http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_of_Trebizond

After the Fourth Crusade, there were three major successor states to the then defunct Byzantine Empire - the Empire of Nicaea, the Despotate of Epirus, and Trebizond.

The Empire of Nicaea ended up retaking Constantinople, but Trebizond and the Komnenos Dynasty remained valid pretenders to the Roman throne.

It'd be pretty cool to have them with cores on the Byzantine lands, and it'd add a slightly more interesting narrative to the region than what is currently portrayed.
