So with everyone either uninstalling until 1.6 or "actually playing the game now", here's my take:
Coalitions should be regional entities responding to regional threats. There should be regions similar to colonial regions in which threat is accrued and coalitions form. This will prevent some of the ridiculous coalitions the game is putting up, while still providing a way to block expansion. When conquering a province the player (or AI) should accrue full AE in the relevant coalition region, about 40-60% in the bordering regions, and 10-20% in the ones bordering those.
This way landgrabs will at first only piss of the people around you (or of the region), if you continue to attack that region AE will add up in the bordering regions and members there will start to join the coalition. In my opinion this would provide a much smoother progression towards World War X.
