Hello,

I've been experiencing crashes every few months/years in game. Can't deduce any reproducable issue that's causing it, it just happens after a random amount of time.

I've tried reinstalling twice. Did it as instructed in several posts:
Those errors are normal and nothing to do with your problem.

Just to be sure, here's what I mean by a full clean re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "delete local content" in Steam-CK2
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- start the game with no mods active and test

One thing I've noticed was that after I believe the first time it crashed my ironman save (I uploaded it if anyone wants to test it) showed up with the "cannot earn achievements because data has been altered", paraphrased. I don't particularily care for the achievements but that seemed odd to me.

Another thing I've noticed after the first reinstall was while I wanted to start a new game to test, the game crashed during year selection. This one's reproducable for me, clicking through years or set selectable periods fast makes the game crash rather quickly.

I've also tried running the game through the exe alone as mentioned here: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?829252-Game-random-crash

Here's all the usuals:

Has this happened ever since you've had the game, or only since what change or update?

What version # and checksum do you see a/ in the launcher and b/ in the main game menu?

I've also tried running the game through the exe alone as mentioned here
... with what outcome? Any different?

Edit that settings.txt:
refreshRate=60
fullScreen=yes
borderless=no
- any better?

What anti-virus do you have? Can you try a run with it disabled, as a test?

Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU)
1/ before starting the game up and
2/ immediately after a crash. If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install

This first started happening since I started playing the game again a day or two ago. Last time I played before that was around the time charlemagne came out, iirc. (last save says 26th of september 2014)

Running the game through the exe did nothing, though I only tried briefly, will try again and let you know.

Edited setting in settings.txt, testing now.

No anti virus, used to use antivir but removed that ages ago.

Temps are fine, I run diagnostics on my other screen. The cpu usage is quite unusually high during loading (80%+ usage on all cores) but in game it's normal. Temps are around 50 while in game and during the crashes; 40-45 idle. GPU never goes over 47° at ~50 usage.

----
Oh yeah, checksum is MMUR version 2.3.2

Neither worked, crashes either way.
Editing the txt did not change the game to fullscreen, I changed it in game and then tested; to no avail.

Edit: tried a few more times, it seems to happen predominantly while clicking counties. Not much to go by but maybe it helps.

Can you attach here as a file the whole dxdiag.txt please?

Is there anything in the Windows Event Viewer about these crashes?

Do you also get such crashes in, say, the EU4 demo?

Editing the txt did not change the game to fullscreen
Erm, what? Did doing it in-game change settings.txt then?

Downloading the demo right now, will report back later.

Yes, changing the setting in game changed the settings.txt.
I tried again, and this time it worked after editing the file. Musta goofed it up the first time, sorry for that.

Played the EU4 demo for a while now, works fine.

Those are radically different memory addresses, this is not the game doing this I'll bet. Quite what it is I do not know.

If you exit Steam and just run ck2game.exe does that go OK?

They are few and far between though, the first one I mentioned is definitely the most common (14 times). b20ef occurs 3 times and the other two once each.

If I exit steam it still crashes. Behaves the exact same.

Edit: after looking over the logs some more and trying to remember what was causing them, I came across something. Remember when I said that I could reproduce a CTD by rapidly clicking through year selections when starting a new game? I did it again and looked at the event viewer afterwards, turns out Fault offset: 0x000b20ef is caused by exactly that, while Fault offset: 0x000d0424 is being the one that just happend randomly during gameplay, clicking counties or something like that.

Can not remember what caused the other two though. The two hangs were no crashes. They might have been me force quitting the game during loading the game as I assumed it was freezing up. Turns out the game just takes a solid while to load, especially with the dynastic coat of arms packs.
The hangs happened on the 17th, the crashing started on the 20th.

Another thing. The time stamp for 0x56ff8b90 is time stamp: 0x54bd4941 , while for every other fault (all three types) it is time stamp: 0x54b6957a. Not sure what that means:

Faulting application name: Steam.exe, version: 2.58.33.56, time stamp: 0x54bd4941
Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x56ff8b90
Faulting process id: 0x13ac
Faulting application start time: 0x01d034cf320ada1d
Faulting application path: D:\Steam\Steam.exe
Faulting module path: unknown
Report Id: c37b2744-a0d2-11e4-b5ac-20cf3019692b

It just now occured to me that this fault is a steam error rather than a game error. I really need more sleep.

I assume that you will recommend the whole clearing the steam folder thing next. Question there: can I keep steamapps and move it back in afterwards? I kind of have over 600GBs of games that I'd have to redownload with my awful connection otherwise :p

If I recall correctly moving steamapps back should work fine.

