Refresh my memory re: patches + pics?

I'm re-installing HOI + 1.06 + 1.06b.

However, I noticed in the readme file of 1.06 that one should also install the 0411 leader pics file. I was going to do this, however I noticed that there are a few event files in one of the zipfile's folders (including one having to do with the Spanish civil war, as a matter of fact). Should I still unzip it to install all the leader pics?

What strikes me as funny is that the original 1.06 update file is pretty large; I find it hard to believe that it doesn't already include all the needed leader pics.

Anyone have any tried and true information on whether or not to install the whole pic pack (or if it's even necessary)?

That Picture Pack is obsolete. As you observed it contains files other than pictures. These should not be installed onto 1.06, especially if you will be playing multiplayer. I don't know why Vulture doesn't rebuild the Picture Pack so that it just contains pictures. I think he's attached to some of the other stuff but those extras make it a mod, not an official patch add-on.

I think that the old picture pack included a lot leader pictures which were then transfered into the ?1.04? patch. Since it was really big patch 1.05 did not include the whole picture pack + the remaining pictures were transfered to the picture pack.. the november one is the latest.

We actually play in all out mp games with the picture pack as there are errors in some of the 1.06 gifs of units...

So, in essence, there's no consensus on what to do with the pic pack. I'm wondering why the old 1.06 readme says that we should download the pic pack and install it.

Or should we just unzip the leader pics (without any other additional files) into the appropriate folder?

Well the consensus (with most people I play) is that we should install the picture pack (the whole of it) on top of 1.06. How it works with 1.06b - I dont know yet. Maybe Max will come along and enlighten us.

The main problem with the pic pack and events is that it overwrites some Spanish Civil War events and causes problems there

I think it's explained pretty clearly in Vulture's post in the 1.06 download sticky thread. All leaders and ministers from the latest (Nov 11) pic pack are included in 1.06 but many pictures are not. If you want the pictures then download the pic pack and extract only the pictures, not the whole file because it also contains event files that you don't want. 1.06b doesn't change any of this since it has no leader or minister files or pictures.

In the HoI directory. CORE 0.8+ already includes all the pictures.

Latest Simmary of Picture Packs

From various posts in this thread and the FAQ from Core 0.91, is this correct?

1.06 needed the picture pack less events since Johan had download size in mind.

1.06c does NOT require the piture pack.

Core has the pictures included as well using "the November Picture Pack has been superceded by unspecified later patches,

1.06c does not have the extra pictures. You still need either the pictures (only) from the picture pack or from C.O.R.E. (which includes all the pictures from the picture pack). Note this is only if you WANT the pictures; they aren't really required to run the game correctly. Some people even remove some pictures because it improves performance. You should also get the fixpack from my sig; even if you run CORE the fixpack has some fixes for leader and minister files that CORE doesn't fix. You may also want Robert Koop's fix for the modifiers bug; see my post in the Fix it Yourself thread here.
