Pre-History:

After World War One, Russia continued to experience turmoil up till 1936. Despite this, Veterans from World War I began work on a new military doctrine. Disgusted with the acrostics and horror of artillery, trench warfare, and tanks, they looked to something new to help make war effective, yet would not repeat the type of warfare from 1918.

If the eventuality of a second large scale war was to happen, it would be mobile, and the ever evolving inventions of the tank and air plane would cause these vehicals of war to become more abundant in war. Germany already was building a new army and was becoming increasingly belligerent with each passing day.

The doctrine research team wanted a new source of power, as effective as simple artillery to back up the Russia Army. They needed a weapon that could do the job of a plane, tank, and artillery. Since this war would be mobile they needed something that could move aswell. While maintaining the human wave doctrine, a Military project was developed Code named “Red Glare”.

"Red Glare" was a simple military project, more of a general research order. From its infancy Red Glare was devoted to research of all aspects of rocket technology and to establish how it could be used best to replace Artillery, Tanks, and Aircraft. As “Red Glare” progressed it found that ground forces, with enough research, could be supported by full rocket and mobile rocket brigades. In addition to comply with the order to avoid tanks, Red Glare developed a mobile task force based around a half-tank-half motorized infantry division: mechanized infantry.

Replacing propeller planes would require a lot more research into jet propulsion, so for the time being Red Glare suggested that air superiority be the fundamental responsibility of the Air Force. The biggest and most important discovery of the Red Glare “think tank” was the fact that rocket technology, once fully developed, could send ten times the payload of the strategic and tactical bombers from a relatively cheap missile.

“Red Glare” was just a think tank however, and it was not until 1936 that it’s research discoveries were put into a secret and pratical military doctrine to be known as the "Relentless Rocketry Doctrine".

It stated:

All divisions of the Soviet Army must be capable of using Rocket Technology Birgades.

All divisions of the Soviet Army must have a brigade of rocket artillery (SP or RART).

No Armored "Artillery" shall be used. No Tanks, No Artillery, No AT... Just Rockets.

The Army shall be used as the main spearhead for military victory, consisting of mobile forces and infantry operating under the "mass human wave" Land Doctrine to destroy and push back the enemy. Mechanized and Motorized Forces will combine to become the knuckles of the Soviet Iron fist. Infantry shall become the arm.

The Air force shall be used as a deterrent to enemy air activities and to protect ground and naval units. Primary bombardment responsiblities will be taken over by Rocket Technology, and the Air force will be very important in ensuring Air Domination.

The Navy Shall be used as a force to control sea lanes, directly or subversively, and to project power around the world. In addition The Navy will work with the Army to ensure Soviet Military power can be projected across oceans.

The Doctrine finally called for more research into the capabilities of faster, larger, and deadlier Rockets to be the focal point of Military research.

The idea was simple. Why fly a plane to drop bombs when you can launch a massive rocket at the enemy with similar results. Why use weapons of a war 20 years ago when the future was now!

The Doctrine was accepted by Russian High command on January 1, 1936.

The acceptance of the doctrine caused a lot of dissent, as the ideas seemed out of reach and unpractical at the time, but despite this fact, Russia will show the world what Rockets can do...

Stalin quoted on this day:
"The war of the future will be one of who has the biggest Rocket, and by Mother Russia we shall have the largest!"

Why else would you do a AAR based Solely around rocketry... for all the superb rocket vrs male-anotomy jokes that can go along with it! Please Share yours while I prepare the first couple updates!

Ka- BOOM!!!

Great idea for an AAR.

Communist Interventionism

The strategy for the first couple years will be one of industrial and technological progress, while moving the Soviet Union's foreign policy to that more of an interventionist. While policy was harder to change, taking years, arms could be given to friends of the Soviet Union, while also saving supplies for more and more production.

Once the inital 15% dissent was eliminated 10 series of rocket test facitilies were constructed in Moscow. The Industry was put to work creating more industry jobs in the center Motherland, east of Moscow. 18 new factories areas were created, each producing at least 3 series of factory complexes.

