Rapid Pulse Laser Alternative?

I have only 55% chance to research rapid pulse laser... if it fails.. its their another good weapon for shooting down rockets (Point defense)?

There's one on the ballistics tree, Phalanx PD. You need to research VRF Systems first.

There's also Phaser PD, but that's very hard to get. Otherwise you'd have to stick to beamers. If you can't get them, make some salvage ships, beat up AI patrols, and hope you get one of the techs!

Yes there is. In combat turn your weapon settings on beam weapons to only target PD, as well as your missiles, which can also shoot down enemy missiles, but not very efficiently. Neutron beams work great though as do some laser weapons put on PD mode. (Xray Beamers). The only downside is you have to swap them between PD and ALL on targeting (or whatever your choice is.)

Shields are also a excellent alternative.

In my experience, they are very good against swarmers.

I haven't seen them yet in SOTS2, but in Prime, I found a few PD ships made extremely short work of swarmers.
