Dominion Review #3

    Editorial by the Founder

Dear friends...how we rush head first into these twin perils. It is told to me that war is declared! At this critical juncture when Jackson has been defeated for the Democratic nomination, this President Pettigrew calls forth good young and able men to send across the world. In Mr. Hill’s speech of last week, he rightly calls out this President for creating a crises when one does not exist. All for the sake of Pettigrew’s office and legitimacy. This so called German War for Bulgarian Freedom is sold to us as citizens about that which we care most about. Our freedom. And yet, who are the actors? Germany? A hotbed of socialists no different from their mortal enemies in France. Shall we consider Russia or Austria-Hungary a friend when they too practice in the same form? Let Great Britain play peacemaker there and not us, I say!

An election is less than a month away and it is likely the most important of our lifetimes. If we see the populist cause win once more, how many more of these foreign adventures may we look forward to? With all we hold across the ocean in Africa, how long will it be before we are drawn into more European affairs? It is right and true that we have done well work to colonize and help our more vulnerable men and women in the homeland from which they derive. More to that, these colonies do so much to assist our economy. And yet, at some date I foresee a day in which we are at odds with these European powers. This moment here, my friends...this is a true world war. I cannot sit here to Arlington without raising my fist in the air and shouting “No!” “Stop!” “Cease!”

I need not tell you of my history and knowledge of what war could mean to this country. It is good that it is so terrible for we may grow too fond of it. It granted us our freedom and we were forced to defend that again, but now we choose to enter into a devil’s pact. There are merely days left to you so we might defend our future once more, my friends. This now is war by another name. Vote Hill so we might avoid these unnecessary conflicts. Vote Hill to stop these populists from gaining any further ground. Vote Hill to see anarchy defeated both here and to our north. Vote Hill to maintain our hard fought freedom here and not some place that so few of us will ever see. In short, my friends, vote Hill to see your future secured. Anything else is grievous suicide for my country and yours. This I give to you as promise.

    Primera Edición | Octubre 1889
Once More, the Great Powers of Europe have returned to the Field of Battle. Once More, the Brave Men of our Continent must take arms to protect their Home and Family. Once More, God has called upon Us to take part in a Crusade against the Infidel, to Liberate our fellow Man. The Leader of the Non-Believers, He who calls Himself the Sultan, has Oppressed those Good People living South of the Danube, Los Búlgaros, for Far too Long. They have Risen Up in Resentment against the Barbaric practices of the Turk, Denouncing his False god and Praising the Name of Our Lord. The Christian World has responded to their Cries and has too Risen, Risen to Face the Infidel and Protect the Children of God from their Wrath. Be they Anglés, Castellá or Alemany; all of Europe are Lambs for whom God is thy Shepard, and God has Spoken, and it is Known, that the Will of God be that His Children shall protect Our Christian Community from the Danger of the Infidel.

The Crusades are Fused into the Blood of Our King. It was the Ancestors of Our King who rescued the Holy Land from the Moslem Caliph, who Answered the Call of Urban II, and Rode to the Birth Place of the Christian People. It was the Ancestors of Our King who purged the Moslems from Our Very Homes, from the Iberian Peninsula upon which we Reside, who Led the Glorious Reconquista. It is the History of Our Kingdoms, of Our Monarch, of Our Peoples, to Spread the Word of God to all those that Can Hear It. To Spread the Word of God by Oratory if it is Possible, by the Blessing of Lands, by the Building of Churches; but We are Not to Shy Away from the Tasks that Our Lord places in Front of Us, and so we shall Spread the Word of God by Fire and Sword if that be Necessary, and we will do so Knowing that such is the Will of God.

Even though Most of Us - we Catalans, Francés, Espanyols - most of Us are Good God Fearing Men, But even amongst We, the most Devout of Christian Communities, there still Exists Heresy. Many of Our Fellows in Espanya are guilty of Great Sin. They continue to Claim that the False Isabel is La Reina de España despite the Rightful Succession of Our King, Carlos VII & XI, to the Throne of the Regne d'Espanya following the Abdication of His Father, Juan III. The Good People of Espanya know that that Carlos VII is the One True King by the Grace of God, And it is Merely the Cruel Violence of the False Isabel which has Silenced their Voices. Despite the Fear which she has Oppressed them with, the Godly Espanyols have heard of the Plight of their Búlgar fellows, and Now they March to their Rescue.

The Alemany will March as Well, be they Children of Emperor Franz Joseph I or Kaiser Wilhelm II. Here the Power of God is Remarkable. It was not Two Years ago that Christian fought Christian, that Alemany fought Alemany, that Brother fought Brother; at the Behest of Our Lord Those that Once Fought against Each Other will Now March Shoulder to Shoulder, United in their Faith. They are an Example for All of Mankind. An Example of How A Good Christian Man might Live. How One Might Live in the Defence of Our Faith. They carry with them the Souls of the Saints who Marched before them, those who Carried the Sword of Christ into the Hearts of the Moslem in the Earlier Crusades. This Conflict is the Crusade of the Modern Day, and All Those who Fight and Die in the Defence of the Faith shall become Saints and be Raised into Heaven, and they shall emerge Victorious for they Fight with the Power of the Almighty God.

This Crusade presents an Opportunity to those who remain UnEnlightened in the Ways of Our Lord. An Opportunity who have ever become Wayward in the Faithfulness. An Opportunity for every Boy to become a Man with the Blessing of God. Those who have Struggled to find Work, who have Lacked the Faith and the Ability to Toil God's Soil, who are not Employed to Reap the Harvest Bestowed upon us by Heaven, should look upon this Opportunity, and seize upon it. Those, who in the trappings of Decadence have fallen to Material Greed, who have Sinned against Natural Law, who Entertained the Psuedo-Intellectual Rejection of God, should Seek Now to Take Up Arms. This is Their Chance at Redemption. The Chance for Redemption of Your Brother, Your Son, Your Self. For in Following in the Steps of those who have Crusaded before You, You shall be Forgiven of Your Sins, and come the Day of Judgement, You will Not be Found Wanting. This is the Example Set by Our Christian Brothers.

It is of No Coincidence Nor Surprise that the Heretical Pierre of France has Chosen to Betray the Will of God. That Devil who Goes by the Name Tirard has Elected to Become Involved in the Coming Crusade, But Not on the Side of God. He has Shown the True Colour of His Coat, there can be no Doubt of the his Nature. The Ministers who have Illegally seized control of França have Forsaken God and Submitted themselves to the Infidel. They are a Vessel of Lucifer, given in to His Temptations, and he has Ordered that they Oppose the Liberation of their Christian Brothers, the Búlgars. Instead they Whip the Innocent Francesos into Conscription for the Devil's Cause, they shall be Forced to Serve under the Infidel Sultan, to Fight against the Alemanys and Espanyols.

