Reino Unido de Portugal e Brasil

Welcome to this co-op AAR. Its the first one I start, and I hope it will turn well.

This is the country that shall be played by me & supported by all the forum members that joins as ministers, leaders or whatever. Set in an alternate reality, this Portugal is the only European colonial empire that successfully managed to keep its colonies. Federated into an United Kingdom, both Portugal and Brasil are ruled by a single king, represented in Brasil by a General-Governor (a bit on the model of the commonwhealt, but more centralized). They share common diplomacy, military and are bound by free trade acts.

Map of the Kingdom & its colonies:

portmapor2.png

The kingdom is ruled by the King, supported by a royal cabinet. There is no parliamentarism in the state. The members of the royal cabinet may be appointed or dismissed by a simple note of the king. The royal cabinet is a consultative organ however often the King let his ministers enjoy a relative freedom.

Manuel II, king of Portugal and Brasil by the grace of God

---

The current cabinet:

Head of Government: Manuel II (General_Grant)
Head of State: Royal Council (unrepresented)

Head of the Foreign Affairs: Arturo Costa de Guimaraes (Masked Pickle)
Description: decides diplomatical moves of the country. May use of any diplomatical moves available but joining an alliance or declaring war need an official royal approbation.

Head of Industry & Armament: José Nunes (Hannibal Barca2)
Description: decides of how the industry of the country is used. Allocates ICs according to the various needs of the army, or any construction trough the country.

Chief of the Staff: D. Bruno Leal de Olivença (Bruno Leal)
Description: plan the genral strategy of the military campains. Coordinate the land, air and naval forces.

Chief of the Army: José Gonçalves da Silveira (Reno Vercetti)
Description: decides wich land military unit should be build & researched, and where the existing land military units should be placed.

Chief of the Air Force: Fernando Felipe (Tommy4ever)
Description: decides wich air military unit should be build & researched, and where the existing air unit should be located.

Chief of the Navy: Rodrigo Vinícius de MacHenry (Demoking)
Description: decides wich type of ship should be build & researched, and where the existing fleets should be located.

General-Governor of Brazil: Ariadna de Braganza (Viden)
Description: not represented in-game, still important for roleplay. Have the right to oppose to any decisions regarding Brazil made by members of the cabinet, like opposing the deployment or the removal of military units from its territory within the limits of the reason (should not oppose decisions by pure obstructionism).

---
Altrough I'm not willing to make this a completly roleplay AAR, I'd appreciate a bit of it. When applying for a place in the royal cabinet, choose something that sounds reasonable for a minister in 1936 Portugal. Choose an appropriate name, and optionally write a small background (no more than a few lines) and suggest a minister picture (or the default one shall be used).

But please, no monsters, aliens, manga chicks, or any stupid stuff like that. I'd like this to be fun, but stay within the limit of the plausible (I'm not asking to pick up a person that really existed, just to create a realistic one).

You can also apply to be a leader or a tech team however I'd prefer to give priority to the ministers first.

Since this is an almost absolute monarchy there is no parliament and thus no parties. So no, you can't be the leader of a communist faction or whatever.

Informations shall be delivered in due time when you will apply for a place in the cabinet (for exemple I'll make a brief presentation of Portugal's diplomatic situation when a minister will be chosen).

Reports about the situation shall be made every 3 months in peace time and monthly in war time. I'd like it that if you join, you really participate. If not your place shall be simply grated to another person.

The AAR will start in around half a week, at most. I'll be gone for the week-end so don't expect answers immediatly.

---

I hope this can be fun. If you have any suggestion, I'll be open to them. :)

Signed and Sealed,
Manuel II,
king of Portugal and Brasil

José Gonçalves da Silveira

Born in Torres Vedras (a city about 50 km north of Lisbon) in 1886 in a small landlord's family. After graduated from a military school in 1905, he joined the Portuguese Army as a Captain. During the Great War, his talent on military command made him a relatively famous commander, and he became a general shortly after the end of the war. His experience during the war helped the reform of the army, and his idea on Elastic Defense Doctrine gained appreciation from Manuel II, the King of Portugal. As a result, he was appointed as the Chief of the Army in 1933.
He is one of the Generals of the Royal Portuguese Army with talents (Skill : 4, Max Skill : 9) and is famous for his skills of Offensive Doctrine and Defensive Doctrine.

Just a small note as a brazilian that I am
Should read "Costa de Gui..." not "da", or even remove the "de" and "da" completely if you prefer so

José Nunes, minister of armament

Born into a poor family in march 1909 in the suburbs Lisboa, Nunes have had an eventful life. His father died during the bloody mess of the great war. His mother remarried with a rich noble whom she met while her husband fought for our fatherland at the front. At the age of 23 Nunes finished his education at Royal Manuel's University, being proclaimed the best student in economy. His stepfather's connection's quickly let him rise in the ranks, which combined with his natural intelligence promoted him to one of Portugal's leading economists. In november 1935 was he appointed by Manuel II to take care of the kingdom's finances.

Ariadna de Braganza, Minister of Security

margarethoi2vs3.jpg

Born in Lisboa in a cloudy day of November, 1912 in a minor brach of the royal house, she was a rebel. Faced against the traditional education gived to the women, she fought in order to gain autonomy and selfdetermination to choose her own way of life, and she succeeded. Because that, she studied Political Sciences and Psichology at the Royal Manuel's University (At the same time) earning the nickname of "Female Freud" because her talent in psichoanalysis and her thesis about the "Psichology of the masses".

