Rebolusyon! (Revolution!). Philippines AAR DD 1.2/GC36

front.gif

After so much time reading other peoples AAR’s I decided about 3 weeks ago to do my own! So after weighing up which game to do it in I opted for the glory of WW2 rather than CK, EU2 or Vicky.

I have made modifications to the Philippines doing away with puppet status and American military access. I reworked the tech teams teams and starting techs (the latter minimally), replaced Macarthur and Wainwright with Filipino’s and expanded the industrial and resources of the islands; in addition the archipelago is now a Leninist state. I will try thread all of this together in the prologue.

Prologue
The betrayal of the first republic by the US and the subsequent war was costly with some one million Filipino’s dying in the conflict that officially ended in 1902; However in the south of the country the Muslims continued their own struggle until 1913. In the aftermath of the war all opposition to US rule remain limited to the defeated Nationalists, who did not see the growing Marxists who were secretly building up their strength and in 1922 the formation of the Progressive Workers Party saw the communist possessing a political front while secretly developing armed forces in the Cordillera mountains of Luzon island, It would be these cadre’s that would form the backbone of the future resistance to the condescending colonialists.

The onset of the great depression weakened the US whose populace suffered amid mounting difficulties, as a result the drastic military cut backs left the US military presence, besides the 7th Fleet, in the islands depleted and weakened, a fact not missed by the Communists who bided their time. The formal establishment of the Philippine Communist Party (PKP) On November 7, 1930 was followed by the first offensive on November 21 with PKP forces already in place and overrunning the US naval base in Subic bay, by December 14th the ‘Philippine division’ and elements of the pro-US Filipinos isolated in Manila, while elsewhere in the country the populace rose in mass revolt attacking and disarming the US backed Philippine Constabulary. The besieged Manila was infiltrated over the course of December and on the 4th January 1931 attacks in the southern districts of the city led to widespread defections among the Pro-US Philippine forces and on the 6th January the fall of the Intramuros fortress left the local US forces position untenable who surrendered on the 12th January. The financially strapped US federal government ruled out a reconquest of the islands accepting the fact that the US had lost control of the islands and in particular the military bases and reluctantly recognized the independent Philippines government on the 20th January 1931.

The new leader of the islands, Crisanto Evangelista, instituted the ‘'Peoples Republic of the Philippines’’ and with a little backing from Comintern embarked on modernisation of the nations infrastructure, in particular the five year plan for industrialisation led to the four fold increase in the industrial capacity of the islands, the modernisation of agriculture and land reform greatly improved the position of the rural populace. From 1931-1934 young communists and socialists travelled to the archipelago to help in the modernisation drives helping out in anyway they could however refusal of the PKP to bow to Soviet dominance led to a break with Moscow in 1934 reducing Comintern support to a trickle, however the expertise acquired in this short time had greatly improved Filipino expertise. However with the growing tensions in China and the rise of Fascism in Europe the neglected armed forces need reform and expansion.

OOC:I will add more screenies to this post tomorrow to give you all pictures of the other changes and industrial expansion, Unfortunately i am using my work PC to post while playing the game at home, and I did not remember to save all of the screenshots onto my USB memory stick.

My long term aim is to survive and perhaps help Mao to victory in China, all the while being wary of the Japs to the north and US to the west (incidentally i changed the relations with the Americans to 0 so as to reflect the break in relations in 1931), perhaps liberation of indonesia?? initially i need to ensure developement and arming as i have taken away the US forces based there and only retained the Manila garrison which has been renamed ''Revolutionary Guard''.

I have not decided which doctrine to undertake, i noticed in another Philipines AAR someone decided on the Japanese model which sounds good to me but i have also been contemplating the Human wave doctrines which would be inline with Communist theory.

Hmm..this is different. We rarely see a philipeans AAR, let alone a Communist one. Nice start ! :D

Looks interesting, never seen a Philippine commie AAR, but where on earth will you expand to.

Philippines AARs are quite rare. Let's see how the Mexico of Asia fares.

lifeless: it certainly is :)

Spitfire_Pilot: As we say in the Philippines - Salamat Kaibigan

GeneralHannibal: Good question, i am perhaps looking to build up towards 1940 and should the Japs get bogged downin China i may have a chance to expand into Formosa and maybe the Pacific Islands. however it looks more likely to perhaps 'liberate' Siam and perhaps Guangxi should it survive Nationalist CHinese pressure, oh and lets not forget the Dutch East Indies however this would require hitting them before the Netherlands joins the allies. I suppose it will come down to a oppertunity kinda thing, whne one arises i may strike :D

As for the commie thing no country in asia is in more need of a revolution than La Filipinas ;)

Ksim3000: Cheers.

chefportnen: yeah had to be done, i have tried a couple of games within the US puppet status and found it intolerable soooo i went with the independent option. (ang pinoy ka?)

anonymous4401: certainly rare, there are two uncompleted on the AAR library, i hope to play this right through and leave at least one completed AAR for the sunny archipelago.

