So, to be blunt, has anything been made of this region yet, or at least any hints? With the issue of PTI still somewhat up in the air, could we have a map that doesn't horribly disfigure the continent? So far Vicky was the only game that managed to make it look good enough to rule.

australia? all they do in this timeframe is be a convict colony. they don't matter. :D

Sad but true (assuming we ignore non-european inhabitants...)

In fact, if things proceed historically, Australia will be colonised for all of 1 year before the game ends :)

Still it would be nice if there were a bunch of coastal provinces all around and islands in the Pacific, it would give you something to explore if playing an Asian power and expand to America from the East. This is alt history after all.

Have you tried out the Watk3-map? You can play it with EU II and it´s really awesome in these regards. You have a lot of islands in the Pacific and Australia is far better modelled i.e. in detail.
:)

China?

China could of (some say did) establish trading posts in Australia. In fact I think it should have LESS provinces, I would prefer an balkan or spanish province to a 500 miles of useless sand or jungle. However the thought of colanization should be raised... who knows? What if magellian or some French/Spanish/portugese sailor found newzealand?, it would be like the philopines or a mass genocide like cuba/haiti. The position would be quite stratigical, a good solid base in the pacific. (actually i've seen a french newzealand in my game =)).
Been a loose crusader kings player I would've liked if the powers could, while having national stratergies have a sort of randomization and luck in finding their powers... columbus's voyage could have easily failed, the portugese could have abandoned their adventurizm and economic decline of europe would have continued... although I like to see a big green Brazil and not a mixture of venician/dutch/English colonies, I think taking austrias blobatization AI would fit well :D

When you make statements like these (there's nothing wrong with them, obviously...), please remember that P'dox should always (and hitherto have always) think of what modders can do - and more importantly, will want to do - with the map and scenarios, etc.

I'd rather have more provinces than less. I can't see it being a bad thing :)

Abel Tasman (a Dutchman) discovered New Zealand in the 17th century. Nothing was done with the island untill the 19th century. There just was nothing interesting there, nothing to trade. The same is true for Australie which was known IIRC from the 16th century onwards by the Portugese.
If you wanted to settle somewhere it was much easier to go to the americas instead of traveling halfway around the globe.

It was originaly named Staten Landt :p
(Tasmania was van Diemensland, van Diemen was the VOC's governor general at the time.)

It was changed by later cartographers after it was more fully discovered. I have no idea why. Perhaps the cartographer was from Zeeland. Tasman certainly was not in any case, he was from Groningen.
