Here's a little something for the beta testers and Johan to shed some light on... :)

I know new nations can appear if rebellions go unchecked for long enough, but is this always the case, and are these nations always historically accurate (flags, uniforms, etc)? Are there generic 'rebel' (pirate) nations that are impossible to negotiate with?

Some I know are in the game, e.g. Prussia and the Netherlands, but what about other likely candidates like Ireland, Norway, Greece and Holstein (Holstein is actually a quite important minor that should really be in the game)?

Countries that could appear from revolts include nations such as..

Netherlands, Eire, Norway, Bretagne, Ukraine, Sardinia etc.. It is a rather big list though.

Regarding the Hansa:

If the Hansa is annexed and the province of Holstein revolts, it should re-emerge as the Duchy of Holstein. The same goes for the Hansa provinces Bremen, Mecklenburg and Pommerania. The Hansa, being a league of cities with insignificant territorial claims would be very unlikely to ever rise again. Historically, the mentioned principalities existed alongside the Hansa cities even during the Hansa's golden age.

Some likely (and cool) minors: Novgorod, Luxemburg, Lithuania, Croatia and Greece.

Unlikely (but cool) minors: Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Wales and Constantinople.

I don't know... The Hansa is a very special case. This merchant league had already passed its zenith in 1492 and was almost destined to lose all practical importance with the rise of powerful nation states.

In fact, I am not sure I would have included the Hansa as a nation if I had designed this game, especially if it would result in losing no less than four historical minors - it's a tough call.

If Lubeck/Mecklenburg is annexed, the Hansa should never be able to rise again, IMO. Thus, a rebellion in Mecklenburg would be more likely to yield a unified 'Duchy of Mecklenburg'. Uprisings in Holstein, Bremen and Pommerania should also result in those respective minor nations.

Another capital province that could be annexed and possibly rise as a new nation is Constantinople. This is much less likely, but is still a distinct historical possibility. It would probably not come about due to a rebellion, though, but perhaps as the result of a concerted liberation effort by the neighboring Christian nations. IMHO, it would be way cool to restore this truly ancient nation.

Imagine you're playing the HRE, Poland, Venice or Spain and you manage to conquer Constantinople... Now, instead of negotiating a peace treaty with the Ottomans you could decide to restore it as a separate nation. This event could automatically trigger the loss of several surrounding ungarrisoned provinces to the new nation, regardless of who is presently holding them. Oh, and the victory points would flow to the nation that succeeded with this extraordinary coup. :)