You don't have to move /SteamApps/ . Just uninstall this game in Steam, manually delete anything left over in Steam/SteamApps/common/ck2 and documents/paradox/ck2 (except save games), then delete everything in the Steam folder except /SteamApps/ and steam.exe , and then run steam.exe manually to rebuild it.

Went through it, didn't work.
Same crash, this time just while sitting there doing nothing. Happened within the first 10 minutes of playing. The game ticks over to a new day and it just crashes.

So I've tried going back to an older patch. Latest version possible through steam seems to be 2.2.1 (CPOO), and this version works perfectly. The loading screen on startup takes just as long as it does with 2.3.2 (MMUR) but at significantly lower CPU usage (only one pysical core is 80%+ used instead of all physical and logical cores). The game generates about 30%+ less CPU usage
Another thing: I can for the life of me not CTD the game by clicking fast through dates and starting bookmakrs like I could in the latest version. Runs rock solid.

Maybe the latest patches causes some instability with older CPU's? Maybe some .Net update that has issues with older cpu's? I'm asking because me and several peope with first gen i7's have had issues (freezing of the whole system) with Elite:Dangerous as of last december, which coincides with CK2's 2.3 update. Some people said that disabling hyperthreading on their cpu's fixed the issue.

Just a shot in the dark here, can't explain this any other way. The game runs perfectly as it used to on 2.2.1, just sadly not my current save and obviously none of the patch improvements or way of life :(

Yes, the issue with CTDs when mucking around with the bookmarks is known to be a problem in 2.3.x, I don't think that has anything to do with your issue.

There's a slightly newer video driver now, may as well try that
http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/81390

Do you have access to a different machine to try it on? Just to show that 2.3.2 does work.

I has one person delete some VisualC++ updates from the Control Panel and fix a problem like this. What does yours show listed there?

I'll try the driver, thanks.

I'd have to ask someone for a laptop, I can do that tomorrow (it's late here), but what is that going to accomplish? I'm sure the game works fine on other systems, wouldn't there be a ton of complaints about crashes like mine otherwise?

I have plenty of VisualC++ installs, 21 to be exact: http://i.imgur.com/6YHcw8v.jpg
Any clue which ones specifically? Just uninstalling random ones can cause more issues

Installed the driver and started a new game just in case it's the save screwing it up after all; didn't work, still crashes after a while.

Also, the reason why my ironman save has achievements disabled seems to be caused by the crash, the game thinks I'm trying to cheat my way into loading I suppose. :/

Well that's how I think, yes :) But a lot of people here need to be convinced that the problem is likely an issue local to their machine, so that's something I often suggest when the usual stuff hasn't helped.

I have plenty of VisualC++ installs, 21 to be exact: http://i.imgur.com/6YHcw8v.jpg
Any clue which ones specifically? Just uninstalling random ones can cause more issues
The specific one was I think a patch (KBnnnnnnn) to one of the modules, but you don't have that listed there.

What you DO have are a lot of duplicates (eg 3 x 2005 Visual C++ with different dates). I don't know how that even comes to be; I have 15 modules listed like that but they are all different in some way. Quite what to do about that short of a full Windows re-install I don't know, it might need some professional advice there from a Windows expert.

Also, the reason why my ironman save has achievements disabled seems to be caused by the crash, the game thinks I'm trying to cheat my way into loading I suppose. :/
I still don't see why that wold be ...

Well that's how I think, yes :) But a lot of people here need to be convinced that the problem is likely an issue local to their machine, so that's something I often suggest when the usual stuff hasn't helped.
----

I still don't see why that wold be ...

Well the problem is only occuring on the latest patch from what I can see, so it's not only my systems fault :p
But yeah. All I can really do now is hope that what the issue was gets fixed in a future patch, or I'll just have to live with restarting the game every few minutes to hours, it's not the worst thing imaginable but it still kind of sucks :/

----

I dunno, I made a new save on the latest version as mentioned, and that one was 'corrupted' (ironman achievments disabled) as well after the first crash.

Any idea what could cause the save to be corrupted like this; since apparently force quitting ck2 doesn't usually corrupt saves like this (did some testing there today). I know editing chracters in the ruler dsigner makes ironman achievements unavailable, but this is different.

Of course that's one thing I can't test here, since anyone else's Ironman saves will show that way for me. So that's a possibility, that it has not recorded your ID in the save game properly, or you've changed your ID in some respect.
