As we are all aware you can sometimes end up with some extremely unrealistic numbers of Battleships and Dreadnoughts toward the end.

It has been suggested increasing initial cost and/ or maintenance would help but how about increasing the cost of resources.

Now in 1906 HMS Dreadnought cost £1,785,683 whilst HMS Victory cost £63,176 in 1765.

Paradox cost for a MoW is £5000 if we assume this a good balance then a Viky £ is 10x its historical equivalent. Following this the cost for DN of £25,000 (£250,000) is woefully short of the £1.7 million a DN historically cost.

To bring the cost into line a seven fold cost would seem to be fair, additionally the maintenance cost should be increased by a factor of seven.

This only covers the actual cost. What about the actual resources of Steel and machinery used in its construction? A DN needs 100 Steamers and 10 Telephones. Whilst in comparison an IC needs 20 steamers.

HMS Dreadnought was 18,000 tons whilst HMS Warrior was 9,000 though Iam sure more than 5 times as much stell was used in the construction of HMS Dreadnought than HMS Warrior, so to that end I would look at increasing the amount of Steamers needed though the amount I am not sure of how much. 250 or 700?

Ontop of this I feel it should cost Machine parts to make a BB, CA or DN.

So now we come to the crux of this post. How do I add machine parts as a cost to Naval units?

Oh and do people think my cost/ steamer increases will unbalance gameplay?

Dreadnought cost 1.7 million including steel I think 100 steamers = 100*150=15000 where is a price I picked off the WM after booting up a save in the 1870s I know its too early for a DN but its the closest I have on record. I delete old saves.

This would bring the total cost to £400,000 which is still significantly too low.

So to increases I'd add to the amount of steamers needed but not too much maybe another 100.

I would also include steel costs of around 1100 steel to ensure that no country without domestic steel production would have a hope in hell of building a dreadnought which was fairly historical.

I dunno about the balance here at all.

A guide I would use is if a end game super power can lay down 2 to 3 DNs a year than you have it right. Obviously the AI won't do this so its relying on you the player to do it. Britain and Germany had that kind of production during the naval arms races before WW1.

I haven't found anywhere else in this forum where this question is addressed, so I'm bumping an ancient thread. Has anyone arrived at a good balance to keep fleets to realistic sizes? The UK had a constitutional crisis over the cost of building 20 dreadnoughts, so it's disheartening to see her manage better than 100 in some games.

I'm playing VIP:R 0.2, if that helps with any suggestions.
