I know nothing for certain, but if he said it... try looking in "the little red book". I think he said some other catchy statements in it such as, "religion is opium for the masses"

really? I could have swore I had heard otherwise.... I suppose that does make sense. Jeez... I'm all backwards today. :)

Examples, please ! I read somewhere he said it was an Arab who discovered America the Emir Ka (America in arabic). Is it true ? Then there's the anti-colonialist/imperialist rhetorics etc.

Actually, my father is a shipping agent, and one of his customers is the Libyan embassy in Sweden. They give him pictures of Khadaffi and stuff like that to have on the office! :D

yes and no.

On the Opium question:

Marx said: "Religion ist das Opium des Volkes"

Religion is opium of the people.

then SOMEONE, I think it was Lenin, said, religion is the opium for the people.

note the difference.

Anyway, Gott ist tot. (God is dead). Nietzsche, I believe.

Yes, I am pretty sure that it was Lenin who said that "religion is opium for the people". Maybe he just misinterpreted Marx a bit. :D

MARX DID, absolutely!
Plain true, isn't it? The only Marx idea I am to support... :)

"religion is the opium for the people"

that is really an empty saying because you could put any number of words in there and it would make sense. And being that Marx lived in Germany if I am not mistaken, that saying would kind of be outdated for his time period I would think.

"Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people."
- Karl Marx.

Is this making it any clearer. In response to Rhagnall , you can say the same about any qoute , that it is empty.Marx did live in Germany , and a few other places too , I don't see why that would make his comment anachronistic.

To the best of my knowledge Vladimir ILyich did not say this originally , unless he was paraphrasing Marx.
