church (its position is mentioned in the constitution and it is one of the two churches that have the right to impose church tax, the other is the Orthodox church). People don't go to church very often but most Christian holidays are celebrated, especially Christmas (Fin: Joulu, Swe: Jul). We have churches, some of them dating as far as the High Middle Ages (the christianization of Finland) and those are beautiful stone churches. We have only a couple of cathedrals, f. ex. the Helsinki Cathedral (Fin: Helsingin tuomiokirkko, Swe: Helsingfors domkyrka).

Again, like the rest of the game, Christianity would produce generalized looking churches. Eastern Churches might look different from Western churches, but they are still more similar to each other than, say, a Mosque or a Hindu Temple.

If people are not happy with that, then they can always mod in more detail. They can mod the different branches of Christian Churches if they would want to.

Actually even thinking about how policies would be added or directed in game thinking about churches. What do you think about having an policy then that allows no churches to be built in a certain district and then on the other hand for people who love to have lotsa churches be able to implement that policy where the game would add more churches to a particular district?

I prefer my solution. Just set Atheism to 100%, and you'll have no churches, temples or mosques. This is something that needs to be driven by demographics, not policies.

I don't think it would be easy to implement having religion in game without having an uproar and taking away from gameplay. Yes churches are a part of cities, but I've already seen Churches on the Steam Workshop. You will be able to plop whatever place of worship you want your Cim's to have or not have.

I don't want them to be plopables. I want them to pop up like in SCC and SC2000. I understand it can't be done for this release, but I'm suggesting it for a DLC. I don't think a Mod will be able to do this, as this requires some core changes: Churches are buildings that must pop-up in residential areas- but not too often, and they don't function like a regular residential building. To do this properly, it is something CO will need to add, because a mod can only interact with the logic that is already in the game (I think)

The only reason why I want to include a religion demographic, is because I don't want my European City to have too many Buddhist Temples, or my Middle Eastern city have more churches than Mosques. The only thing the religion demographic will do is to regulate the mix of religious buildings in your city.

Outside of video games there have been quite a few games that do use religion as the central theme.

One I remember from SPI was A Mighty Fortress which simulated the conditions around the Lutherian Reformation

Or more up to date, GMT Games brought out Here I Stand

pic353047_md.jpg

I find games that mix conflict, politics, diplomacy and religion quite interesting.

In city builders, not so much, but Churches, Mosques and Synagogues would be nice eye candy to have.
