reasons for creating an anti-pope

Haven't used anti-popes in a while now, since they can be kinda gamey, but I just now installed an anti-pope for roleplay reasons.

situation is as follows, the Golden Horde holds Hungary and a crusade was called

however I called shenanigans on the person who was granted the kingdom of Hungary for the following reasons:

Serene Doge of Hungary (formerly doge of Genoa) contribution: 6000 men, zero baronies captured 36% contribution score
Queen Clara of Frisia (me) contribution: 70k men, 20 baronies captured 3% contribution score (delivered around 60% of actual warscore)
Emperor of Brittania contribution: 80k men, 4 baronies captured 10% contribution score
Pope: 20k men, 1 barony captured
2 random dukes: no troops send, nothing captured both higher contribution score than the Emperor of Brittania

so essentially the pope gave the victory to someone who barely did anything though two of Christendom most powerfull monarchs send thousands to die in his war. I'm actually thinking of reloading as Brittania to see if they also have free investiture so I can give them an antipope as well.


so anyone else have had a great roleplay reason to create an anti-pope?

also a good reason, I actually didn't need an anti-pope as excommunication shield, I had enough money for that.

I usually set up an antipope when the pope starts to excommunicate me every couple of years just because some lowly count asks him to. The bastard obviously brought that on himself.

About the crusading: What matters the most in terms of contribution is the amount of your men that you sacrifice. The more of your men die the better ^^.
If all the enemy armies have been killed sieging a dozen counties won't help much.

wait your losses actually impact the crusade results?

explains why I won that one crusade in 1.07 as Duke of Brittany despite losing almost my entire army. and why Brittania and me got nothing in this crusade. Since I was keeping my 40k retinue as a home guard.

If you want an invasion cb or the moral authority drops too much.

Or you want someone outside your realm excommunicated.

To restore religious authority, I suppose. If anti-popes are used too long the it'll fall dramatically.

I have noticed for crusades that you get contribution points mostly for losing men in the effort. You do get points for capturing things and points over time in the area, but you get the most for actually losing men to the heathens and wiping out enemies.

I'd think if you have a character who isn't particularly pious and ambitious, having your own pet pope would be enough reason to make one. My Kings have used our line of anti-popes through three rulers to stay rich and keep our vassals in line by the judicious use of excommunication and the axe. It's good times. Although I'm having heresies pop up everywhere now. Im going to have to instal my pope in the Papacy the next time the HRE has an internal crisis. Then after moral authority goes back up, I'll make another loyal pet pope.

thats what late-game usually turns into for me. I really need something new to do, nowadays I always find myself ending up in either Iberia or the Mediterranean.

When I'm emperor and get excommunicated, I go all "Popes can be deposed!". In particular, when I had, via shenanigens, become Byzantine Emperor as a german duke and had converted the entire empire to Catholicism, then got excommunicated a generation or two later.

I just now installed my first Antipope after I was excommunicated. I just looked for the bishop with the highest opinion of me and made him the Antipope. I was getting excommunication messages left and right as soon as he got installed. I check his stats and I couldn't stop laughing. He had 0(2) Learning. The 2 is from his wife. He was a hedonist also. It was so hilarious I couldn't stop laughing.

Something I've actually had fun doing: Using Ruler Designer to make a Catholic Andalusian for Dhunnunid Emirate, and form the Kingdom of Andalusia; surprisingly fun and super challenging.