Basic 1936 technology was researched across the board.

Interventionism +1.

numerous 1918 divisions were disbanded and traded. Russian arms could be seen all across Europe and Asia. Poland, France, Communist China, Shanxi. Sometimes Stalin had to throw in some nice supplies to seal the deal. Communist China was at war with Nationalist China, and Russian weapons were now in the hands of our friends. We will continue to send military arms as long as they continue to fight for Stalinism in Asia.

The War begins here

June 1937. Modernization of the Soviet Union continues. In December of 36 the Soviet Union had 231/171 IC. By June of 37 that number had increased to 263/188. Three new Rocket Testing Facilities had be constructed in Moscow.

Research into the advanced technology of rocket Artillery was slow. Tech teams were still stuck on achieving improved Artillery, a perquisite to Rocket Technology.

Intelligence reports from the Soviet Union in mid 37' reported about 10 enemy spies (originally around 50) remained in the Soviet Union.

In late 36’ Spain had broken out into civil war, with the Soviet Union and Germany sending support to their relative sides (but France did not). Needless to say Republic Spain did not fare too well, delaying the Nationalist victory for 6 months thanks to winter, but no longer than that.

span_36_37.jpg

On June 10 1937 Hostilities broke out between Japan and China. Communist China was dragged into the conflict 10 days later, thus also eventually dragging her “secret supporter” The Soviet Union into the war (when the time was right). For Now Military supplies continued to flow into China, in the hopes to slow down Japanese aggression. Nearly 20 set of division size infantry arms and weapons had been sent to Communist China, C-China just now starting to distribute the weapons to its soldiers. Five to Ten sets of specialized Mountain infantry equipment was sent to Communist China to aid in their struggle against the Japanese. Also Mountain divisions were forbid under the Relentless Rocketry Doctrine of The Soviet Union, as they could not use Rocket Brigade Weaponry.

By July 14, 1937 Nationalist China was forced to Annex Shanxi. Despite the failure of Nationalists losing ground, Stalin was confident in Communist China’s ability to hold their home.

A Little history with your Vodka: MiG-3

Mikoyan-Gurevich Experimental Construction Bureau design team (Acronym for MiG) developed the MiG-3, as an improvement from the MiG-1. Below is a staple picture used in online history sites, right there in my production que in June of 1937.

mig-3.jpg

Mikoyan-Gurevich Experimental Construction Bureau design team (Acronym for MiG) developed the MiG-3, as an improvement from the MiG-1.

The MiG-3 excelled in speed above the staple German Fighter at the time the BF 109-F, and even could out maneuver the interceptor of the German’s, The Messerschmitt.

"In July and August 1941, during the first aerial combats over Kiev, elegant low-wing monoplanes with straight engines appeared next to the Rata. A few of them had been seen over Lemberg during the first few days, but this didn't cause much of a surprise because they were held to be our own."
"The reaction, of course, was devastating, but only because of poor intelligence work." [The German's knew very little of the Soviet Air Force, and When Monoplanes such as the MiG-3 were seen over the battle fields it caused confusion and panic, mostly due to German's far-below-par Intelligence on The Soviet Air Force.]

(http://www.chuckhawks.com/mig-3.htm)

From Wiki Pedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MiG-3:
General characteristics

* Crew: One
* Length: 8.25 m (27 ft 1 in)
* Wingspan: 10.20 m (33 ft 6 in)
* Height: 3.50 m (11 ft 6 in)
* Wing area: 17.44 m² (188 ft²)
* Airfoil: Clark YH
* Empty weight: 2,699 kg (5,965 lbs)
* Loaded weight: 3,355 kg (7,415 lbs)
* Powerplant: 1× Mikulin AM-35A liquid-cooled V-12, 993 kW (1,350 HP)

Performance

* Maximum speed: 640 KMH (397 MPH)
* Combat range: 820 km (510 miles)
* Service ceiling: 11,500 m (37,700 ft)
* Rate of climb: 14.7 m/s (2,890 ft/min)
* Wing loading: 192 kg/m² (39.4 lb/ft²)
* Power/mass: 0.30 kW/kg (0.18 hp/lb)