This Author suggests that those of the Audience who might be more Tepid of Stomach, or who belong to the Fairer Portion of Society, should Avert their Gaze from That of Which I shall Next Write. It would do great Damage to thine Eyes and Curdle within thy very Soul. Carry Forth and Understand the Truth of what this Author Speaks at a Risk that is Thy Own. That Same Devil which Doth possess the Heretic Tirard to Deny that Which has been Granted to Carlos VII & XI by the Grace of God, Namely Dominion over El Poble de França; that Very Same Devil hath also Moved Tirard to Engage in the Acts which Damned Sodom, it hath moved Him to Engage in these Acts with those other Ministers of His Government. It Has even been Suggested that the Heretic Tirard, in part of the Devil's Temptations, has so made it that the Infidel Sultan has been Degraded from his Sinful and Barbaric practice of Polygamy, to that Cardinal Sin of Amusement between just themselves. Such is the Corruption of Tirard's Heresy, that it is Capable of bringing Even the Infidel into Greater Sin. There Can be No Doubt, that the Return of a Crusade such as that against the Albigensians is Necessary, to Purge the Sin from the Flesh of the People.

The First Step towards the Return of Faith and Sanctity to the Lands of Carlos VII & XI has begun. Christians, not only from the Continent, but even the far off América, have answered the Call to Crusade against the Turkish Infidel. The Power of God, actualised in the Fire and Steel of the Armies of the Continent, shall grant a Great Victory, and Free the Búlgars from the Oppression of the Infidel. Then, having Spread the Word of God into the Land of the Turks, and brought them into the Light, the Eyes of God can turn once more to the very Heart of the Continent. They can turn to França, where the Unspeakable Acts committed by the Heretic Ministry have begun to Corrupt the Fine People of His Majesty's Nation. Then, having Scoured the Devil from the Continent it shall be the turn of the False Isabel. God shall Eject the Pretender from Her Phoney Throne, and by the Grace of God, the Benevolent Rule of His Majesty Carlos VII & XI shall be Returned to the People of Espanya.

((The Tiny Little Independent Catalonia is an absolute monarchy, so I figured they might as well be ruled by Carlos VII of Spain & XI of France, the Carlist and Legitimiste claimant respectively. Obviously the views expressed in this newspaper are not my own, instead that of a very traditionalist Catholic monarchist...))

A message from our Illustrious Editor, Mr E. Bear

Today’s featured article comes from a quite brilliant gentleman who lives opposite where he works, a dream we can all aspire to. I have not read his missive personally, given the timely arrival of a rather large and excellent pot of honey at the exact moment I was due to edit that day. However, I doubt any man who loves elevenses as much as Mr Mycroft Holmes can possibly lead our little paper astray, so I have the highest possibly faith that you shall enjoy his message to you all.

Is there anything more loathsome to the civilised individual than getting up in the morning? Being hurled from a wonderful land of slumber upon a sumptuous mattress is one thing, but it is in aid of that most repulsive of tasks as a day’s work. Truly the morning routine is an escalation in dread as one leaves the bedroom entirely, descends the stairs, rescind because you have forgotten to dress, descended again to a frigid ground floor where the horror of servants, spouses or (GOD help you!) children doth dwell. The street may seem like an escape from such bedlam but alas, the road offers little respite. Your fellow man is a pig and an ass, and all the worse in the morning for having gone through the same horror as your good self.

The final circle of hell is breached upon arrival at the office, shutting out the clerk and taking a deep breath before the worst trial of all. The morning papers, that most disgusting and puerile collection of what some madman calls literature, informing you that yes, indeed, the world continues to spiral into ever decreasing depravity from the golden times of when you were around five years old.

This very paper offers to be a balm to the afflicted, and by GOD, looking at the dredge of news dockets these days, it is a long time in coming. I hate these glory hound gutter presses delighting in the oncoming slaughter of thousands of no doubt decent yet repulsive common soldiers. I despise these ridiculous socialists who demand whatever poor unfortunate nation should come together in these troubled times, eat their own rich and then, unsated, frenziedly attack their neighbours as well. I abhor these objectors to war, having nothing to counter it with but the dried hopes of millions. And as for the Americans… LORD, those Americans.

Our country indeed appears at times circling the drain, when it is not down and out completely. However, it must be noted that we have, somehow, managed to avoid the catastrophic mistake of being the rest of the world. There is certainly no trouble in our fiscal markets, though plenty in the restaurants of London, who have yet to adequately supply a gourmet enough wine in the evening. However, this recent news of our involvement in a ridiculous little war in the Balkans somewhere can only lead to trouble. We should be concerned with far greater things like who on earth approved the closing of Regent Street for that new construction monstrosity, or what tricks the FRENCH are up to (this war is nothing but a smokescreen, mark my words).

Alas, it appears my page is running short, and I have not yet got to the crux of the issue regarding annoying family members and bumbling sidekicks. Well! At least this paper serves a modicum of hope to those who are into such things. Myself, I much prefer to be unsociably miserable and depressive at all times. But by all means, say tickety-boo to that. I hate you all anyway.

We have reached January 1890 and that seemed as good a point as any to stop for this session. We bring in the new year with war! Lots and lots of war.

Oct 22nd - The Eastern Question and the Role of Russia. Ottomans are generally agreed to be "The Sick Man of Europe" and Russia declares itself the Defender of Eastern Christendom. The Great Powers try to get Russia to renounce the title, but Russia refuses them all.

Nov 1st - Netherlands declare war on Atjeh (colonial annexation war)

In the Crisis War the French push into Germany, Germany drives into Belgium (force of habit perhaps) while the British descend upon North France. A Russian Fleet bobs about in the Channel sinking the French while the Royal Navy is busy shuttling troops into France. The Belgian fleet gets massacred by the Germans in the Battle of Heligoland Bight.

Nov 21st - Spain declares war on Algeria (colonial annexation war)

Dec 1st - Communist Revolution in Haiti

In the Crisis War Austro-Hungary is tearing through Bosnia and the Russians have crossed the Caucus mountains in force and are occupying Eastern Anatolia. The Ottomans are ignoring all of that and instead attacking the undefended A/H Lebanese colony.

The CSA are focusing on West Africa (so gave them relevant war goals to annex bits of colonial France) and trying to avoid the massive French armies there. Japan is not doing much at all.

Belgium is doing more to defend North France than French. Because the French are still charging into Germany and doing well, having wiped out much of the German standing army. Germany is forced to mobilise (why they hadn't early is a mystery for the ages) and manage to stabilise the line somewhat.

