When I choose random sponsor, commander, etc. I still get all the effects listed of a specific choice, spoiling all the mystery of what I'm gonna get. I mean it's still random, I guess, but it kinda defeats the purpose IMO.

All it should so is randomize the selection. How would a colony function without knowing who their sponsor and Commander are?
