A very simple suggestion - have the AI evaluate whether it should join a coalition immediately when a truce ends. Of course players can still keep different nations on different truce timers and use other tactics to prevent coalitions from forming, but it eliminates the unrealistic strategy of keeping nations out of existing coalitions by instantly declaring war when a truce ends.
I think the arguments for and against this idea are the same - it makes the game harder by causing coalitions to work closer to the way they really should work. This sounds good, but maybe having the AI be a bit more effective at stopping the player's expansion will backfire and make the game less fun. What do you think?
