Some said my last AAR looked a lot like Red Alert 1. With that in mind I'm going to play a new AAR which will look like Red Alert 2.

Game:
  • USSR
  • V.Hard/Aggressive
  • 1936 scenario
  • Some event modifications and new countries, but mostly vanilla
  • AI may be helped if it is in crisis or does something really stupid

Plan:
  • Build a navy
  • Invade and Conquer USA
  • Redeploy everything back to Europe
  • Defeat Germany & Japan
  • Defeat the remaining Entente states, if there are any

Introduction

Having decisively finished off the Left Opposition in late 1920s and going as far as assasinating Trotsky in Mexico, Stalin was more and more comming to believe that the general argument of the Left Opposition was, after all, the correct one. At first Stalin had to turn over the NEP and adopt the system of quotas known as Five Year Plans, which he originally opposed. Then, in order to accelerate the rural development he attempted forced farmland collectivization, which failed badly and led to millions of casualties especially in Russia and Ukraine. This decisive failure forced Stalin to admit that socialism cannot work in one country. Trotsky was right, USSR needed industrialized allies very soon to aid the development, otherwise USSR would not survive for long, or it would, but with huge and unbarable human casualties.

But where to look for allies?

Europe was almost completely sealed off by the Entente and its spheres of influence. The "Cordon Sanitaire" was established by the Entente efforts as early as 1919 between Germany and USSR, separating the two from each other and preventing them both from expansion. This curtain consisted mostly of Baltic States, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Romania. The latter two were part of the "Little Entente", while the former were tied to France and Britain through separate treaties. USSR was not ready to fight against the armed-to-teeth Entente countries and their allies, yet. Germany was isolated likewise, and the German KPD was struggling to win elections while its more militant leftist supporters organized sporadic uprisings which sometimes turned into full scale rebellions, such as in Berlin, in Bavaria, and in Rhur region. With the onset of Great Depression and the worldwide crisis of capitalism the chances of electoral victory seemed to increase, but the KPD wasn't the only party gaining support, the far right and nationalist parties were becoming far more popular too, and the former electorate of conservative DNVP was taken over by "revolutionary" NSDAP which meant new trouble. While the uprisings were suppressed successfully, full scale battles were being fought in the streets of Germany between the para-military forces of KPD and NSDAP with hundreds of casualties each year. In 1933 the NSDAP finally emerged triumphant and all hopes of victory in Germany were lost. Europe was now entirely hostile to USSR.

In Asia, Turkey would have been a good candidate, but Ataturk, somewhat similarly to Pilsudski, chose to betray socialism in favor of domestic nationalism once independence was achieved and secured. The Soviet agents and diplomats were still trying to peacefully influence the Turkish cabinet into accepting socialism, but were so far unsuccessful. An invasion was considered, but there was substantial threat of Entente intervention on Turkish side. Besides, Turkey was a backward nation which itself needed aid. It wouldn't be much helpful to USSR. Other southern Asian countries were even more useless.

In East Asia, the struggle continued between Chinese communists, Chinese anti-communists, and Japanese imperialists. With the Chiang's extermination campaigns in full swing and Mao's losses during the Long March, there was no hint of victory for the communist forces yet. And once again, China was far from an industrialized nation, and even in case of Communist victory, it wouldn't be able to help the development of USSR.

So Stalin's attention was turned toward Americas. USA was now the most industrialized nation on earth, and thus it would be perfect if it was a Soviet ally instead of an enemy. But the American electorate was not used to dissent or violent revolutions. With the help of the media and big businesses, the two American political parties maintained a firm grip on the US population and silenced all opposition. The Soviet spies in United States observed that there was at the time very little chance of a successful Bolshevik or even socialist revolution. However, the United States had only a very small standing army. Therefore, if the Red Army was to quickly invade American continent, Stalin reasoned, the US army wouldn't stand a chance. But how to get to America? The US had the world’s biggest navy at its disposal, bigger even than Royal Navy. It would block any attempt by the Red Army to land in North AND South America. The Red Navy, in comparison, was nothing of value. The Imperial Russian navy was once a rather effective fighting instrument, but it was at first decisively damaged by the Japanese in 1904, and then completely screwed over during the Russian Civil War with more than half of the ships joining with the White forces and at the end of the war ending up in the hands of the British and French. Those which stayed with the Reds were now ancient ships which were practically useless. In order to be able to invade the American continent, the Navy had to be rebuilt practically from the scratch. Since US has still not recovered from the Great Depression, now would be a perfect time to invade and catch the sick US economy off-guard.