This is to give you rundown of the provinces and their new IC base, however for some reason i did not realize i was looking at Borneo in this shot?

And this is the final draft screenie of the Tech teams.

therev: Yeah for sure the japanese look set to be the main threat, i hoping to counter there naval abilities with naval bombers.

Incidentally i have not given a rundown of the starting tech chnages...essentially i have given the armed forces early infantry/marines and all the great war artillery, interwar fighter and bomber and great destroyers & cruisers. On the industrial side i have granted first level machine tools second level construction coupled with first level agriculture.
Doctrine wise i have not prepicked a land doctrine as i am still split on which path to take and i have not added any naval doctrines. AIr doctrines have been limited to the granting of Flying Circus doctrine.

Rebolusyon! (Revolution!) Part 1

Malacañang Palace, Manila, New Years Day 1936.
palace-2.gif

Crisanto Evangelino yawned and stretched tired from the exhaustive feast to celebrate the new year the night before, looking out of his window he surveyed the gardens adjacent to the palace, it had been five years since independence and the five year plans for modernisation and industrialisation were now at an end, while exhaustive a process the transformation of the Archipelago nation was stunning propelling it forward to a new level. However amid the jubilant progress of the nation the actual military strength of the islands had been neglected with many of the cadre’s of 1931 having left military life in favour of civilian life and the only significant military body in existence was the Revolutionary Guard in Manila which was largely a garrison force.

A detachment of the Revolutionary Guard.

The High Command had met in Batangas on the 28th December to discuss how best to initiate the expansion of the armed forces; despite the pleas of the chief of staff Luis Taruc for immediate expansion of the ground forces the navy received priority and the commissioning of a light cruiser (to be christened ‘’PNS Lapu Lapu’’) and two destroyer flotilla’s which were to be built by the Elizalde co-operative (a private firm that was nationalized during the revolution in ’31)

Orders were due to be placed later today for the raising of infantry divisions and two fighter squadrons, Evangelino felt confident that new industrial might of the nation would be able to maintain a steady output in the drive to arm the nation, ‘’but will we have enough time’’ Crisanto thought ‘’if anyone wanted to crush the revolution there would be very little to oppose them but at least we now have the means with which to build a credible armed forces to defend the revolution’’ true enough and this train of thought reminded of the research that was decided on at Batangas, the chief of the air force, Joe Rogers, lobbied hard for work to begin on development of air doctrine and this was agreed upon. In addition it was agreed to go ahead on work on a census-tabulating machine to aid further research, Crisanto smiled ‘’maybe we can do this’’ he thought.

Crisanto turned away from the window and returned to his desk and surveyed a map of east Asia, the uncertainties in the region worried him for really who knows what course the Imperialist Japanese would take, while in China the chaos of the warlord rule filled Crisanto with dread ‘’first thing first’’ he said out loud to himself ‘’we defend the revolution before embarking on overseas adventures’’.

OOC: So that’s 2 days of gameplay out of the way , I will try to get a next update posted by this Friday. I also still need to get trade agreements up and running as i need to bridge the gap in Energy and Metal production and get the orders for infantry and such down anyway till later this week, cheers. ANd indeed it looks like i will persue the japanese model land doctrine.

Oh yeah i forgot to add that Macarthur has been replaced by Luis Taruc while Wainwright has made way for Gen. Macalinao (not a factual person).

Jape: well to be honest when viewing the Japs in other games i have had they tend to get really bogged down in china so i am kinda banking on that, apart from a smallish navy my main weapon against them will be the naval bomber :) . And Yes Indonesia is very tempting mind you as a puppet in past games they tend to just build nothing but infantry  however Indonesia looks like what i am going to gear towards and then Siam once the army is expanded to a good level. Guanxi would be cool but i cannot see myself strong enough for that in time as the Clique tends to feel the wrath of Chiang Kai SHek early on

Lord Valentine: thanks, Indonesia looks likely if i can get developed quickly enough (perhaps late '38) and then Siam, in the long term should the Japs get sucked into a two front war between China and US i may be able to snatch Formosa and Okinawa but that may be a mere pipedream, i will see what arises and act accordingly.

Long term diplomatic strategy is to repair relations with Cominterm and cultivate better links with Republican Spain and Mao's China and maybe accelerate de-colonisation :)

This looks to be quite different. It will be fun to see how it all develops.

stnylan: Thanks, i hope it will pan out well as well :)

Chefporten: Cool, i am half, my mother is from Manila however the family roots are down in Negros.

Lifeless: well not so much of a major navy, just a small number of lesser vessels, i plan to try combat the IJN with air power.

I actually have an update to post spanning '36 and most of '37 but i have to structure it together and i am hoping to have this up for digestion later today, cheers.
