How would that be non-sensical? What is nonsensical is sixteen-year-old girl having a higher martial than thirty-year-old who is veteran of thousand battles.
In CK2 the 17 year old girl have higher martial score than Subtai and Genghis Khan which is beyond ridiculous.

I am of the opinion that battlefield experience should not only raise your dueling ability but your martial too, but IIRC vanilla only supports the former.
See how it work in HOI4, your commanders get better and better and also get various traits for doing various things which make them even better at doing what they have already been doing.

You can make it work like statemanship in Imperator: Rome, each character have an attribute level for their potential, so for example Genghis Khan maybe have 30 in all 5 attributes but only have 25% martial experience and thus only have an effective score of 25% * 30 = 7.5 = 8 if round up and maybe 10% diplomatic experience and thus only have an effective diplomacy attribute of 3.

Such a system could also be used to promote loyalty in your generals, as well. If they're going around and sweeping up wins, they'd be less likely to be tempted to run off to some random Duke's court who may or may not engage in any battles to begin with.

It also creates a sense of rivalry amongst your generals. "Why wasn't I pick to lead this men in this battle?" will be a running issue players have to deal with.

And players might potentially have to decide between choosing loyal commanders vs choosing excellent commanders.

I'd wish martial would be tied to victories in battle. I find it odd that there are women with high martial (+10) who have never led armies, meanwhile, you have generals who have won several battles but still martial of 5. IMO more sensible system would gap martial gained from traits and education to 4, after that only way to increase it would be to win battles.
I see where you're coming from, though one could argue that you'd actually learn more (and therefore should gain more points) from losing a battle (assuming you survive).