And so, at a secret meeting of the Politburo in 1936 the decision was made.
America had to be invaded as soon as possible.

The "Stalin Plan" was a secret set of Soviet diplomatic goals and initiatives which were to be carried out by Soviet diplomats, spies, agents, military advisors, and representatives around the world.
  • Part 1 of the plan aimed at playing Nazi Germany and Entente against each other and diverting their attention towards each other through public diplomatic initiatives and statements at the League of Nations.
  • Part 2 aimed at secret escalation of military tensions and encouragement of military actions by both Hitler and Entente against each other. The goal was to ultimately make sure that they fight another long imperialist war and thus balance each other out.
  • Part 3 focused on the military balance which the Soviet Union should strive to maintain in Asia. The Soviet Union must make sure that Japan and China fight one another, and neither Chiang nor Hirohito prevail in this conflict. Thus the two biggest antagonists of USSR in Asia will cancel each other out as well.
  • Part 4 called for strong and intensive revolutionary actions in the following countries: Turkey, Cuba, and Mexico. The soviet spy network should be concentrated in these countries and one way or another their acting governments must be replaced by those friendly to USSR.
  • Part 5 empathized maintaining friendly relations with the nations bordering Soviet Union, as well as Communist China. However, at the same time the Soviet Union must hide its weakness with strong diplomatic statements.

The plan was adopted in January 1936 at another secret Politburo meeting, but its goals and even its existance were to be kept strictly secret. Maxim Litvinov, as the chief Soviet diplomat, was to be the primary man in carrying out this new policy. After being informed about it, Maxim immidiately set out to carry out his orders. Being a Jew, Maxim had special prejudice against Nazi Germany and its allies and that played well with Stalin's objectives. The very first thing he did was to demand further economic sanctions against Italy, which was at the time involved in a war against sovereign Ethiopia. The demands were obviously rejected, and the acting arms embargo against italy was violated by practically everyone from Germany to France.
In March, when the German troops moved into the Rhineland, Maxim publicly demanded military intervention and forced expulsion of German troops. France was pleased at the Soviet attention towards Rhineland, but along with Britain the French were unwilling to take any decisive action.

Under cover of the tourist expeditions, the NKVD agents started flooding into Cuba and Mexico through neutral Spain. Another group arrived to Ankara at about same time.

In the meantime Italy succesfully overwhelmed Ethiopian defences and proclaimed the union of Ethiopian Empire with the Kingdom of Italy under the leadership of Vittorio Emmanuel. In July, all remaining economic sanctions against Italy were lifted.

The spy war was not waged by USSR alone, soon the NKVD counter-intelligence department detected signs of more and more spies arriving to Soviet Union from Italy, France, Germany, Britain, United States, and Japan. The NKVD reported that there were about 60 foreign spy agencies operating within the Soviet Union at the time. Something had to be urgently done to eliminate them, especially since it was vitally important that no one learned about the existance of "Stalin Plan", codenamed Plan 316.

The Soviet production was working at an all time high. Any suspected dissenters were jailed and forced to construct new factories in Siberia. Although the production goals and quotas were altogether unrealistic, nevertheless in one year the Soviet industrial output increased to 150%, which was a phenomenal achievement altogother, but Stalin recongized that such high production increase could not be maintained forever, and one way or another the Soviet Union still needed industrialized allies.

In the meantime the Soviet military scientists were trying to catch up to Western European empires in naval technology. The spy network in Britain, France, and Japan was greatly helping in aquiring blueprints for naval designs and combat doctrines. In mid May the Great War Aircraft Carrier design was researched. At the same time research was also being conducted in the areas of light and heavy cruisers.

Wow, the USSR is getting scary.
Turkey, Mexico, Cuba- and on to the States themselves!

Brilliant idea!

Jesus - brilliant plan - Stalin turns in his grave, because he didnt think of it!

gotta watch this closely

*kami888 tries to make another update and moves*

Hey! - freeze! - I said I have to watch this CLOSELY! :D

In July, Germany signs an agreement with Austira, stating that:
"Austria's general policy and its policy toward Germany in particular shall be constantly guided by the principle that Austria recognizes herself as a German state"...

