Haha. I'm thinking that this is something a council should not allow to happen unless they really hated your dad. It seems obvious that these two positions are incompatible.

I had an interesting scenario occur in my game. My ruler had a few sons, and his heir also had a son. Soon after, my son had a medical condition that caused him to be a eunuch, which prevented succession and caused the baby grandson to become the heir. Then the ruler very suddenly died of poor health!

So here's what happened as far as I could tell. My designated regent was replaced very soon with my uncle who is also my heir! Then my mother stepped in as regent, and then the uncle again, and there was this back and forth battle going on as to who would be regent. My council was all friendly with me and my spymaster caught my uncle plotting my demise, all I could do was ask him to end the plot, which I didn't do right away because I wanted to imprison him when my mom was regent again.

However, when my mom became regent again I could not imprison this uncle because the council would not approve! Apparently discovering a plot from your regent doesn't give you a cause for imprisonment, so even when they aren't your regent anymore, you have to imprison them 'unjustly' which the council will not approve.

So this was a rather silly situation that shouldn't really happen. Still, is there anything I can do when under a regency to influence this regency battle? What's going on with the flipping of regents?

It seems obvious that these two positions are incompatible.

Why? There were a lot of cases in history when an adult heir son stepped up as a regent for his old incapable father. Ability to hold both position at once makes perfect sense. In your case it also makes sense - the main branch of your dynasty is endangered, and your uncle's cadet branch is going to take over in case of your demise.

Apparently discovering a plot from your regent doesn't give you a cause for imprisonment

I believe it does, there may be other reasons to vote against imprisonment of your uncle. Check out the reasoning of every council member - when you click on Imprison button, open a small voting window with a round button near the confirmation button. There you can hover over each councillor and check out what's wrong.

Interestingly, this happened in history at least once (probably several times, but I only known of this one).

Meet Edward the Fifth a boy king whose uncle was in line for the crown just behind him. And whose uncle was regent. He lasted about as long as you'd expect.

You are lucky, you had a mother looking out for you. It does seem odd to me that your council won't let you imprison your uncle when he's plotting regicide. Does your council hate you that bad?

Edit: Two strong theories on why your council won't imprison your uncle.

Possibility one: Your uncle is on the council. Usually your regent (unless designated) is a council member or your wife or mother, so I'm guessing your uncle is on the council. Councilors hate imprisoning other councilors unless they are rivals. Solution: kick him off the council while he isn't your regent, then throw him in jail.

Possibility two: Council stances. Glory Hound councilors don't like imprisoning your dynasty members, Malcontents just like to tell you 'no'. Solution: Get favors on your council, or get a more pliable council. Council votes explained

Actually, this uncle was not on the council at all. He was unlanded also, which puts him in my court I guess. He did have a high intrigue skill, but less than my mother and a lot less than my spymaster. The council was all of men who were elevated to rulership by my father, and they loved me as a result. My spymaster had a +100 opinion rating as an example.

I probably should have landed him in hindsight, then he would have to leave court.

In the end, he murdered the boy king, became king himself and then died of cancer within a year! So now I am playing his infant son. It's a rather different game now, because this boys father was not well liked. My vassals are getting ready to undo absolute hereditary rule.

EDIT: Also, you can't do any exchanging of favors etc. for council votes during a regency, so if the council doesn't like something you can't do it no matter what.

I get this scenario happened in history, but in those cases the legitimate heir had absolutely no protectors. I should have had the entire council on my side keeping my mother as regent.

I never got the 'righteous imprisonment' event when the plot was discovered. When my regent changed, it did not appear at that time either. The only imprisonment option was the 'unjust' variety, which you can't do during a regency.

Strange. I am pretty sure I bought some favors from council members during some of my games when playing as a minor which enabled me to imprison some characters plotting to kill me. Also, why didn't you go into hiding till you came off age?

I never got the 'righteous imprisonment' event when the plot was discovered.

I don't know what to say, that shouldn't happen. Every time I discover someone plotting against me, I always get "nobody would object since that person acted dishonorably". Perhaps, you could share a save file if it still exists? You may have stumbled upon a bug, after all.
