It is driving me crazy. It seems that I lose reknown once every while, don't know the spread or the numbers, but it definetly decreases sometimes.

Which is not a big problem where it not for the fact it is annoying to gain reknown.

My party consists of 120 mercenary cavalery and 4 companions. Only in really large battles, like three or four lords combined against me do I get 9 or perhaps 10 reknown. Since I have four companions I get 4 reknown less automatically.

Which leaves 5 or 6 reknown at best. But the enemy only rarely comes with such big groups. So for the past 100 days I have tried my utmost to keep my reknown above a 1000, conquering half the map while doing so.

So what am I doing wrong? I'd like my reknown to get as high as possible as I am aiming for an army of 250 cavalery.

Are there tricks to get more reknown in battle or can I turn off the periodic reknown loss?

Thnx for your help/suggestions.

Renown decreases by 5% per month automatically. If you are married, your wife can be a fountain of renown. Hosting a feast gains renown plus increases your relationship with each lord who attends, providing you speak to him in the lord's hall while the feast is going on.
Asking your wife about ways to improve your standing in the realm often leads her to talk about a feud between two of your realm's lords. If you can get them to kiss and make up you gain 20 renown.
Rescuing a lord from prison gains renown.(plus honor).
Winning tournaments gains from16-20 renown.
Saving villages from bandits gains renown based on your troops versus the bandits.
Winning battles where you are substantially out numbered gains renown. This should not be too hard with 120 mercenary cavalry. This is not an exhaustive list. Many more ways exist, waiting to be discovered. Good luck.
Actually, 1000 renown is nothing to sneeze at.

hmm it really is that bad? 5% each month is quite a bit.

Anyway thnx for your advise.

So is there a way to stop the reknown loss? I don't mind fiddling with the code, just wondering if it is possible.

and on a sidenote; what is the strongest troop in the game? For a long time I thought it was mercenary cavalery since it was the best paid troop. But recently I discovered that swadian cavalery is actually 3 levels higher. (not sure if they are stronger, but hey that is why I am asking. :D)

Automatic loss in renown is a way to keep people busy.

Renown is not such a big deal as it can flow fast.

In the earlier stages of the game, I prefer not to go for renown purposedly. Usually you are involved in small skirmishes, bringing little renown.

I prefer to wait for stages when I am a vassal, especially when I am a marshall.

At this point, you can muster large battles like 1200 enemy factions against your 800/400 men. When a marshall, you command others lords'men giving you the option of tactics and the key to victory .

Much better to be involved in a large sequence of battles, most of them rewarding largely in renown than roaming the map seeking for meat.
One sequence can bring more than 100 renown points. Much better than running for battles worth three or four points.

On the offensive: Swadian knights are fairly unstoppable (Have not compared to Sarranids or mercenary though.

In a castle defense I heard a really convincing argument for Rhodok Sharpshooters (powerful ranged attack and a good melee when it comes down to it)

Thnx Yellow, that helps alot. :)

On the other subject; while I agree it is a way to keep you busy, I don't like it.

The game shouldn't try to keep me busy with such futile things. If I want to fight a large battle, I'll do it because I want to and not to keep my renown up.

Then again, I have been playing it so much lately I am beginning to see alot of things I don't like or I would have seen added.

This is not the thread for that, so if anyone known how I can turn the renown loss off, I would be grateful. Either cheats or fiddling with the code are fine by me.

Oh and on the subject of reknown; why is it that when the battle says it gives a certain amount of reknown, I always get 5 less?

Oh and on the subject of reknown; why is it that when the battle says it gives a certain amount of reknown, I always get 5 less?

I believe I overheard somebody say that you get 1 less reknown per battle per companion.... don't hog ALL the glory!

As far as modding the reknown loss, let me look at the files (I'm at work now) and get back to you. I'm a decent programmer, but with little modding experience, so if i can figure it out you should be able to implement it.

Alternatively, you could just not worry about it :p it's not an unreasonable "soft cap."