That just doesn't sound too good. Maxim and Ciano (Mussolini's foreign minister) complain together at the League of Nations that Austrian sovereignty is being violated. But it is the right of Austria to sign such agreement, and forbiding it from doing so would be just another violation of Austrian sovereignty. Thus, there is nothing anyone can do in this situation but observe. Mussolini is outraged at the expansion of German influence southward, and reportedly even sends an angry message to Hitler personally. Stalin decides not to go that far. After all, the Soviet-German trade agreement is greatly benefiting the economies of both countries. It would be unwise to cancel this agreement.

In Asia a conflict breaks out between KMT and one of its largest warlord allies. The Guanxi leader demanded that KMT takes action against Japan, when Chiang refused on the grounds that the CCP had to be smashed before the war against Japan could be waged, Guanxi declared war on KMT and its army marched northward, aiming at forcing Chiang into submission and eventually declaring war on Japan.

A civil war finally breaks out in Spain with a general military uprising against the Republic. The USSR immidiately declares support for the Republican defenders, and Stalin himself makes a speech in Leningrad expressing the solidarity of Soviet and Spanish workers and calling for defence of Spanish worker's democracy from fascist militarists.

The Spanish government accepts the Soviet armed aid package and advisors as well as several thousands of Soviet and International volunteers. In the meantime, Germany and Italy send help to Nationalist rebels. Entente states express complete neutrality, but Franco recieves important aid from American "Standard Oil" company through Mexico. The Soveit Union offers direct and full-scale military intervention to Spain, but the offer is turned down by the Republican government, apparently out of the fear or Soviet domination.
83632724pv0.png

Nonetheless, the Soviet Union begins preparations for direct military intervention in case the Spanish government changes mind or if things go really bad for them. Transport foltillias are deployed at Leningrad Krondstat base and loaded with best divisions in the Soviet army.
45849987ik0.png

But actually things seem to go rather well for the Republicans. Even better, the civil war causes radicalisation of Spanish politics and restructuring of Spanish government. The new government of the Republic is strongly left-leaning and includes many socialists, and some Communists and Anarchists. However, the government still refuses direct Soviet intervention.
60826081ql9.png

In China things seem to go really bad for the KMT. Both CCP and Guanxi armies make significant gains. However, Stalin believes that these are only temporary gains and the tide will turn very soon. Thus the Comintern advises Mao and Zhang to generally keep their forces in Shanxi and don't try any far-reaching military adventures. Of course Mao choses to ignore their advises and orders the CCP army to advance in all directions.
10sx1.png

War is definately going well for the Republicans, but Stalin still dispatchs 5 divisions to the Spanish northern coast just in case.
11fb9.png

A month later those transports full of Soviet troops and tanks are still standing near the Spanish coast and waiting. The Spanish government still refuses to let them in.

So... Red Alert 2... when can we see the tesla soldiers?
Unfortunately I can't mod the game that far... Is there any mod where I could get Tesla soldiers from?

i guess the spainards think they wont need your help..
Stalin knows better what they need and what they don't need!

Jesus - brilliant plan - Stalin turns in his grave, because he didnt think of it!
Sure, invading America would have definately worked in real life! If the Soviets just had those Kirov airships... and V3 missiles.

"A little turtle sees BIG Russian missiles comming. And it ducks, and it covers."

oh no! - not duck and cover - Bert the friendly turtle - sick shit telling kids to hide under wodden desks while an A bomb blasts everything to tiny pieces!!!! :(

Not really it was more to do for a mass grave or easier to know where they were in the aftermath. My mom and dad both told me about how this drill somehow blocked out the atomic flash. Oh to grow up in the 50's

oh yeah didnt look at it that way - little timmy was near the corner - lisa at left - Alfred on her left......yeah, makes it easier to clean up afterwards. Today we can atleast say that if somebody by accident pushes some button and starts the big boom-boom "chainletter" the bombs are so powerfull by now that there isnt going to be anything left of the surface - no suffering - just *blib* and everything is Bye bye-birdie - saves a lot of work afterwards - you gotta love technological advances

only thing worse than growing up in the us in the 50's: germany in the 30's.......tough luck! :(

