Okay, here we go :D

1 - Wagner. I can't stress how awesome his orchestras are for epic gameplay, particularly Tannhäuser and The Ride of the Valkyries. For added effect, when those play during the Franco-Prussian War... It's too damn awesome. :)

2 - Anthems: "Het Wilhelmus", "Deutschlandlied", "La Marseillaise", "God Save the Queen", "Prayer of the Russians" - "God Save the Tsar" (Can't recommend those enough)... They help a lot in regards to atmosphere.

2.1 - Patriotic Music. They complement A LOT the soundtrack. "Land of Hope and Glory" and "Heart of Oak" for the Brits is incredible. It's weird listening to those when you are fighting against the song's country though. :)

3 - Popular songs. OK... I am a sucker for some folk music of the time - things like the Irish folk songs, which there are LOTS. I feel that it is a quite an addition, mostly because it provides a break from the classical tunes we get used to.

Hmm, the Wilhelmus is quite old, not really 19th century, it originates from the time of Wilhelm van Oranje himself, either when he was alive or just after his assassination, the late sixteenth century or maybe early seventeenth century. it wouldn't really fit in the time frame of Victoria (and you can hear it in my opinion, it's quite dull actually :D )

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I appreciate it. Downloaded some Gustov ,Tschaikowsky, Sousa and Wagner so far. Not disappointed.

Although I'm a sucker for Vivaldi, is there any 19th century scores somewhat similar?

I think the music included is quite fitting as it is to be fair. Good for the period.

Also, about American composers... it was Europe that was the really 'cultured' area of the time... that's probably why it is mainly European composed music played in-game??

Aside from the several Sousa compositions, it's mainly European. 19th century America was comparable in terms of culture to the best European countries anyway and excelled them by the 20th.

Well... not sure about 'excelled', but I do like Family Guy :D

Perhaps what would be nice is (this is another thing for a developer of the source code to work on) if the country you were playing had their own traditional music played when playing as them. Some Chinese music as China might be a nice touch, for instance. Maybe also the ability to alter your playlist if you didn't wish to be listneing to that music when playing as China, for example.

Clearly they did not.

This is just to make a point, as it is becoming annoying that you can be so blinded by patriotism for your country.

We’ll go through the list of cultural techs used in-game, one-by-one, and see where they were principally developed. All the cultural techs are considered cultural achievements, even if in hindsight we do not view it in that same way – they are given good effects upon discovery in-game.

In addition, they are awarded to a nation (or area) for that nation (or area) having significant persons of mention being key players in the forwarding of that cultural aspect. Of course there were more key players, but these are awarded for the first few pioneers of such cultural ‘achievements’.

1) AESTHETICS
a) Classicism & Early Romanticism – Western Europe
b) Romanticism – Western Europe
c) Realism – France and Italy in particular
d) Impressionism – France in particular
e) Expressionism – Germany in particular
f) Mass Culture – Global (naturally – we’ll go halves or none on this one)

2) PHILOSOPHY
a) Late Enlightenment Philosophy – Western Europe
b) Idealism – UK in particular
c) Empiricism - UK in particular
d) Analytic Philosophy - UK and Austria in particular
e) Phenomenology & Hermeneutic – France
f) Anti-Rationalism – UK in particular

3) SOCIAL THOUGHT
a) Malthusian Thought – UK (Thomas Malthus)
b) Positivism – France in particular
c) Functionalism – Western Europe
d) Biologism – Western Europe
e) Social Science – Western Europe
f) Social Alienation – Germany in particular

4) POLITICAL THOUGHT
a) Enlightenment Thought - Europe
b) Ideological Thought – Europe (development of Liberalism, Socialism, Communism and Fascism)
c) State & Government – Neither: everywhere had its own balance between these
d) Nationalism & Imperialism – Neither: national identities already established everywhere
e) Revolution & Counterrevolution – Particular consciousness by those in Europe
f) Mass Politics – Hard to tell: all countries had major political parties

5) PSYCHOLOGY
a) Introspectionism - Germany
b) Associationism – UK and France in particular
c) Phenomenalism – UK in particular
d) Experimental Psychology – Germany in particular
e) Psychoanalysis – Austria in particular
f) Behaviourism – U.S.A. in particular

I know this list isn’t perfect, but it was always going to be general. Of course there are other nations with input into many aspects of cultural advancement, but generally these are the nations with significant leaders in those fields.

Anyway, this list shows that Europe developed most of the cultural aspects of the 19th century. In addition to these points, it was European cities like Paris, London, Rome, etc... that were the fashion capitals of the world - Paris being generally regarded as the most fashionable city in the world even after WW1. European culture really was the global culture at the time: photography, cinema, as well as other forms of art all being developed within Europe. This is culture.

Also, I know this has been very rude, but your patriotism (although admirable) was beginning to become insulting and rude as well. Whether you like it or not, the 19th century (and partly into the 20th century as well) was the age of EUROPEAN dominance. Any historian could tell you this. America only really became the pre-eminent western culture following WW2 and the subsequent dismantling of European global influence in their respective Empires.

Let's not turn this into a Trans-Atlantic chest thumping exercise please. Keep the conversation civil, and if you want to discuss the history of cultural developments it might be wisest to start a thread in the history forum, as that is where discussion of history should be undertaken, this forum should focus mainly on gameplay and how best history is reflected in gameplay.