Dec 14th - Venice annexed Modena

Dec 20th - The Papal States declared war on Egypt to reclaim Jerusalem. (The Papal States got the Righteous Religious Fury election event and had just finished justifying for war on Egypt, so it had to be done. Perhaps amusingly the government of the Papal States are currently secular liberals). The war is the Papal States and Two Sicilies vs Belgium, Egypt, Persia and some Arabian minors.

  • Interesting choice to put the ads on the first page - 19th century ads are quite interesting to glance over if you can.

TBH it was just an attempt at setting at atmosphere - a few liberally sprinkled Victorian advertisements seemed like an easy way to do it!

I like that the paper clearly shows the bias pretty much straight away. The French Republic, the Ottoman Empire....and Belgium and Japan.

    - and quite deliberately. This is a paper that is shrill in its observations.

(wow, I didn't think Lebanon could become any more of a mess than it was, but apparently I was mistaken)

Citizen-Subjects of the Duchy of Greater Lebanon:

We are embarked on a patriotic War such as our nation has never before seen. The attempts of the French, Belgian and Ottoman governments to control the complete totality of the Mediterranean must be resisted with all the strength in our sinews and all the energies of our minds. So, too, must we resist the power of the Japanese to control the seas of Asia and free the Christians unjustly chained by the Turk in Bulgaria, and ensure that all nations may yet in future go forth in peace and harmony. We thank our Russian, British, German and Confederate allies, and with God’s help will proceed to victory in the greatest cause our lifetimes have ever seen. Already our mighty armies are winning great victories in Bosnia and Anatolia, the very heartlands of the Turk, as our German and British friends are swooping like great eagles onto the rat of France. We must not tremble or quaver, for our cause is righteous and our victory certain.

    In the name of our Lord and of His Imperial and Royal Apostolic Majesty Franz Joseph I, by the Grace of God Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary and Bohemia, Dalmatia, Croatia, Slavonia, Galicia, Lodomeria and Illyria;
    King of Jerusalem, etc.;

    Grand Voivode of the Voivodeship of Serbia;
    etc. etc.

    This day 5 December 1889.

    Citizens of Lebanon,

In the name of Caliph Abdul Hamid ibn Abdulmecid,

    Amir al-Mu’minin,

    Sultan of the Ottoman Empire,

    Kayser-i Rum,

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques,

We come as friends and brothers.

Since the Russians unjustly seized the lands of the Mountain, tearing families apart and causing great devastation, the land has suffered. The Commander of the Faithful has long weeped at this, but now is a time of joy. What has been sundered is now whole, and now is a time for joyful smiles and gatherings. But we must remain ever vigilant. Though we are strong and will emerge from this conflict of conflicts, struggle of struggles, victorious, our enemies menace us at every corner. Many among you have conspired with the Russian and Austrian oppressors, and there will be due justice meted out to those that have betrayed the most rightly-guided authority on Earth, with malice and evil in their hearts, but there will be clemency for most, because our Caliph is a most merciful man who wishes no bloodshed and enmity on the people so tired and beaten by the foreign yoke. With joy in our hearts, we shall fight alongside our Japanese, French, and Belgian brothers and proceed to victory.

    This day 5 January 1890.

    Speculator's Forecast
If war is a time for the cautious investor to rush for the safety of the the gilt-edged security, then it is also the time for the honest speculator to gird himself and seek out opportunity. Much of the usual ‘military rally’ has already occurred and while prices for ammunition, artillery and war like supplies of all nature can be expected to remain healthy, this rally has already been priced into the market and we see little value there. Instead the speculator is advised to consider the naval war, with the French and Belgian fleets essentially sunk the Royal Navy has begun to blockade their ports which will soon have dire consequences on their trade. France had a strong position in the textile industry, commanding a quarter of the world market for Fabric and sixth for clothes, Belgium is of course famous for it's beer and both nations had competitive glass industries. As always the commodities market remains the most lucrative, and potentially hazardous, venue to speculate and large movements in the price of those goods could be expected as markets adjust. A wiser speculator may look at investing in the competition, Amalgamated Imperial Textiles, Pilkington Brothers Englazement and Bass Brewery Ltd could all be expected to profit from their rivals being unable to get their goods to market.

Finally, for those who find the depressed yield on Gilts unattractive but prefer to stay in the relative safety of government securities, we see good value in Confederate Bonds, the so called Cottonbacks, as it appears the United States will not be joining the conflict and we understand that President Pettigrew has announced that mobilisation will not be required. Both of these bode well for the Confederate economy, as does the prospect of colonial expansion in the Dark Continent should she succeed in her war aims.

I got a tad distracted by the ongoing wars and we ended up in November 1890. Basically lots of battles and wars. As no-one (at the moment) is doing war correspondence, I do wonder if the run up to the crisis might be a better setting than the actual war? Rush through this war and get back to peace time tensions perhaps. Thoughts?

Jan 6th - Siam landed in Pondicherry in Dutch Madras. I just find that an amusing concept.

Late Jan - The UK Mobilised.

Mid-Feb - An absolute massacre for France in the Battle of Paris. The city would fall on 5th March

23rd Feb - Mysore embraced Westernisation and became Civilised! (Just to break up the war)

25th Feb - The US (which is not in the war) discovers Great Wars. Sp naturally the Bulgarian Crisis War becomes The Great War

    Early March
Massive Piedmont nationalist revolt in Switzerland. It will be put down by the Autumn

Early April - Russia added 'Acquire Kars' war goal

    May
Some particularly large border battles around Alsace-Lorraine and the Rhine. This will continue until the end.

Germany adds reclaiming Alsace-Lorraine as a War Goal

    June
A/H reach Greek border and the Med and Russians invade modern Romania. Ottomans ignore this, and the Papal Crusade for Jerusalem, as they are fighting the Russians in the Caucasus mountains.

July - German School of Women's Rights (Bit of variety)

October - Large Red Guard revolt in the Two Sicilies

Autumn -Last Belgian field army defeated. Whole of Belgium occupied or will be soon. In France, the British have invaded from the South and the large French army in Alsace-Lorraine has been crushed.

The French alliance have basically lost but will probably fight on till they hit -100% war score. And if they don't I will intervene and force the issue.

EDIT: Just realised I forgot to record any election results. I know you can work it out by comparing the saves but I probably should have tried to be more helpful, sorry about that.