A meeting of the Little Entente is held in Bratislava. Among the other things, the foreign ministers of Yugoslavia, Romania, and Czechoslovakia state that they all:
  • regret that Austria violated the clauses of St. Germain
  • agree on necessity of opposing Hungary's rearmament
  • regret the German press attacks on Czechoslovakia because of Soviet military bases there, calling them a "pure invention."
Soviet military bases in Czechoslovakia?!?! Only Goebbels could come up with something like this. Stalin privately laughed at his efforts. :)

In October, Hitler officially recognizes Italian anexation of Ethiopia. This helps to improve the German-Italian relations after the dramatic setback in Austria.
Mussolini is pleased. A month later he anncounces the formation of the Axis.
He says: "The Italo-German Entente forms a vertical line Berlin-Rome. This line is not a partition but is rather an AXIS around which all European states can collaborate"
Collaborate? Sure. More like be invaded and annexed. Once again Stalin laughs.

However, in the same month things get a bit too far, when Germany and Japan sign an Anti-Comintern pact, promising to help and inform each other about communist activities and assist each other in case of communist and/or Soviet aggression. This is no time for laughing, the possible German alliance with Japan might force the Soviet Union to fight on two fronts... This isn't good. Stalin is pissed.

BUT Stalin is even more pissed at the fact that he STILL can't convince the Spanish government to let Soviet troops in. Another month passes, and the Soviet transports are still standing off the coast of Spain. When Maxim personally flies to Spain to insist on the Soviet position, one of the liberal Spanish deputies in the parliament says that Spain will declare war on USSR should the Soviet transports enter Spanish territorial waters and attempt to "invade Spain".
13fv8.png

Stalin is infuriated by this statement and resolves that Spanish bourgeois democracy is no longer of any use. The Comintern then secretly gives instruction for the NKVD and PCE (Spanish Communist Party) to take over Spanish government and make sure that the Soviet divisions are let in. The document instructs to communists to "attempt not to antagonize POUM and the CNT-FAI, but if necessary, don't hesitate to use all means at the party's disposal, including police and military force to neutralize the opposition". The Soviet troops which were already in Spain are authorized to be prepared for a possible conflict and cooperate with the PCE. The goal was to eliminate liberal and moderate socialist opposition and bring the government under control of the radical pro-soviet government. POUM and Anarchists were to be invited to participate in the coalition government, but in case of their refusal their respective political parties will be expelled and eventually banned.
14sb5.png

And so it happens. The last Nationalist stronghold falls in early October and Spain is reunified. At the same time as the victory celebrations are being held, the communists proclaim that the elimination of reactionary forces must lead to a social revolution. The speakers accuse the liberal members of traison and quasi-fascism and the NKVD helps to intimidate the elites in expelling them from the acting government. A week later the president dissolved the parliament and ordered a re-election. During a massive electoral fraud, the PCE took over 233 seats in the parliament and almost immidiatly announced coalition with PSOE with its 72 seats and 42 of the Republican Left. Other left-wing parties were excluded from the governing coalition and the right-wing parties were forbidden from participation altogether. The opposition parties reacted bitterly to the occasion. The POUM (which officially got 86 seats), organized a mass rally together with CNT and the Centre party. The protest was broken up violenetly by the police. Just two weeks after the new government was formed, it signed a treaty of Friendsip and Cooperation with USSR and requested the entrance of Soviet armed contingent. Stalin was finally pleased.
15cx0.png

With the support of the local trade unions, the FAI declared that the Spanish revolution was betrayed and revolted in the south. The pro-soviet coalition forces were quick to compare the anarchist rebellion with the military uprising just half a year ago and the propaganda machine under government's control grouped the two together and called for the final defence of the Republic from fascistic traitors. But in all actuality the GSFS (Group of Soviet Forces in Spain) did most of the battle for them.

In the process of the battle the Anarchists, probably not recognizing international borders, for some reason decided to invade Portugal. Perhaps they simply got lost and entered Portugal by accident. In any case, the Portugese fascist dictator was more than happy to help crush the anarchists, which he did. In the end, however, the Portugese Army clashed with a group of Soviet forces in a small pitched battle in a shouthern Spanish town, but retreated back to Portugal as soon as the Soviets brought in overwhelming reinforcements.

POUM was soon banned while being accused of supporting the rebellion. Thus the last major anti-Soviet opposition in Spain was eliminated.

Now with opposition gone in Spain, what is your next target.
