Splendid work! (both the AAR and the miniatures) But where is the miniature of Comrade Stalin!?
I'm eagerly waiting for the next episode in the saga of the glorious red fleet in its quest to free the world of capitalist oppression!
Also, you could award the ship with the highest number of kills (the sovetskiy soyuz ?) the honorary naval guards flag that upon sight would strike terror in the hearts of the enemies of the Revolution!

Standing on the bridge of the Sovietsky Soyuz, Admiral and Commissar Kuznetsov couldn't help but wonder what was on the mind of the enemy.

Only one week ago, Germany had completed it's 3rd year of War, and the results could hardly be more devastating. Hitler's Navy was almost non-existent, thanks to the Red Fleet, his armies were colapsing on every front, even his once-renowed airforce was afraid to operate.

Kuznetsov was proud that his Navy was an important part of it, even now that the Kriegsmarine didn't dare leave port.

Just in the last month, the Black Sea Fleet helped break into Bulgarian controled territory...

...and the Naval Infantry again proved it's worth as an elite force in Cracow.

Back in Leningrad spirits were high as well. That reflected in productivity and busy minds. By the end of August new proposals on better Carriers were presented, considerably improving range, number of aircraft on board and defence capacities.

The Commissar was growing more and more convienced of the carrier's usefulness as support vessels, especially for recon tasks. The Americans were using them as offensive weapons, but apart from a lucky attack on Bismarck, this remained an unproved strategy. The Sovietsky Soyuz class, by contrast, was the most successful of the War.

Keen on not losing the edge on a new technology, but mindful that support was the only tested and proven use by the Red Fleet, the Commissar ordered even better models to be developed.

And he was still here, where he had been the whole month - off the Northwestern German coast, blockading Wilhelmshafen.

But today was different. Because today he finally recieved the report he'd been waiting for. The Marines took the harbour! They didn't capture any operational ships, but forced the Kriegsmarine out. And now he was waiting for it.

The wait was shorter than he'd expected.

Under Großadmiral Erich Raeder himself, the last German battleship didn't even try to go unoticed, knowing Kuznetsov had every avaliable recon plane in the air. Instead, he used the dozens upon dozens of stranded submarines to create a war with which to keep the Soviets away long enough for him to escape to the west.

It wasn't a bad idea, and the Soviet Admiral had to recognize to himself, he probably wouldn't have come up with something as good if it was him in this situation.

Then again, he wasn't in Raeder's situation. His Navy was larger, stronger, and in better shape. He didn't need any cunning tricks, he just needed to order an attack. And so he did.

The destroyers destroyed and scared many a submarine, and what they couldn't force down or to the side, they were ordered to ram. Same went for the larger ships.

Soon it was obvious the demoralized German crews had no wish to die for pointless last stands, and the capital ships of the Red Fleet quickly caught up with the damaged Friedrich Der Große.

The outcome of a concentrated barrage by no less than 5 battleships was what the Admiral expected.

Admiral Kuznetsov finally could feel free to bask in Glory! The USSR had nothing more to fear from the seas, as the Kriegsmarine was no more!

Already a shadow of it's former self before, it was now rendered non-existent on the surface, and terrified to operate it's U-boat fleet.

...or almost so.

A mere 9 hours after the Friedrich Der Große slipped under the waves, the last Romanian submarine, the Delfinul, now under German command, was spotted heading for the Straight, possible to attempt to pass.

Free from his shore support duties by the taking of Varna, and feeling this symbol of fascist stubbornness should be erased once and for all, Admiral Golovko ordered an all out attack on this old submarine.

Considering his aircraft suited for the job, the captain of the Minsk proceeded to orient his carrier into a position from which he could launch his small detachment of bombers.

Considering his cannons suited for the job, the Admiral ordered the battleships to open free fire on the submarine's direction.

4 hours later, with all survivors rescued, Admiral Golovko set sail to Sevastopol, as ordered, feeling his chances for career progression had been cut somewhat short...