    Whither New Zealand?
Unquestionably many incurious investors found the sight of a British Dominion going bankrupt to be a shock. Yet when one studies the particulars of the New Zealand economy the shock is not that the event occurred, but that it did not occur sooner. For those who have not kept up their Antipodean studies we beg to report that the conditions currently prevailing in New Zealand are far from hospitable to growth and a strong economy. The nation lacks anything resembling a modern factory and even the Directors of Amalgamated Kiwi Railways would concede the rail infrastructure is at best out-dated. Those clerks and craftsmen who would, in other Dominions, be working productively in mill and workshop are instead condemned to penury due to lack of opportunity, it is a land of more clergy than capitalists and more government functionaries than artisans.

Looking to the future it is far from clear what future path the Dominion should attempt to chart, we posit that a fundamental question must be answered; can a modern and civilised economy be maintained purely on beef and lamb? When a large refrigerated cargo ship arrives in Southampton laden with frozen meat it is tempting to say perhaps it can, yet those mighty ships are built, owned and run from Britain, New Zealand itself contributes nothing to the chain of value beyond raising the livestock. With little evidence of any gross policy error by the government, and the stark fact of bankruptcy, we are minded to argue that more than mere animal husbandry is required to maintain sufficient economic activity for a civilised standard of living.

Having drawn this conclusion we must face the next question with clear eyes. At the time of it's founding there was discussion on whether New Zealand should be included as a federated state within the Commonwealth of Australia, after much debate this was rejected and the two nations went their own ways. In light of the promising commercial prospects and industrial projects underway in Australia and the ominous news that the New Zealand government's deficit is rising rapidly, is it not possible that this was decided incorrectly? We encourage those in government circles to ascertain if the time is now ripe for a Trans-Tasman Sea Pacific Dominion to be reconsidered.

    Sixth Update and History
  • We have reached December 1890, less than a week before Christmas and the world teeters on the brink of... Peace?

The Franco-Belgo-Otto-Japanese Alliance is at -100% war score so their will be peace. But the various demands of the victors far exceed this, and doubtless there are other demands not yet listed, so what is to be done? (For starters you should ignore the game mechanic limits, for I have no truck with such false limits from Paradox ;) ).

Some have suggested Berlin or London for a conference, to settle affairs, others neutral Venice might be a better venue. Yet there are rumours the Germans wish to sign a Treaty in Strasbourg, just to hammer home the point about Alsace-Lorraine. The talks to decide where the talks will be held could be the first diplomatic fight.

    Lots of war. Obviously.

Nov 20th - Bhutan broke their treaty with Sikkim! (One for the Himalayan Gazette perhaps?)

Early December - The Royal Navy develops large calibre guns and quick firing guns, further cementing British naval dominance.

Mid December - The Austro-Hungarian Army reaches Constantinople and starts besieging the city. They also decide to add "Contain Japan" as a war goal. These events may or may not be connected.

The CSA has an election 10th January 1891 and went for "Why should they have the same rights?" in the immigration debate, but also the pro-Secularisation one. They have also grabbed a chunk of West Africa and would like the rest in the peace conference.

A/H election is April 1891 for those interested in a possible peace conference point there. No other major power has an election any time soon (or in the case of Russia, Ottomans, etc - no elections ever).

Mid December - The Papal States not-a-Crusade reaches Jerusalem and begins occupying it. Deus Vult!

Late December - The French White Army (reactionary monarchist) rebels started to spawn. The actual French army was too busy fighting British and Germans armies, or being dead, to do much about it.

An apology from our Illustrious Editor, Mr E. Bear

Today’s featured article was meant to be released some time ago, a delay I must humbly beg apology for. Alas, recent calamity has rocked the publishing world to its core, as you might have noticed by the lack of paper on your breakfast tables these past few weeks. Breakfast of course was also the lesser because of the Great Honey Shortage (GHS), made all the worse by collapse in farming markets across the world in New Zealand and utter apathy on the part of bees everywhere.

It has been an Ordeal of the Highest Order, let me tell you. But…is that not what we are for, here at Tickety-Boo? Indeed, should we not take strength and power from this misery, leaning on our banner until we have the capability, nay, the wherewithal, to raise it once again and demand, “No-more Sir! Elevenses for all, not teatime!”

Anywho, Mr Holmes has been ever so obliging to promise unto us a further demonstration of his literary prowess and great humanity on the upcoming peace conference. However, today’s feature article is something of a mystery. It appeared alongside a pot of most unusual Honey from the Dark Continent, so I am sure the author is of similarly unusual but excellent taste and character. Do enjoy it.

    …

It was a surprise and, may I say, delight to be…presented with this new paper tasked with the upliftment of Mankind. At my age, melancholy is a habit rather than a hindrance yet I do not dislike the temporary despoilment of ancient misery such a thing provides. I am not young, and time does not heal all things. It must be said, however, that Mr Edward Bear stoked a fire within my chest that has not yet proven fleeting. It has certainly made me consider my living arrangements if nothing else.

We are, all of us, entombed within the walls of our homes more often than not. Where we sleep, where we…reside, where we feast and hunger, where we plan and concoct, these places of ours are not mere residences but a part of our very being. No man with a song in his heart and a spring in his step returns home every day to a joyless abode or darkened hall. Dilapidated it might be, but love and warmth will coat its walls in a manner paint or blood never could. Similarly, a ruined fellow, who has taken the world upon his shoulders and been crushed by the weight, who walks bow legged and bent backed, might live in the mightiest of castles yet his hearth is cold and his possessions, though potentially ample, will be dim with dust and rust.

My homeland tis of me, any sweetness upon its wind spent over centuries of terrible war and tragedy. My ancestral place, a ruin of a castle, a mockery of a family seat, where never again shall a child laugh in delight nor a maiden swoon in genuine romance. Such is the way of things. The past may be a foreign country, but it encroaches like any imperialist upon that which it should by rights lay out of. Nothing is sacred these days.

I have decided to make a change, to remove myself from such entropy and re-join with society in another place. To live again, amongst the living of the modern age. Such a thing for me is fraught with difficulty, liturgical, logistical and…otherwise. To that end, very soon a fine Englishman will be arriving at my sorry dwelling. I hope he is not infected with its demeanour, but in all honesty this place hungers for more things than I care to mention.

Forgive me, a person of my unique condition slips often into rhapsody and unforgivable bouts of depression. As I was saying, each of us contains a part of ourselves within our homes and takes part of our homes away with us. So, what is to be done? Well, you must make your place fit for your purposes I suppose. For those whom require air, light, a connection to nature – all such things can be provided with a large window. Preferably unlatched. The more studious, independent, dare I say…lonesome types, they would presumably prefer a wall to wall, floor to ceiling library, shuttered windows, limited light sources, that sort of thing.

