So what happened? I landed in Australia and took Nanjing and progressively as I advanced land randomly became Japanese instead of Australian. I still got over 50% war participation (and around 1% axis losses) but out of all the retarded mistakes the game makes in terms of land control this is by far the most annoying (right after axis Poland getting sliced in half and given to the USSR which literally made me stop playing). I was using mods but only those which affect visuals.

Yep, getting the territory you've occupied randomly ganked by the AI is extremely annoying.
I don't know why it happens.
I suspect its possible that the AI decides its "entitled" to some territory, based on war score. And presumably because it is assumed that a human player won't give up territory if asked, the AI simply takes it.

I guess thats possible, but If I ended up having 52% war participation they shouldn't really decide that they deserve the land logically, although it could be noted that I was only able to field 20 divisions (going for the 40 combat width) and only suffered around 1/100 of Japan's losses. No strategic bombing was conducted. But if I still got so much for occupation that must mean the territory that was stollen was still technicaly mine... otherwise my war participation would have been far lower especially since I took over Nanjing which made me go from 0% to like 30% in seconds and then that land was gifted to the ai, and later I believe most of all territory was captured from "Japanese" territory.

You will only assume land for yourself as long as you are advancing from either a naval landing or your own territory.
As long as you are moving forward from an allies territory any land you take will be handed over to him, however it will not show up as his until the entire state has been occupied.

I took much care to make sure I was advancing from my land only since I made an amphibious landing near Nanjing. In fact, I noticed when I was advancing from my own territory onto Chinese land which was adjacent to Japanese Japan got it most of the time which was also greatly annoying. After that I made sure that my advance was carried out from my territory unto land that wasn't adjacent to the Japanese land. Before I took that first screen shot the Japanese land between my two strips of land belonged to me- it auto transferred to Japan despite being taken by naval invasion without any Japanese support.

No, that's not it.

As an example, in my game as Britain I went to war with Germany over Czechoslovakia.
After taking some territory, I asked France to give me Wurtenburg and they graciously complied. So thence I pushed forward from my territory, taking Bavarai and Austria, and eventually linking up with the Czecks (who were sitting behind their borders doing SFA) before turning north.
Anyway, I've pushed right up through Franken and into Thuringa, when suddenly the Czechs just gank Lower Austria.
