Have their troops just been absolutely nerfed? I had a 4000 man planned invasion army, allied with other petty kings. Basically the Last Alliance of Markarth. Whiterun, which I was invading, sent 2800 men into the Reach. They crushed my vastly superior force. It wasn't even close. I even had 18 marshal generals. I assumed it was because I was attacking. Whatever. So I lose this war.

10 years later, Whiterun invades. I have 2800 men on a hill and am attacked by 2700. ANNIHILATION of my army.

This is insane. Aren't Reachmen supposed to be hard to fight on their own terrain in 4E 200? This is the freaking golden age of the Reach, and they get mopped up like sorry dogs.

I know some of this is likely the pitiful base combat mechanics, but maybe Reachmen generals should be far more likely to get "mountainous terrain" leader or something.

And not just martial skill - some characters can rack up incredible combat traits that totally alter their flank's abilities - a commander with +50% on rough terrain is going to be a heck of a lot better then might otherwise be expected, especially with high martial. I once had a warlord vampire King of the Heartland who racked up such a high combination of combat traits and martial that he could single-handedly defeat Nibenay (well, alright, so he had about 3,000 men with him too, but Nibenay had about 8,000 and I still crushed them). Defensive terrain modifiers also pack an extra punch.

If you attacked a heavy infantry Whiterun army in the mountains lead by a high martial general with rough terrain bonus, you'll likely get trounced even with 3 to 1 odds in your favor. And it would go even worse if your army was mostly light infantry/archers. Gotta be careful about that kind of stuff. Always have greater numbers, good leaders, and force the enemy to engage you when possible, not the other way around.

As far as I could tell, the troop composition was roughly equal, they had more mages. (But only like 30 more). At any rate, I love the mod. It's the baseline combat that is iffy.

Yeah, so it's probably that the commanders on the other side have some incredible combination of combat traits that synergized with the terrain to give you a royal whooping. If you look during combat, you can see how the flank leaders are modifying their troop's abilities. I'll bet you my net worth (nothing) that you'll find that they had some bonus to troop types or terrain. Add to that the bonus for them defending in mountain terrain, and possibly a malus for you crossing a river (I don't remember where the rivers are in Skyrim/Reach), and you'll get crushed every time.

Yeah so I found an amazing thread that broke down the mechanics for me. Apparently the military modifier only helps trigger certain mechanics... anyway, it's a lot more complex than I thought!

Whiterun has the Skyforge it makes their military tech and soldiers better. Sadly Markarth's unique building is +3 defense to your city in the county of Markarth...which tbh is useless because cities are pretty easy to take and if the city is being sieged it means the castle was already taken.

I'd love to see more unique buildings in this mod. Maybe some unique building in the center of Argonia for the Hist. Maybe give the Reachmen some sort of + mages and light infantry building? Im sure there are tons of examples of cool unique buildings.