What I am getting at, distracted as I am with thoughts of dinner (never write hungry, my new friends) is that each of us is less in control of our moods than we might like to think. Our surroundings make us as much as we, human and animal alike, make our surroundings. The streets of London, as filled with delight and fancy as they are, also hide many monsters of your own making. How dark do those winding streets go? How loudly must you scream to pierce the thick fog and cries of machinery? How can any man feel healthy and full-blooded in a place that saps vigour and life like…well, regardless-

Perhaps the City is…not the best place for a person as of today. Still, I must see for myself and rest assured, dear readers, I shall report back to you on my findings. Should anyone wish to enquire upon my good self, I am sure I shall make myself known in your fair kingdom upon my arrival. For now, goodnight, and sleep well.

    NUMÉRO 3 — DEC 1890

What terrible ruin the Capitalist War has wrought! Half of France aches under the occupation of foreign powers; hundreds of thousands of our sons and daughters lie dead, and those who survive carry the grave burden of unspeakable loss. From a petty dispute cynically manipulated by the false Socialists in Berlin – feigning concern for the plight of the Bulgarian people while in truth concerned only for the expansion of German influence – the War spiralled into a conflict whose like this dark Continent has not known for generations. France’s defeat is total. Her lands lie ravaged by invading armies and her people left forsaken by a spineless bourgeois Liberal government. The fields go empty and the villages stand silent, mourning the dead. Meanwhile, the capitalist profiteers build their fortunes from the sales of armaments and the opening up of new markets. After all, war is good business.

As if this tragedy were not already sufficiently profound, opportunists seeking to exploit the weakness of the enfeebled Liberal Party seek to condemn the Republic in its entirety. It is true, the Third Republic has been no friend of the worker; the cry of those in power has been, Enrich yourselves! Yet who would conclude from this sorry state of affairs that the only way is backwards? Sixteen thousand men, a shameful coalition of aristocrats and class traitors, now seek to take advantage of the parlous state of the French Army and declare an end to the Republic and the restoration of the French monarchy! How low must one stoop before choosing to make good of war by returning the shackles to a liberated people. Having set ourselves against German aggression, foolishly embroiling the people of France in a conflict with which they had nothing to do, our former oppressors now demand a return of their privileges! The democratic tradition has been found wanting, they cry! A return to the Crown and the Church is the only way that France may be free of this cycle of revolution, reaction and ruin!

Do not swallow these poisoned words! The salvation of the worker does not lie in any external movement, but within the working class itself! No god nor king will save us from the tyranny of the Capitalists and the bourgeoisie! If there is to be an end to this sordid Republic, let it come at the hands of the workers, empowered by the force of their own position in history! The White Army must be defeated; they number barely fifteen thousand men, while the ranks of the Communists within France exceed half a million! Our capacity for action, if we are conscious of it, knows no bounds! We have a world to win! Take up arms now in defence of the rights and the freedoms of the working classes! Take up arms in opposition to the Capitalist, the Aristocrat and the Bourgeois politicians who treat the fate of the French people as a merely a petty entertainment! Take up arms in defiance of the false concerns for freedom parroted by the so-called Socialists in Germany and Britain, whose malicious manipulation of the state machinery to oppress the working peoples of Europe stands in direct contradiction to all those values they claim to hold dear! Together we can bring about the downfall of the state that oppresses us and begin the construction of a new world for the good of all working peoples of the world!

To all who read these words, do not delay! Act today in defence of this golden dream: the creation of a happy abode of free humankind! True liberty is but one short battle away: join the fight for an end to the chaos and the slaughter that sends millions of workers to their deaths so that the ruling classes may grow fat and rich! Awaken all who have been lying in wait for this auspicious day: the hour of liberty is upon us! Do not rest until the old world lies dead in its grave; we shall not mourn it, for we shall inherit a new world of radical freedom! Though the fight may seem daunting, together our power shall know no equal; we are many, they are few! Forward, to our new tomorrow! Through revolution we workers shall set ourselves free!

    LE TEMPS

… While it is understood that the victorious Allies would rather hold peace talks in either Berlin or London, there has been a push among the defeated coalition to convene in a neutral location such as Venice. The foreign secretary indicated today that the French government has resolved to push for Geneva as a potential compromise, noting that the city retains close ties to the Allied Powers via the friendship between the Swiss and Austro–Hungarian governments, while avoiding the likely occurrence of a diplomatic incident should talks take place in non-neutral territory.

The desire of the nationalist bloc within Germany to hold talks in Strasbourg, a statement of German aspirations to control the regions of Alsace and Lorraine, has been dismissed out of hands. …

The value of unvarnished truth outshines even the finest diamond

    Eastern Practices
As the fever of socialism continues to grip the major powers we at the Imperial Financial Journal have been trenchant in our defence of markets, capitalism and the benefits of trade and specialisation. However intellectual honesty, and our journalistic integrity, requires that we are just as determined in our opposition to bad policies that emanate from the other end of the political spectrum, to that end we must draw our readers attention to the ongoing problems in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth where the notionally conservative National Democratic Party is in office.

The Second Agricultural Bank of Poland is not an institution that is counted among the great finance houses of Europe, yet by it's own lights it was a respectable enough institution. Prudently managed and with ample reserves it had navigated the recent turbulence rocking the continent and continued to pay a modest dividend while providing the loans and advances that are the lifeblood of commerce. Despite this spotless, if unexceptional record, the bank was nationalised by the Commonwealth government, in a naked act of expropriated the capital of the shareholders and bondholders was confiscated without compensation and the entire enterprise placed under the wing of the Finance Ministry.

It is suggested by our correspondents in the region that this event was driven by internal political concerns around in the Eastern regions around Kiev, that the bank had become improperly involved in the financing of the many ‘liberation’ movements that plague the Commonwealth. Be that as it may, and we note the lack of actual proof around these admittedly serious allegations, that is no excuse or justification for this act of state sponsored theft. Far more significantly we observe that the NDP subscribe to the twisted doctrine of State-Capitalism and this act of larceny would fit within the confines of that barbarous policy.

While we sympathise with the dire straits that the Commonwealth finds itself in, the Imperial Trade Board for the region estimates there may be no more than 50 actual capitalists in a country of some 23 millions, that should be a spur for reform not ill thought out revolution. An end to the pernicious ‘progressive’ taxation that assails the country is what is called for, along with encouragement for more of the nations' aristocracy to follow the example of their historic British counterparts and become patrons of industry not gentlemen farmers. Instead the Commonwealth seems determined to plumb the depths of their faulty doctrine; we understand a rash of clothing manufactories are under construction, all funded by the state in the absence of any meaningful private capital. As an observant investor should know garment prices has been in secular decline for many years due to chronic global over-capacity, with little prospect of any change due to lavish state subsidy from governments which should know better. While the Commonwealth possess some land suitable for cotton production in it's African colonies it lacks any textile mills, thus it has to import raw fabric for processing further squeezing the possible margin of profit.

