Releasing Europa Universalis I as Freeware

So has Paradox every considered releasing Europa Universalis I as freeware? It has been out since 2000 and I imagine it does not bring in any considerable profit anymore. It wouldn't exactly bring in a whole new wave of fans but it would be cool for everyone who missed out on it to be able to just download it and see how Europa has changed over the years.

That is not something we are planning to do at the moment.

It's really cheap though. It's €2,95 at the moment at Gamersgate. It used to be a symbolic €1,- IIRC but still, with the purchase of any full price game you could just get EU1 with the bonus blue coins you receive.

It was not so much about the price, I have enough blue coins to get it for free if that were my intent. I just thought it would be a cool action overall, making older software titles freeware. Unlike many older games there is no worry that EU1 will disappear and die out like many classics do (they're out there somewhere on the net but difficult to find) I just find the idea as a whole appealing. Still just an idea

Actually i have to agree with the idea of giving away some very old games. EU1 would be a good idea or, even better, some very old titles like Airfix Dogfighter or Svea Rike that we cab bot even purchase...

I can't see any point in still selling EU1. EU2 I understand, but EU1 was just like EU2 but worse, as I know. Why would you buy EU1? For a really old PC? I wouldn't buy even EU2 cause there's For the Glory which is EU2 with patches as I understand.

Not that I'd download it if it was free.

To the original poster: Are you just talking about freeware so anybody can just have the game, or actually shareware so people could modify the game in-deep?

That would be up to Paradox to decide. I always just thought it was cool when companies would just throw older games out into the wild and let the community do what they want with them at that point. Heh and I believe im signed up for the newsletter, guess it cannot hurt to double check.

I just noticed that you can actually play EU1 for free on Gamersgate nowadays if you use one of your VOID slots for it. I've also seen HoI:2 in the list which is still an awesome game. Majesty, EU: Crown of the North, EU:Rome...

If you are on GG, EU1 is a VOID game that you can play for free (you are allowed one free game at a time from their list; I'm playing EU: CotN currently for inspiration modding CK2).