Armament

* 1x 12.7 mm UBS machine gun
* 2x 7.62 mm ShKAS machine guns.
o Weight of round 1.44 kg/s (3.17 lb/s). The UBS fired through the spinner hub at 1,050 rpm and used high explosive PETN ammunition. Some MiG-3's had 2 UBK guns under the wings, but this negatively affected flight performance.
* 2x 100 kg (220 lb) bombs, 2 spray containers for posions, gas or flamable liquids or 6x 82 mm RS-82 rockets

At this time I'd like everyone to note the sexyness of the MiG-3, especially due to the fact that it could carry RS-82 ROCKETS. More on the incredibly undeniable sexyness of the RS-82, and other Soviet Rocket Wepaons in the next edition of "A Little history with your Vodka"

Thanks for stopping by on this second Russia AAR!

Are you sure you didn't pass out while saying Relentless Rocket Rampage Rover Russia 5 times fast? If not, add a zero after the suggested "5 times" for each time you don't pass out, and repeat with the new number you created in front of you, untill you pass out or have a large migraine (a simple headache will not do). :D

Escalating Tensions of 1938

The past year for Russia had been... fruitfull. The world was going mad.

Germany Annexed Austria and Demanded all of the Czec's fortfied provinces. The Czec's are doomed.

With Facist Spain and Italy, A War was brewing between facism and Communism.

In response to German agression relations were improved with 3 baltic states, Romania, Turkey, and Bulgaria. The Soviet Union hopes to shift the policies of these nations in anticipation of war with Germany and whatever Axis memebers she brings to her cause.

Interventionism slider moved +1.

Our support for the Chinese in Operation Zet also moved our sliders +1 (can't remember if it was hawk or interventionism).

Blucher clashed with Japanese forces in the east, proving a minor Soviet Victory at the cost of his life.

Stalin, rank with paranioa, executed thousands of Russian officers in The Great Purge. Dissent rose to 10% and our rocket facitility lost it's gearing bonus :(. Russia had effectly cut off its own head.

After the Dissent from the great purge was eliminated, a new series of battle units were ordered. The Japanese were cutting through China very fast, and threatened to cut off Communist China from Nationalist China.

china_38.jpg

In Response to Japanese victories in China a new Sub fleet, a combined mix of Submarine III and Submarine IV were ordered. Their primary goal would be the desctruction of the Japanese convoys to Korea and China, But only after perhaps they took out Nationalist China. Below is a peak of the prodction scheme... a large series of factories and technology had increased production capbilities by nearly 70 IC.

rocket_subs.jpg

It would no doubt be a bloody battle in the sea's around Japan. The IJN had a mighty Navy with pleanty of ships and doctrines for ASW. In anticipation of this fact, Research into Naval Bombers was undertaken. Since Torpedo's resembled "Water Rocket's" Stalin approved the measure to ammend the Relentless Rocketry Doctrine to allow the Airforce to assist in Convoy hunting and to help defend our submarines against enemy Navy activities, untill a suitable Russian Navy could be created to establish a route to Japan.

In addition to Naval bomber research, The First step of Rocket research had been undertaken : The M-8 Rocket.

rocket_tech38.jpg

Also in anticpation of the upcomming war a superior advanced doctrine was researched allowing cheaper infantry and a new model HQ.

rocket_deepop.jpg

With a Battle Plan against the Japanese undergoing, Stalin turned his attention to the belligerient Germans.

A "Wall of Steel" (named after Stalin) was construction from southern Russia all the way to Leningrad. This wall was actually a trap for the Germans. Unlike the Magiot line, Russian planners had anticpated The German strategy for war: Blitzkreig. Why not allow the German's a large gaping hole to enter Russia, where our divsions could repeatedly attack from fortified positions cutting off any advancing German units and destroying them.