In short, there is no arguable case that the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth has a comparative advantage in this industry and the long term prospects are for further decline in prices until even the most stoneheaded of politicians is forced to admit they cannot fight the market and turn off the subsidy taps. Yet in the name of State-Capitalism it is into this industry that the Commonwealth government is pouring it's nation's capital! We can only advise our readers to ensure they resist the tempting yield offered by the bonds of the region's banks and financial firms, lest further piracy occur, continue to steer clear of all clothing manufacturing enterprises and look for opportunities elsewhere until such time as sanity and the wisdom of our namesake returns to the region.

    Peace Conference - Opening Proposals
  • The two sides have agreed for the conference to be held in Geneva. Such has been the scale of the conflict and the stakes involved that many lesser powers, satellites and puppets have sent representatives, thought what weight (if any) will be given to their input is another matter. The attending powers have put together their initial proposals for the peace, but not yet co-ordinated them and it is unclear which are non-negotiable, which are aspirations and which, if any, are just negotiation bluster to be sacrificed during the talks.

Alas these confidential notes have somehow leaked to the press...

    France
    • Alsace-Lorraine to be de-militarised and placed under joint Franco-German administration for give years, with a plebiscite on it's final fate at the end of that period.
    • Given the complexity of the haphazard and unplanned colonial boundaries in Africa, a congress to be held to regulate and organise the boundaries. It being understood that the regularisation of the colonies may require the transfer of territory from Entente to Allied control.
    • The Allied Armies to assist in the suppression of the illegal, so-called, "White Army" rebels prior to departing French territory
    Ottoman Empire
    • Bulgaria to be released as a satellite state of the Ottoman Empire
    • The Bosnian vilayet to be transferred to the Austro-Hungarian Empire
    Japan
    • No reparations of any kind to be imposed on Japan
    • Japanese mastery over East Asia to be acknowledged
    Belgium
    • No restrictions to be imposed on Belgium until such time as the War of the Palestine Concession is concluded
    • That conflict to be recognised as independent and all contracting powers not already involved to commit to non-interference in the conflict or it's resolution

    Germany
    • Alsace-Lorraine to be returned to it's rightful owner and it's correct name - Elsass-Lothringen
    • Bulgaria to be given it's independence under the protections of Germany
    • Ottoman Libya to be transferred to German control and Germany acknowledged as a Mediterranean Power in addition to her current privileges and positions.
    United Kingdom
    • Cyprus to be transferred to British control
    • The Japanese Indian Ocean Territories to be transferred to British control
    • Saint Pierre and Miquelon, being untidy aberrations, will be transferred to British North America from French control.
    • The Ottoman Empire to return to Greece her rightful territories in Macedonia and the Aegean, with Albania to be released as a satellite of the Greek state.
    Austria-Hungary
    • Japan's recent infamous acts to be acknowledged and contained, in addition to her reparations for the War.
    • Bosnia, Montenegro, Serbia and Albania to be liberated from the Ottomans and returned to the rightful control of Austria-Hungary
    • Moldova, being acknowledged as in the Austro-Hungarian sphere of influence, shall cease being a satellite of the Ottomans and fall under the protection of Austria-Hungary
    Russia
    • The Kars regions, including all fortifications and passes through the lesser Caucasus mountains, to be transferred from the Ottomans to rightful Russian control
    • Japan's recent infamous acts to be acknowledged and contained, in addition to her reparations for the War.
    • The Dobrudja region to be transferred to Russian control
    Confederate States of America
    • Mali and East Guinea to be transferred from French control to Confederate Africa
    • Comoros island to be transferred to CSA control and the Confederacy to be an Indian Ocean and East African power for the purposes of any future congress, in addition to her current privileges and positions.

Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth - has expressed a keen interest in a future African congress, doubtless because her current colonies are entirely land locked.

Greece - Naturally fully supports the British proposal and has also indicated that the transfer of her African colonies would be an acceptable price to pay.

The Papal States / Two Sicilies - Are very keen that Belgium is held accountable for her part in the Great War, doubtless for entirely altruistic and moral reasons.

Catalonia - Would like to be released from the French sphere.

    EDITION SPÉCIALE—CONGRES DE GENÈVE

Perfidy! The leaked demands to be bargained over by the European powers at the Congress of Geneva reveals the true extent of the greed and ruthlessness endemic to the many states of our sorry Continent. These powers bargain over the spoils of their devastating war. And the currency in their bargaining? The blood of the wounded and the lives of those killed, sacrificed on the altar of military–industrial capital!

In these straitened times, we lack the resources to fully cover the total extent of the demands of the various convening parties. While aristocrats, diplomats and profiteers argue over where to set the borders until the next great conflict requires that they be redrawn once more, our fields are spoiled and our hearths lie cold. Our stomachs are empty and our inkwells exhausted. We barely have enough paper to print one hundred copies of this pamphlet! We therefore humbly submit to our dear readers and comrades, and entreat you to copy and distribute this urgent message by whatever means possible. The word of the workers’ revolution will not be extinguished by the ravages of poverty! It lives on so long as we do.

Nevertheless, we cannot spare any more paper on our own misfortunes. The ills currently being perpetrated against the workers of the world by the fools in Geneva warrant far greater attention!

The various exchanges of money, territory and prestige that accompany the end of any war are, grimly, to be expected. Nevertheless, two clauses stand out as deserving of particular condemnation. The first: the appeal of the French government to the victorious powers, whose armies still occupy our cities and ravage our towns, to prolong their occupation further still, and indeed to legitimate it in the service of defeating the treacherous so-called White Army; the second: the call of the French government for a future conference on the “question of Africa”, so that the lands of the African people may be parcelled up and shared out amongst the capitalist powers for their own enrichment.

In answer to the first demand, we note that our complete opposition to the so-called White Army does not cease. We remain unswervingly dedicated to the fight against the aristocrats and reactionaries who wish to exploit the chaos that engulfs France for their own bleak ends. We reject wholeheartedly the notion that a restoration of the so-called House of France would improve the lot of the international workers living on French soil, and we abhor the nature of monarchs and tyrants of all kinds. The men currently involved in the craven fight for this sorry future deserve nothing but our fullest contempt and condemnation, and we will meet them in the streets to repel their cruel violence!

