My Duke was stricken with schizophrenia. About two years later, very fortunately, he recovered. However, in the meantime he was hit with the event "periods of catatonic schizophrenia" which decreased every attribute by 5. Even after the recovery, this loss of 5 points in each category is permanent. Is that WAD or a bug? I recall in EU2 there were some situations very broadly similar to this (that is, what was supposed to be a short term penalty turning into a long term or permanent loss), and the standard solution was to edit the savefile. Is that the case for this situation as well, or is my Duke really supposed to have permanently lost some of his ability?

Pretty much WAD I'd imagine. I don't think the game has any way of knowing that the changes happened due to that event, so there is no way to reverse it. I know you can get it more than once. If they had wanted to do it the other way they could have made a "catatonic schizophrenia" trait, which could have been removed later, like they do for illness -> pneumonia.

Basically schizophrenia is a really really bad trait. You can technically get a beneficial outcome - if you get one of those schizophrenia events giving decent traits, and then recover... Had this happen recently with my awesome, papal controller King, who got the Hearing Angles event which was pretty cool. But most of the time you're going to end up with a permanently crippled character one way or the other.
