So, as the title says, CKII will always randomly freeze for me. Sometimes it's within 10 minutes, other times within 30, but I've never managed to play the game for more than I believe 2 hours.

As far as I recall I did not start having these crashing problems until the Old Gods DLC. Prior to that, I would not have random crashes. If it matters, I play the game exclusively in borderless window. Also, EUIV gives me the same problems, but I can play that game for much longer periods of time, maybe say 2 or 3 hours before it crashes. By comparison, Victoria 2 NEVER crashes, so maybe my computer just doesn't like the Clausewitz Engine or something.

Solutions I have already tried:
4gb Patch on CK2game.exe
Running CK2game.exe as administrator
Reinstalling the game (Numerous times)
Adding the game files to be excluded by Avast

It's just really annoying when I can only play the game for a maximum of an hour at a time.

Please try a full clean re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "delete local content" in Steam-CK2
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- DO NOT apply the "4gb" fix to ck2game.exe as it does not need it, and hasn't for like 2 years

IF the problem continues, Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU)
1/ before starting the game up and
2/ after say 20 minutes' play. If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install

checksum
Here in lies what I guess may be the problem. When I search through setup.log, I cannot find anything labeled "checksum." When I search for "checksum" it simply says it cannot be found.

Truly though, regardless of if you find the problem, I'm really grateful that you're even trying to help.

Here's your problem, I think. Either the game or Steam is running in compatibility mode, and only gets access to 1gb of memory.

Right-click on both steam.exe and ck2game.exe, properties, compatibility. There should be nothing checked in there, except maybe the Run as Admin option. Uncheck any other box that is checked, hit Apply, then Apply to All users.

I have the EXACT SAME problem!!

EDIT: After looking at Nizhny's computer specs, I think this has something to do with AMD APU's because I have A6 3620 with HD 6530d and I am facing the exact same type of problem. It seems that Pdox has a lot of problem with APU's becasue I faced the same type of problem in HoI and EUIV too. Also CPU-Z does not give me accurate results because the I oc'ed my CPU to 2.70ghz and it still shows the old clock rate (2.20Ghz).

Probably 1/3 or 1/4 of our million-plus CK2 customers use AMD. I think we'd know by now if none of them could run any PDS game without crashing ... !

I know it's tempting to think that because you have the same symptoms you must have the same cause, but it's often not so. I'd suggest you too start your own thread with full system and problem details.

That's how it should look. I'm surprised that hasn't helped actually. Is that what you're saying, that has made no difference at all?

When you say you're sure the temperatures aren't the problem - why are you sure of that? What actual temps are you getting, for both CPU and GPU?

Uhm, There's a difference between a CPU and an APU. AMD is not equal to APU FYI. AMD is just a standalone CPU while an APU is a CPU with built-in graphics in the CPU (Thus the HD 6530d or the HD 6550d) . Not a lot of people that use APU's for gaming and many upgrade to an actualy GFX card. It's mostly poor people like me don't bother upgrading it because I/we don't do hardcore gaming.

Because my GPU temp at resting is 7 degrees Celsius, and 35C after the 20 minutes of play.

Similarly, my CPU after 20 minutes is 42C, and 39C during resting. It barely goes up.

I knew it wasn't the temperature because my computer is, frankly, capable of running harder games for as long as I want to play them, unimpeded. It's only Crusader Kings II that I have any problem with AT all. Even Europa Universalis IV is fine. I just assumed it had something to do with Clausewitz, but EUIV doesn't crash.

speedfan showed screwed up temps for both, I guess. I thought it was just the CPU temp it was screwing up.

Resting GPU is 22C.

You could try GPU-Z instead of Speedfan.

I see you have USB speakers as your default sound output. We had one case a few weeks ago where they were causing terrible lag and jerky display and play. Not the same symptoms as you are seeing, but interesting. Can you try directing the sound output to the Realtek speakers instead? And/or playing with no sound (settings.txt - master_volume=0 ) and see if that's any different?

Sorry I wasn't more clear; the GPU temp in my last post was with GPU-Z. Also, I know it's not the audio device because I've had this issue since prior to acquiring the USB speakers.

Playing with no sound I still experienced the crash.

Ok well I frankly have no idea what your problem is. Do these crashes occur on any particular event or action in the game? Are they reproducible from a particular save file?

When one happens, can you reload the game immediately? Or do you need to reboot, or wait for a while? Do they happen with EU4 also?

What if you exit Steam and play by running ck2game.exe?

Nizhny, What version of Catalyst Control Centre do you have? I had 14.12 with Omega and it seemed that it was the problem. I downgraded my CCC to 14.4 and have not faced CTD yet. Try to downgrade your drivers and see if there is any change.