Yet this being case, we need neither the French government nor the government of any other nation to assist in the fight against these reactionaries. How can we trust those same capitalist soldiers, who only weeks ago shot at us and raped our fields, in the work of ridding our provinces of the monarchist menace? No master but ourselves alone, united in defence of our freedoms and our livelihoods!

The cowardly politicians in Paris reveal their true colours: gratitude for having been invaded, so that their erstwhile enemies may do for them the dirty work of defending their discredited regime! We denounce this treachery as the highest of treasons against the liberty of Frenchmen everywhere!

In answer to the second demand, we declare in the fullest voice our opposition to the notion of European incursion onto the African continent, and we express our total solidarity with the oppressed people of the colonies everywhere. The criminal attempts of the government in Paris to turn this terrible defeat in their favour will not escape the memory of the workers of France! We shall remain vigilant against all instances of capitalist greed and indifference to the fate of those whose lives have been lost or devastated by the recent war.

Finally, we must use what short space we have left to register our disgust at the prospect of illegitimate governments deciding the fate of the people of Alsace-Lorraine, which by inalienable right is their and theirs alone. Resist all false governments! Organise towards the downfall of the capitalist system of oppression! Victory and freedom to all workers in all lands!

How the Tenth Crusade Will Bring About Royal Restoration
At the same moment that this publication reaches the eyes of our Christian readers, the powers that be are involved in discussion regarding what the future of Europe is to be. A great conflict has raged across the continent. Many souls have gone to join our Lord in Heaven, their lives taken in service against the infidel. It is to them that this victory should be awarded, those brave men who marched for their faith, and have succeeding in liberating their búlgar brethren. That is not, and should not, be the end of the reward which God has bestowed upon us. Nay, punishment must be visited upon all those who dared to oppose the Will of the Almighty Creator.

The demonic figures which have captured the people of France deserve to have a mighty punishment wrought upon them. They have committed a great evil in leading our nation astray, in taking us away from the light of God. It is our duty, as His children, to smite them from this Earth, and return them to that fiery domain from which they emerged. However, it doing so, we must also remember the Sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who was given to us in order that all Men might be forgiven of sin, both future and past. Whilst those who have enthralled the minds of France are unGodly creatures, and thus not capable of repentance, those who should rightfully fall under the guidance of His Majesty Carlos VII & XI should not be punished. Rather, they are in need of guidance, they must be saved by the paternal love that can only be granted to them by their Rightful King.

The Crusade against the heretics and infidels has provided for the perfect opportunity for the restoration of Our King to his rightful place as God's representative on Earth for the people of France. Our fellow Crusaders have injured the foul republicans such that some of our fellow francesos have broken free from their corrupting influence and begun waging an internal war in the name of the One True King of França & Espanya. To this end, it is our belief that the gathering of the Crusaders in Geneva, might result in a resolution to support these saintly men in their holy war against the heretics in the heart of Europa. Knowing that they would fight with the power of Allmighty God, it is this Author's belief that there might would bring about the return of the stolen lands of France to their Rightful King, Carlos VII & XI.

((Carlos VII & XI would never think it unreasonable to demand that his monarchy be restored in the now defeated France. In-Game, this might amount to Catalonia annexing all of at least metropolitan France. It would provide the other powers with a sympathetic, yet legitimate, Government in control of a nation which is now ripe for instability. Also, I'm sure Carlos would be very willing to make some concessions in exchange for him being put 'back' on the throne.))

The Civilising Light in Respect to the Savage Africá
It is no secret that the mission to bring the teachings of the Holy Bible to the unenlightened peoples of the Dark Continent has been mislaid by the same corrupting influences of wealth and republicanism which have so harshly impacted the French people. Where once preachers flourished, sent forth by Papal Bull, their forced absence, and the damages of war, have led the lands to regress into moral impoverishment. Thankfully for the faithful Christian, this most recent Crusade, although primarily directed against the treacherous infidels of the Orient might also provide for Catholicisms return to the heart of África.

It has been proposed that the Moslem people of the Barbary Coast who are currently claimed by the defeated infidels of the Orient be granted the gracious patrimony of the good Kaiser Wilhelm II. In freeing these peoples from the clutches of the depraved turcs it is hoped that they might also be freed from their false Mohammadan beliefs. It was not that long ago that the peoples of this area were of the Faith, and it must be so that they know the Truth within their hearts. The Kaiser has succeeded with the sword in one hand, and now he is to be gifted the opportunity to show himself capable with the Bible in the other. The responsibility of restoring Christianity, albeit in its inferior alemany form, to the people's of the Eastern Maghreb is understood to be being gifted to the Kaiser in Geneva.

There still remains the question of the rightful jurisdictions of Carlos VII & XI, who had intended to bring order to the savages prior to the interference of the Devil himself. Ignored by the greedy republicans of Paris, the people who Carlos VII & XI had sought to protect where left to starve, the land brought under his care was left to rot. It is of great fortune that these uneducated innocents have been liberated by the forces of Confederació Amèrica, but now questions must be asked as to the future of their education. It was to His Majesty Carlos VII & XI that the Pope did foster these youthful souls, and though he never erred in his judgement the challenge presented to him, and our nation, by God, has been such that the interests of the africá might not be best served by continuing within His Majesty's jurisdiction, at least while an emphasis must be placed on saving the eternal souls of the French peoples. In his ever gracious capacities, His Majesty has been known to suggest that the liberating crusader, Senyor Pettigrew of Confedaració Amèrica, be granted the authority over the charges in regions near the Rivière Niger and the Rivière Sènègal. This is a truly gracious and charitable offer from His Majesty, and one sure to benefit the Christian education of the Dark Continent.

A message from our Illustrious Editor, Mr E. Bear

The Ordeal of previous weeks has ended, with the relaxing of certain restrictions and trade once more flowing outwards and inwards. That is to say, honey once more flows. It is a wonderous time to be alive. The war, also, has ended in celebration. Our regular readers have been much uplifted in spirit as of late, going by our letters page. I personally am delighted that this little smackerel of a project has brought joy to so many in what has proven to be challenging times. This week, our featured article comes once again from Mr Holmes, a quite brilliant man, whom has been driven to distraction by recent events. He is currently convalescent in his summer house, surely a state of being we can all aspire towards.

As an additional note for interested parties, the most gracious and noble Count of previous correspondence has safely made his landing in England. No doubt he shall enjoy our unseasonably sunny weather!