A Demotion is probably his due, but probably the best thing to do is remove him from his command and send him on a retirement somewhere out of the ways. Or maybe a humiliating job like commander of some small rarely used port up near the pole. Although Stalin will probably have him executed, which is fine by me.:D

On a better note, Kuznetsov should be commended for eliminating this last Fascist German Battleship. AFAIK now only Italy has battleships.

A great update though.

Nooooo poor Minsk!

Sunk by the wiles of an ancient submarine (and some overzealous gunnery)!

Palmyrene - Pertinent question... a bit too pertinent... are you an "allied" spy by any chance? :p
Current policy regarding the Med is, essencialy, that there is no policy regarding the med. We're bound to the Black Sea by Treaty, and breaking it or Turkey's neutrality would only lead to problems with the British. What's more, as long as the RN and RM are figthing eachother, they're not a threat to us.

TombolaG - Many thanks comrade! That would go directly to my sign if I had the space. :eek:o

Syber - Comrade Stalin is obviusly too Great to be made into a miniature :D I like the honorary flag idea. We'll see if anyone deserves it by the end of the War.

General_Hoth, Amallric and RGB - Tell me about it. :( Right after that other battle, too... At least there are new models being developed.

Maj. von Mauser - I think Germany still has an old BC hiding somewhere, but it's just a floating fixed platform by now, considering the complete lack of escorts and how hopelessly outdated it is.
The Italians keep on free from British incursions, proving their BBs are still doing well. I'll post some more info on that later.

maybe admiral golovko could command a navy squadron in the gulf of ob (which i just found)? he probably couldn't do too much damage there, though that last bit goes to show you never can tell.

still loving the aar, and well done on defeating the kriegsmarine surface fleet.

Nice job on the Friedrich der Grosse. How good is your surface fleet when facing subs? Any problems for your battleships, or do you have enough screens?

Shame, shame, shame about the Minsk. And it looks like Golovko didn't even succeed in sinking the submarine... If I were Golovko, I would strongly consider stealing a lifeboat (or even only a life vest) and jumping ship. It can't be more than a few hundred miles to neutral Turkey, after all, so his odds of swimming there have to be better than the ones for facing an irate Stalin...

I take it from your narrative that friendly fire sunk the carrier, rather than that Romanian rustbucket?

I hope the Schleswig-Holstein is still afloat, that is my favourite Ship.:D

Italy usually tends to go the "Fleet in Being" way, so you'll probably have to force those ships out of port someday.

I'm shure the Romanians aboard their Submarines are quite proud of themselves. IRL Romania had some success with their subs in the Black Sea.

BritishImperial - problem is, as you can see by the image, he's not a bad Admiral, and the Fleet ain't swiming in great Admirals... :eek:o

Mico94 - We'll have to wait for an official investigation, but I think he didn't mistake the submarine for the carrier, instead he simply failed to coordinate a proper attack.

Stuyvesant - The surface fleet is terrible against submarines, because of the game mechanics. You see, when faced with a sub, the game will engage at long range (BB range), but BBs can't hurt subs much. Meanwhile, the DDs are too far way to hurt the subs. On the other hand, the sub is out of range too.

And the Minsk did get sunk by the Sovietskaya Ukraina. All it took was 2h of battle for it. SHBB's are deadly in Friendly fire.

Maj. von Mauser - I think that rust-bucket is still "afloat" in France somewhere, yeah. Hiding from the Red Fleet, Royal Navy and Marine Nationale no doubt :p

Maybe you can find a way to demote him some how, by editing the files or something. Still negligence to the point of sinking your own Escort Carrier is a pretty big crime, and Im shure you could find some admiral who would be itching to take his place. A Skill 2 Superior Taction is just as good as a Skill 3 Spotter. I can't quite remember what the combat bonus for Superior Tactician is (10?) but I think Golovko's combat bonus would be 15, where a Skill 2 ST would have a bonus of 20, due to the trait.

This is really quite a great AAR! I read through it and I really enjoyed it. Love the idea of making the USSR a naval powerhouse. Everything was so well written and communicated to the readers so well. Fantastic AAR and I can't wait to see the USSR take on the allied navies!