Supported by our superior MiG-3 Fighters at the tips of the lines in the South and North, the Air Force would ensure no enemy bombing or air force activity.

As a backup to our fighters being overrun, AA was constructed all around the Wall of Steel along with Radar enplacments to deter enemy bombing activities. Heavy AA would be built in the actuall fortified provinces, forcing bombers to go around the Wall of Steel where our fighters would know excatly where to intercept them.

Construction began in late 1938, planned competion somtime in 1941.

rocket_west_plan.jpg

4 Series of Garrision units were ordered to help man the fortifications while keeping supply consumtion low. Two Mig-3 (Fighter I) series were ordered.

Once Rocket Artillery was researched infantry 1939 would start being produced along with Motorized 41 (Mot II) now under development.

War was comming and The Soviet Union would be ready, with the longest torpedos, largest Rockets, and most advanced technology of the time.

Some Vodka with your M-8?

It was warm on this summer day in Moscow as nearly 50 high ranking officials of the Soviet Army sat and chatted in anticipation of the days events.

“Fire, Fire, Fire”, jolted a radio operator calmly into his receiver. This threw a silence over all the Officers now focused away from their chatter and all eyes to their right. Within 3 seconds of The Radio Operators call, small flashes of light in rapid succession sparkled into existence over the horizon. Quickly following them was a shrieking popping sound as the sparkles of light raced into the air followed by thick grey smoke.

Four M-8 Prototype Rocket Launchers had just fired their 24 Rocket Salvo in 10 seconds. At over two rockets per second and four Rocket Launchers, this was an awe inspiring sight of war. As the last of the Rockets flared into life from the horizon the smoking first set began to wane from their upward ascent now heading directly towards the Flagged bomb zone 250 meters in front of the crowd. As the First Rockets impacted the crowd was jolted by the surprising tremor and sound.

Stalin dropped his cigar. He began smiling with devious glee at what he saw. The Earth began to shake as the largest Artillery bombardment Stalin had ever seen rose from what seemed like under the ground, kicking dust and dirt into the air in a gigantic flash of fire and heat. Within 12 seconds 96 high explosive M-8 rockets had turned a 10 Acre area into an explosion of fire and earth. Each impact of HE rocket was like a firing a machine gun, except the recoil came three times faster. The impact from the explosions felt like a 400 pound Moscow massage therapist had just gone to work on Stalin’s face, back, and boots. He stood up. Fire continued to rage, now more like a giant forest fire, as one by one the crowd stood up and turned to Stalin with applause. “Victory will be ours” Stalin Thought. He lit a new cigar from his coat pocket. He said it out loud to everyone in particular: “Victory will be ours!!”. Cheers rose.

The M-8 Rocket Launcher is actually one of the first Types of Saturation Bombing Artillery used during WWII. It is the first in the long line of the famous “Katyusha” Rocket Launchers.

The main advantage of the Rocket Launcher in WWII to Artillery was the extreme and devastating potency of saturation bombing and the mounted Rocket Launcher’s ability to avoid Counter-Battery Fire.

While a Katyusha Multiple Rocket Launcher was less accurate than convention artillery and had a long reload time, it packed a quick and devastating punch. A battery of four BM-13 Launchers could launch an entire Salvo in 10 seconds that would saturate an area of 10 acres with 4.35 tons of High explosives. This weapon was of course feared by the Germans.

The actual M-8 came the airborne RS-82. Design work on RS-82 and RS-132 rockets began in the early 1930s, by a team led by Georgy Langemak,and including Vladimir Artemiev, Boris Petropavlovsky, Yuriy Pobedonostsev, and others. Recognize any of these names ;). The RS-82 was the smaller 3.5 inch wing mounted rocket. The MiG-3 fighter we developed earlier could hold 6 of these. The M-8 is the ground based version of the RS-82, with a much larger warhead (BOOM).

Is the giant hole there so they overextend and get surrounded by fortified units nearby?

sort of... It's called the Facist Pig Trap ment to destroy any units beyond the Wall of Steel by cutting them off from supply.
