Stanis³aw Maczek was a Polish general. He was commander of the armoured brigade in September 1939 (still only colonel at that time), then commander of the Polish armoured brigade formed in France in 1940 and finally commander of 1st Polish Armoured Division formed in Great Brittain which fought in France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany in 1944 - 1945.

kirponos

I want to add some russian commanders:
Kirponos - commander of Kiev Military District (SouthWest FRont) 1941 KIA put up energetic defense. Was not allowed to retreat by Stalin and Shaposhnikov. Was the only front commander who did not lose his nerve.

Kirponos fought well given the circumstances, but remember he had the bulk of the mechanized/tank divisions and Rundstedt's forces were much weaker than Bock's which helped his situation compared to say, poor Pavlov, who was arrested and shot when Barbarossa was barely 2 weeks old.

Regarding Marshall, he's probably at least a 7.5 to 8 for general with best managerial talents, which is why FDR couldn't afford to lose him and give him a field command.

Alexander doesn't seem to get much of a mention here, though Monty and Auchinleck do. Alexander did much of the ground work in Africa before Montgomery arrived and went on to do a solid job in Italy where he had to put up with Mark Clark's exploits. For me i think Slim would have to be my fave Brit general, adaptable and a great trainer and inspirer of men. I would say more on the general topic but i'm very tired right now. so i wont!

I will tell you this, the "War on Terror" waged by the U.S. and Great Britain, from the air in Afghanistan has completely destroyed the Taliban and has shattered Bin Laden's Al-Queda network's capabilities. THIS, my friends is a war won by air power.

not so, Saudi regime is still there, Pakistani regime is still there, Iraqui regime is still there... "war on terror" is not won yet. not that it can ever be won, imho, unless we also fight the terrorist inside us.

oh, and by the way, what has changed in Afghanistan, woman are still cattle, people are still in the middle ages... just changes name of the regime and its support.but I digress. oh and soviets too "won" in 2 weeks in afghanistan, then it became guerilla... not that this will be the case, i think.

but I grant you that so far, from the West point of view and casuality rate, this was won by air alone, just don't ask anti-taliban afghanis dead about their point of view.. :D :D

Savage? Well, I don't have heard, that many Finnish war veterans would have called the Russians as savage...
(

I did not mean the individual Russian soldier but Russia us such,
according to my basic opinion Russia have always been a savage enemy since 12th century.

I'm sorry I wrote direct out of my mind and feelings when I read the "hit-lists" and did not find Mannerheim. So I never consulted the winter war part of my library about Tolvajärvi.

About the French they had equipment and manpower enough to fight off the Germans but lacked leadership and moral to do it.
You lacked modern equipment but had moral and leadership during this hard years in your history.

Finlands brave fight during the winter war saved Scandinavia from a horror scenario after the war.

Imagine that Sweden hade declared war on Russia in December 1939.
Stalin and Hitler had divided whole northern Europe in 1940. Then we have been "liberated" by the Germans in 1941. And what have happend in 1944/45. We have been "liberated" to be prisoned in the sameway as the people of central Europe.
