What are some good strategies to use with Columbus' Expedition when you are Spain?

I think Colombus went straight to the carbearrean and then came back to Spain. Then from there he used a base to continue his voyages.
Go westwards, colonize the first province u find, use it as a base to discover the rest of the caribbean.
I do it like this... Load on some troopers before you set sail for the new world. Sail west until u discover the first island, unload the troopers and get rid of the natives and raise the chanse of succes of colonisation, then send colonists to that place, meanwhile sail back with Columbus to nearest port to avoid attrition. Upon his return set sail for the New world again. Take a rest in your new port that should have been build by now. After that set sail for the search for the Mayas. Open a route to them so that when ure first conquistador comes along its just to invade them.
Well thats my strategy.
Why don't you go for both of them?
The mayas got a pretty nice possition for furter expansion and warfare in South-America
I didn't even know that Columbus was available in EU1!

Too easy, too many colonies...
Its fun to conquer big empires and look back on them, but to rule one is a different matter...