My dear brother has been known to remark on occasion that a game is afoot. But my concern this morning is of no game, but a vicious and perfidious plot. A most evil and wicked plot that seeks to disrupt the fabric of civilization and tear apart the bonds of reality itself. I speak of course of the French. Oh, how people mocked when I warned of their tricks. Ho, ho, we are already at war with them, silly sausage. Outraged at the idea that any sausage could be silly, I suffered in silence with the patience of a martyr. The Truth of course did not deny me. Poland, even Poland of all places! Their supposed government suddenly and swiftly took control of their entire economy under the guise of protection, and as the world looked on at the war, no one noticed the threat grow under their very noses. Yes, there is a plot, crossing the length and breadth of Europe. It combines two of the most loathsome creatures in existence, a Frenchman and a Communist. Even now, with their armies supposedly vanquished by gallant Britisher arms (and some unwitting help from the continentals), they are up to their tricks.

A ‘Royalist’ army, why really! In this day and age, they expect us to believe that Bourbons or Bonapartists still live amongst us, plotting in secret to take over the world? Ridiculous. It’s the Communists, I tell you! They armed some drunks from the southern regions, or sent their own soldiers in disguise, and are now insisting from their mouthpieces in Gay Paris for the international community to help ‘them’ deal with the ‘threat’. Worse still, they are also insisting on further international meetings, allegedly to decide the fate of Africa. This combines two tricks into one: it allows them the absurd idea that any part of Africa that the British want might not come to us, and also allow them to seed and infect and whisper into the orifices of innocent Liberals!

    THIS. CANNOT. STAND.

We must come down hard on these tricksy devils, and smash their country into pieces. Then burn the pieces down further. It is the only way to be sure! Belgium will not be considered a separate issue. They made their garlic-reeking bed and they will be forced into it as it too is set alight. We must seize any and all French colonies to keep the helpless natives away from the nasty French savages. I don’t know much or care about the Japanese, and that must mean they are equally evil and wrong, so let us take their islands also.

The only difficulty that I see truly, aside from how we shall find enough kindling for the whole of France, is what to do about the Ottoman Empire (or as they are calling it on the ‘street’, the Rottenman Empire. Schoolboys are frightfully clever these days…). Chiefly, the issue is their European holdings. Greece, a problem child for Europe since before Europe came to be, surely cannot be fully trusted with the defence of all her islands, the seas surrounding them and serving as a bulwark between the Turk and the rest of us. Perhaps as Germany sponsors Bulgaria, we too must sponsor the Greeks, for who knows what they will do without us? Of course, they should give us their colonies in thanks for our benevolence. As for the rest of the Balkans, I think everyone of an intelligent mind wishes to have little to no dealing with that part of the world. Giving them to the in-breds might indeed be necessary, if only because I cannot think of anyone else daft enough to assume control of them all.

I leave you all this time with a warning. The French may be down and seemingly defeated, but a diseased tumour such as theirs cannot be left to fester forever. Sooner or later, they must be lanced and cut away, lest they bring down the whole body of Humanity with them. We must look to our monarchs, and yes, even the Pope, in these uncertain times, to defend us from the growing power of the Communist. The Germans, such as they are, at least have the right idea in that sense, as do, by rights, the Hapsburgs, despite their…proclivity.

All that remains is for me to wish you all a good day, and beware of the shadows that creep.

"Our British friends have occupied France from Dunkirk to Pau and are eliminating the last resistance from Belgium. Our troops have liberated Bulgaria and the rest of the decaying Empire's European lands and are marching in triumph into the Queen of Cities. After the horrors of war, peace is at hand. But what kind of peace? Despite our glorious victories, Japan still reigns supreme in the far East, its barbarous reign of terror over the occupied Korean peoples and unfortunate savages of Borneo persisting, its eyes lingering over China. Our brave and skilled diplomats in Geneva will-and must- ensure that it is held to account. Furthermore, our most noble Emperor has seen the depredations and decay of the vilayet of Bosnia under the rule of the Turk. This must be rectified. The Bosnian people must enjoy the freedoms of a civilized, just monarch, the same freedoms that have been given to all inhabitants of the Duchy of Greater Lebanon..."

In order to quell sinister foreign elements and lingering agents of the Turk, these further security measures will be instituted, in addition to the orders implemented 12th September 1889:
    1. Public meetings in the Duchy are forbidden unless a permit is granted by the appropriate authorities.
    2. All inhabitants of the Duchy are asked to consent and aid with any and all security searches to root out treason and contraband. All goods entering or leaving the cities of the Duchy will be searched.
    3. All persons given official title by the Turkish occupiers are to report to the Imperial Governorate, 3 Sassine Square, Beirut. Failure to do so by 8 February will result in imprisonment.
    4. Sales of guns and other weapons to civilians are hereby illegal. Those found distributing weapons will be executed.

    Peace Conference - Final Proposal
  • Weeks of wrangling, argument and occasional shouting had produced a deal. While full ratification would take several months to work it's way through the various parliaments, assemblies and courts, and a number of satellite sub-treaties would be required to implement all the decisions and tidy up lose ends, the Treaty of Geneva had been agreed.

    Europe
    • The entirety of Alsace-Lorraine to be transferred to German control and given it's correct name Elsass-Lothringen
    • Catalonia to be released from the French Sphere to become an independent power
    The Near-East

    • Bulgaria to be given it's independence under the protections of Germany

    The Americas
    • Saint Pierre and Miquelon, being untidy aberrations, will be transferred to British North America from French control.

It is noted and solemnly agreed that rebellions, revolts and other similar affairs are internal matters, to be dealt with by the nation where they occur and such other powers as they may wish to involve and invite, at the discretion of those powers.

    Entente Powers
    • France, Belgium and the Ottoman Empire, being the principle agents behind the war, shall disarm and pay reparations to the Allied Powers
    • Japan, having declined to engage in the main theatres of combat, shall not be subject to the above terms. But instead shall agree to contain her actives and interventions and not to act outside her existing sphere of influence
    African Congress
    • The High Contracting Powers agree that a congress shall be called, in a neutral venue, in not more than 6 months time, where spheres of influence and the future borders of all colonial, satellite and dominion territories shall be discussed.
    • While all powers will make best endeavour to reach agreement, there shall be no commitment or requirement that a deal shall or must be reached.

Seemed unfair to hit Japan with Great War capitulation when they remain unbeaten (because they didn't fight anyone, this is a Paradox AI afterall ;) ). But they still get hit with a 'Containment' because so many powers wanted it.

No-one is helping France fight the monarchist armies, or any other revolts. The Allied Powers are also making clear they have the right to support either side in the 10th Crusade, but have no plans to right now.

Also Catalonia got freed from the French Sphere, so has a bit more chance to get involved in wars, crises and other events without being bossed about by Paris. I doubt that would actually have happened, but as we have a Catalan paper it seemed appropriate to include it.
