So, one of the most common complaints that I see is just how easy it is to keep an unrealistically large Empire together; the AI, particularly Muslims, has a tendency to blob up overwhelmingly, and with players, it is even more egregious.

It should be harder to conquer a huge Empire, and hold it together! That WC can be done so easily at a time when it should have been impossible is immersion breaking, and makes it too tempting to just map paint forever.

So why not solve this problem by having it both ways? I propose that there be a rule with several settings, which can be tuned according to player preference that would work something like this:

AI Independence Desire:

Standard: No change. AI Characters will only join independence factions if they are outside their liege's primary de jure area, or if they of a different culture from their liege, and will only do so if they have low opinions.

Strong: AI Characters are more likely to join independence factions, and will do so if they are outside their liege's primary de jure realm, even if they have relatively high opinions of their liege.

Very Strong: As with Strong, but vassals with a King Tier title, even a viceroyalty, are much more likely to join an independence faction.

By default, vassal kings should be in an independence faction. However every religion should have their own independence faction

And also, there should be more dynastic meddling. The dynasty head should be allowed to infere in all sorts of things (like marriages/betrothals and such). However, if the part of the dynasty doesn't like your meddling the denounce you and start they own dynasty (like with the other Karling family and such)
That way (former) dynasty members could join independence factions
