Received a fleet of 7 ships from another country somehow. Bug?

Just purchased the HoI4 Bundle with all DLCs, first game I play as Canada in Ironman. Roughly 4 or 5 hours in all of a sudden I have 7 American ships, in a fleet on their own. I own them and they act like any other ships I have, but because I don't have the base design I cannot refit them. I don't know how/when this happened as I'm playing Ironman and can't go back further than when I already had them.

I'm just curious if this is a bug or is it possible that my patrols somehow captured them? Could not find any information on this. Mostly just curious if this is a feature I could use in the future or if I should shove them into a corner somewhere, because I'm not supposed to have them and it doubled my current navy.

If anyone has any ideas, I would be glad to hear your thoughts.

Neither. You received those destroyers because the USA AI player gave them to you as part of the "Destroyers-for-bases deal" (Wikipedia) with the UK. They're yours now to do anything you like with them.

Addendum: This event is unique to the USA (giver), UK and Canada (receivers). If you're playing one of the receiving countries, you don't have any control over it. It's not a "feature" per se, it's an action that only the USA player, human or AI, can take.

Wow, I'm from Canada and currently live in the East Coast and never heard of this until now. That explains why Newfoundland flipped as this happened then. I figured I missed something trying to cure the great depression. Thanks alot for the education!
