Panzer Commander is a wonderful book.
I highly reccomend it to anyone interested in WWII.
It's not just a war-story, but it's also the story
of Lt. Col. Hans von Luck, and his rise through the ranks,
personal tragedy during the war, and his time in Soviet captivity.

Achtung! Panzer! by Heinz Guderian is pretty good.

The forgoten soldier by Guy Fauker is the eastern front from an infantryman's PoV and is also great.

Considering the economic, political, and infrastructure focus of HOI2, I would recommend Richard Overy's Why the Allies Won. It treats WW2 as a clash of industrial and technological might in addition to manpower and strategy, while avoiding the simple "Allied steamroller" thesis.

Since HOI2 treats the war from the same point of view, this book might be more inspiring than histories of particular battles.

Agreed. This is a most excellent book, especially for tech / econ types.
The chapter on leadership / management styles was very interesting as
well. Very highly reccomended.

"Inside Hitler's High Command" by Geoffrey P. Megargee, a good book about how the German High Command was structured, how it evolved 1918-1945, and its strengths and weaknesses.

Also anything written by Jack Greene & Alessandro Massignani, particularly "Rommel's North Africa Campaign: September 1940 - November 1942" and "The Naval War in the Mediterranean 1940-1943".

I've just recently bought Glantz's "When Titans Clashed" and "Before Stalingrad - Barbarossa, Hitler's Invasion of Russia 1941", looks really good. :)

For those who enjoy playing Japan, John Toland's "Rising Sun", though a bit dated, can't be topped. His accounts of the war room dialogues and decision-making by Japan's politicians and military leaders are just as good as his descriptions of the battles.

But I have to give a tip of the hat to Brasidias; his suggestion of "Paris 1919" is brilliant. I've been reading WW2 history for over 35 years and I learned more new ideas and perspectives from that book that any other book I can recall.

A GREAT one for those who are interested in playing as the Axis and changing the outcome of the war would be "How Hitler Could Have Won World War II" by Bevin Alexander. It's easy to read, not too long, and gives a good overview of the whole war, pointing out along the way the major errors Hitler made and what should have been done differently.

Since my shipmentg is delayed I have decided to restart my reading of Shirer's the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. It is I have to say the best perspective of the War from the German point of view. Not as narrow as Speer's book but broad enough to get a better view of the Third Reich from the inside. A very good fast paced read from the beginnings of the Nazi party to its intimidation of the West and then to its destruction. I have to admit that it is a tad better than Toland's Rising Sun but it could just be Shirer had more sources to work with.

Popski's Private Army - A great read about gentlemanly warfare behind the lines warfare in North Africa, it has war and fighting, diplomacy, personal thoughts and tea.
One line: (from what I can remeber off hand):
"A did not really like the mortars, far to noisy, where as the machine gun fire was much more enjoyable." Classic.

Victory at Sea by Dunnigan and Nofi for the War in the Pacific-very good on comparing the ships, planes and divisions used. They're former board wargame authors-Dunnigan produced a ton of games at SPI in the 1970s.

Dirty Little Secrets of WWII by the same guys. It covers all theatres and is a good "bathroom" read.

Brute Force by John Ellis-argues the Allies had lousy commanders, but kept throwing masses of tanks and planes at the Germans until they caved.

For alternate history essays: The Hitler Options: Alternate Decisions of World War II (Macksey, ed.) and Rising Sun Victorious (Tsouras, ed.).

I read Rise & Fall of the Third Reich when I was 12-much too long ago. :)
