All the ideas sound good, especially increasing lifespan while decreasing fertility.

Defines.lua makes it possible to change when people die, however I'm unsure what numbers could be used to make most people live to 110.
All the ideas sound good, especially increasing lifespan while decreasing fertility.
Defines.lua should hit the spot. While I was there, I also adjusted the ages for people to change portraits. Child is 18 (Could be changed), Young adult ends at 40, middle age ends at 70, and then old people portraits for the rest.
I like all of these. The UN should also be able to repeal policies as well.
Perhaps a prestige hit could go along with repeals.

Showerthoughts
  • Every two years or so, dust storms could come through and wreck havoc on solar power farms and food production, leading to massive province reductions in supply limits and taxes
  • Radiation is going to be a big deal, so most people will have to be underground which could lead to them being much more prone to diseases due to such close quarters. To avoid this, the rich can afford to build compounds and such on the surface which have heavy plating to ward off the radiation
  • Cannibals could be a fun group to include in the Red Plains
  • The UN can have a set of decisions to show polices they want to enact
  • The Olympians have established a monarchy, and are a generally Italian-Greek-Turkish melting pot. Their religion draws heavily from both Hellenic and Islamic theology, where they believe each King is a sort of Prophet. They say that monarchs are representatives of the multiple Gods forged together as one, and can set major theological decisions
  • People should probably live longer, atleast to ~110 on average. This could be made fun if we reduced fertility and made more character flavor decisions, events, and traits.
  • I defintley want to see if CotC's homosexual marriage system could be implemented, as it would help reduce childbirths overall in the game and compensate for longer life spans
  • There could be a small amount of colonists from an old Lunar colony, possibly with unique cultures]
  • Lifestyles need a minor overhaul; Perhaps diplomacy is Negotiation/Debating and Charisma (Replacement for seduction). Martial is Strategy and Brawling. Stewardship is Economics and Ruling (Pretty much same as vanilla). Intrigue is Networking (Working with criminal underworld) and Subterfuge (more personal). Learning is Philosophy and Historical Studies.
Few thoughts.
How useful are solar farms on Mars? I was under the impression that such tech would be useless.
The idea that the multiple gods need to forged into one is not necessary as most ancient peoples, tended to have a single patron God, and later philosophers would begin to develop a kind of crude monism/monotheism (see the demiurge or the divine mind). They also had a habitat of combining gods (i.e. Ammon-Re-Ptah, Serapis)
As for the habitation, are they living underground in caves, in Sod dwellings, or something like the houses of Tatooine.
Would people live longer once access to modern medical technology is severed?
Are cannibals their own group, like an kingdom or duchy with its own religion, or is the act of cannibalism just a decision specific to a culture like castration.

Why would solar farms be obsolete on Mars? I was under the impression that a lesser atmosphere would lend itself to them. The Olympian thing was kinda just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks, and now that I think about it their religion shouldn't be so outlandish. Maybe it would be interesting to make them an offshoot of Islam and Orthodox, with a dash of Hellenic flavor. The habitations I planned was more like a vast system of tunnels with filtration systems to bring in new air. Still subject to change though. I'm trying to get the mod atleast running so I can visualize the world and fill out all these ideas more. The health thing could be fixed by some kind of event which every twenty years, assigns a health buff. It starts off by giving maybe +5 or something, and then decreases each twenty to show how they're running out of medicine. The base health should be increased, however, because while people won't have medicine they'll still have more knowledge than the average Karling back in 867. The idea of restricting cannibalism to a culture is very interesting, and I think it could be included like you mentioned as a targeted decision towards prisoners.

As on to terraforming Mars, I will point out there will be some issues.

Calcium Perchorlate is pretty much everywhere on Mars. This is a issue for colonization in general, because it's toxic to nearly every living thing on Earth. Oh, and it's where you can find all of the liquid water on mars right now.

So farming is going to need a way to neutralize a omni-present toxin to be soil-based.

Not just farming, building too. It could explode quite easily.
But, hey, I don't think Red Kings is going to need to be hyper-realistic. I think a handwave could easily be thought of.

I should have specified. I thought electricity in general was gone making solar panels useless.
So do most people live in subterranean urban areas, because I would think that the events on Mars would warrant many people to take up subsistence farming? Also, the Hellenistic faith isn't the same as the Martian religion, right?

Sorry for being away for so long, I've been putting the finishing touches on a side project this past week. About the thread theology and historical studies, that could defintley fit. Thank you housemartell! IamOzymandis, solar panels are really only in the major and capitol cities. They will be represented by province modifiers. And the Olympian (Hellenistic) faith is entirely separate from the other Martian Religions, though it shares a group.

