In the game armour is a commodity. Armour repairs are so trivial that they are free and instant. How can any force, even a badly funded one, NOT have their armour in good shape?

Furthermore the mechanic leads to weird situations where you get heavy and assault Mechs basically for free because you can just precision shot them to death in a single round.

I do get the idea that badly funded units like pirates will have difficulties keeping their Mechs in best shape, but it really shouldn't be armour that's failing. I'd propose that components should be randomly damaged or destroyed on the Mechs. Weapons, heat sinks and other components are a lot harder to source than armour. Also ramshackled Mechs could start only with 50% ammunition or no ammunition at all.

Maybe it would make more sense to have the degradation percentage applied to the internal structure instead of the armor. That keeps things simple instead of trying to tune a dynamic damaged equipment system. Imagine trying to balance a HBK with 1 damaged weapon, if the AC/20 is damaged or disabled that's a huge swing from just breaking one of the lasers.