But the old traditions still exist, and Ariadna, a beatiful 23 years old single woman of the nobility related to the royal house, attracts the interest of dozens of suitors, moreover after her election by King Manuel II as Minister of Security.

Note: She is Paternal Autocrat/Fascist.

(If Minister of Security isn't available, put she has Governor of Brazil).

Fernando Felipe

(just use default photo for me)

When Fernando was 27 he was amongst the first to join the Portuguese ariforce when it was founded in 1912. His father's position as the owner of one of the few factories in Portugal able to produce aircraft of any sort convinced Portuguese commanders to make give him high rank in the Serviço Aeronáutico Militar. During WWI he was given command of the Portuguese aviation squadron in Mozambique ehich fought against the Germans in Tanzania. After distigiushing himself for his great abilities he rose in rank and by the end of the war the French had invited him to command a small squadrin of their own air force (featuring Portuguese pilots) on the Western Front. When the air force became a full arm of service in 1924 King Manuel II personally chose him to become the Cheif of te Air Force as he had gained the favour of the King for his excellent service during WWI. As the airforce seems ready to expand Fernando is eager to see the construction of new Tactical and Naval bomber squadrons in order to devestate potential enemy forces.

D. Bruno Leal de Olivença

presid24.jpg

D. Bruno is the "de jure" Marquis of Olivença, although only in name because those lands were abducted by the spanish 100 years ago on the War of the Oranges, and thus the title is merely formal.
D. Bruno was born in 1903, in the border lands of Elvas, the greatest stronghold between Lisbon and Spain, in the middle of an old aristocratic and proeminent family.
Although a noble, he was educated by the highest standards of military discipline, mostly by influence of his now deceased father, who was a veteran general from WW1, mortally wounded in the infamous Battle of La Lys.
Since his childhood he developed a cunning personality which took him to the highest ranks of the Exército Português, becoming Commander-in-chief of the 1º Regimento de Infantaria, the most prestigious batallion in the whole army, responsible for the land defense of the mainland.
His ancestors past, allowed as well for him to grow a great hate for the germans and spanish, which some rumours say he will take the oportunity of his army position to make his personal vendetta. It could be only rumours though...

P.S.: Sorry, but I dont know how to minimize the picture, and sorry as well for my bad english. :eek:o

Rodrigo Vinícius de MacHenry
A fifth generation Scot immigrant, Rodrigo was born in 1897 in Oporto. Always bright and inquisitve, he was a shoe in for acceptance to Oxford. The Great War, however, interevend and young Rodrigo was drafted in 1916 at the age of 19. He was sent of to France were he aquited himself well, eventually becoming an officer. He ended the war as a Lt. Colonel and was also enobled for his service with the addition of "de" before his last name. After the war he finally went to Oxford were he graduated cum lauds with a Masters in Military History and Political Science and a bachelors degree in Literature. He rose quickly in politics and was appointed Chief of the Navy in 1934. Many in the Naval establishment at first highly opposed this appointment on the grounds that he had no practical experience with naval affairs. After only one year, however, he managed to silence most of his critiques with his new and vibrant plan to revitilize the navy, pressing for a doctirne of Power Projection.

note: For a picture, just choose one that comes with the game, preferably in civilan clothing. Also, so you know, I'm sort of aiming for a Portugese version of Winston Churchill.

To the minister of foreign affairs Arturo Costa de Guimaraes,

Dear sir,

With the ministry of foreign affairs in your hands you must be aware of some facts regarding the foreign policies of the state.

As a participant of the Entente in the Great War we still enjoy good relations with the old members of this alliance. Portugal is alway strong of its excellent relationships with the United Kingdom and all of the British Empire. We have good relationships with the Kingdom of Italy and most of Latin America overall; however our relations with the Argentine Republic are very poor, mostly because of the ever lasting issue of the ownership of the territory of Cisplatina.

Germany is begining to open itself to trade relations, interested by the resources of Brazil and seeking new markets for their industrial products.

Our relations with the USSR have reached a drastic point, there is no Portuguese embassy in Moscow nor any Soviet embassy in Lisbon, as our administration never recognised their criminal 'state'. The shamefull murder of the Russian Imperial family shall not be forgotten as long as a similar threat is over our country.

The Soviets also support communist and anarchist groups right next door, in Spain. 'Unfriendly' is an emphemism to describe the attitude of the illegal republican government of Spain. The unstability within their own borders and the fact that we still protect good part of the old Royal family in exile continue to poison links between the two countries.

Further diplomatic innitiative will be leaved to your discretion; forward wich country we should focus our diplomatic efforts, or againt wich nation we should try to use of our influence to bring them to accept our requests.

Portugal is not considerated as a 'Great Power' on the continent, but our colonial empire gives us prestige, and a great advantage in both economical resources and manpower. This must be used at our advantage, whatever this may mean to you. I don't have the time to think about all the details; this is why I have ministers.

Best of Luck,

Your King

To the chief of the army José Gonçalves da Silveira

Dear sir,

Together with this letter are included the entire order of battle of the land units of the country.

Most of our military supplies are the same that were used during the Great War, and it will be up to you to decide if we should priorize the construction of new units or try to upgrade our troops first.

In order to coordinate the industrial capacity of the country you should ask to the ministry of Armament and Industry to allocate fundings to your department- I'll leave you find an agreement with the minister of Industry and the departments of Air force and of the Navy.

Best of Luck,

Your King