Imperator Julius Carling, self proclaimed Lord of Olympus Mons, was born on ESD (Earth Standard Date) 25-12-2587 to Regional Director Maria Carling and her spouse Josiah Carling. Julius' early childhood was one of leisure and grandeur, having been raised in a privileged household. On his fourteenth birthday, as per Olympian tradition, Julius was stripped of his clothes and hair before being sent to climb Olympus Mons with nothing but a blanket and one bottle of water. During the time he was away Maria held a great council meeting to determine their position on rising tensions in the East, where the small kingdom of Diatera had just faced a brutal revolution. At this meeting, one of the realms most powerful officials, Anna Metaxas, staged a coup of her own and executed Maria and Josiah.

At the first resting point on Olympus Mons, Julius had just arrived. Though sources are limited as to what happened here the widely accepted version is that a loyal fellow pilgrim awoke Julius in the night and they escaped from Anna's rebels with fresh equipment. Through what is claimed to be divine Intervention, they nearly reached the final station before running dangerously low on oxygen. This fellow pilgrim told Julius to go on without him. A hesitant Julius was finally persuaded, and he reached the last station alone. When Anna's men finally got there he stepped out the doorway and proclaimed, 'Who are you men to abandon your loyalty so quickly? Metaxas committed one of the worst crimes possible, to take another's life. Do you wish to follow in her footsteps?' The soldiers were unpersuaded and shot him.

They carried Julius' body down the mountain and presented it to Anna. As she observed it, Julius awoke and viciously attacked her and her compatriots. In a flurry of madness, the only life left in the room was his own. The guards who came in saw the carnage and decided to side with the young man, and they escorted him to the throne room. Julius sat there for a whole week without food or drink, still covered in the traitors' blood, as he passed judgement on those who had wronged him.

just took a look at this thread for the first time. minus the calcium perchorlate problem; which i supposed could be written off because of genetic modifications causing chemical immunity; this looks pretty awesome and feasible.

and Julius Carling? love the dual reference there:)

The calcium perchorlate is a large problem, but the genetic modifications idea could be a good fix. And Julius Carling is actually a triple reference. If you want a hint, check his Birthday and initials. If I can find the time, I will upload another entry detailing his life up until the start date. Also, PM me if you have any suggestions for encyclopedia entries.

Ah, a reference to Christine Jones who served in the Maryland house of delegates, from 1982-1994, who was also born on Christmas. Clearly Julius will become a great law bringer.

Actually, genetics isn't going to work.

imagefly.cgi

This is the issue with CaCl2O8.

First of all, that is 4 oxygen atoms, 2 of which are not double bonded. All surrounding a Chlorine atom. This is something your body is just begging to take apart. Chlorine is something that is obviously not a very nice material to have in the blood stream.

The mircobes that can survive a perchorlate? They survive it because they reduce the chlorine into a chloride, in the process generating energy for themselves. That's the sole reason they can survive this. They use it for energy. We humans can't. We require too much energy. We have to use reactions that a perchloride simply does not have the means of producing.

Your best bet is to just drop a crapton of microbes that eat perchorlate. Now...there is a silver lining here. It is 4 oxygne atoms surrounding that chlorine. That is oxygen that is going to be emitted as waste products.

So if you want to do away with the perchorlate problem, you can do away with it by saying ti was part of the terraforming process, in generating a breathable atmosphere. Some places it might still be a issue, but sufficient work by a lord should be able to solve the issue.

This one also works because this is actualy how we deal with perchorlate contamination in RL: take a bunch of mircobes which eat it and drop it in whatever is contaminated. No need to go more complicated than a method of dealing with it we already know about.

I suggest we have a line of buildings to represent this. One represents completely untreated provinces. The next is hydroponics-like, which draw water from the surroundings and has a system to remove the percholrates like this. The next is a system of dispensing pesticide-like spray filled with these mircobes. The last is a completely cleaned province.

Well I'll be damned. I guess you do learn something everyday! I mean, I already knew that of course. How could I make a reference to something I don't know? :D

@Daedwartin Wow, I feel like a school boy all over again with all this learning! Wait, I still am :(. All jokes aside though thank you so much for contributing that! In terms of Implementation, I believe certain cities like capitals should start off with the building, but no other cities. I'm not sure if there's a way to scale prices from terrain, but one could make copies of a building that are based on the region I assume, will investigate. That way coastal provinces take much less to build than say the red wastelands in the south. Building it could jump up carrying capacity, tax production, and a few other things. The stages, as you mentioned, could be province modifiers which affects I just mentioned. Slap a MTTH on there, and you've got yourself a good event system!

Sidenote: I've been working on an EM entry, but I'm pretty tired so it's probably crap. You sweet little things'll have to wait 'till tomorrow so I can do some editing.

The last is a completely cleaned province.

well ain't this just perfect then!

colonization linked to the ongoing general terraforming effort, and linked to the gameplay via buildings producing and culturing anti-perchlorate microbes.
