Chapter I: The Duke and the House of Poitiers

The palace radiant in the center of Agen, one of the homes of the Dukes of Aquitaine, the most beautiful and majestic court of Southern France, and in the kingdom it was second only to the Royal palace. A home of arts in a time of darkness and obcurantism, a place where women were beautiful and poweful making men develop complex courting rules to gain their favour when all of Europe considered them little more than sinful demons, all of this thanks to the proud House of Poitiers or Ramnulfids as they were also known.
He was there standing near the doors, of medium height, short brown hair and a big moustache, a light olive skin much like that of the people of Aquitaine, his clothes were simple but impressive, thin he seemed to be someone moderate in his eating habits, his name Gui-Geoffroi, or Guillaume VIII Duke of Aquitaine.

For a moment he had stopped to apreciate the place, sighed and lost himself on his toughts...
Aquitaine the most powerful duchy of France, yet it was not french, the Aquitainians were different, they had their own customs their own language, and were passionate contrary to the cold franks of the north, and yet politics binded these two people for ages now, each and every time with frankish dominance, would this be changed one day ?

But those were distant dreams, perhaps his heirs would change that, but his time was nearing and end, and the Lord had not yet blessed the Duke with a heir, divorced one time with no results, married another with only a daughter Agnes being produced by the union, he had to keep trying God wouldn't abandon a faithful servant who lent himself and his armies to help in the Reconquista, who was allied with the fellow christians of Aragon and Barcelona so many times.
No, the outlook was golden, if Matheode wouldn't give him a heir then he would divorce one more time and find a younger and more fertile woman, the problem surely wasn't his, he just chose the wrong women to marry, he was certain of that, and that would be a mistake he wouldn't repeat again.
He then remembered he had an appointment with the advisors and passed through the doors of the palace, leaving his doubts and ambitions behind it...

(OOC just an intro on the Duke's dreams and worries)

41 and no heirs looks bad.

Are you trying to keep all the forthcoming Dukes numbered?
Guillaume the VIII is quite a achievement, but Aquitania is maybe the oldest Duchy in West-Frankenreich.
Although Burgundy is quite old too, and Provence.

Yeah I will try to keep them numbered for as long as Duke of Aquitaine is their main title, next update will be coming in a few hours, and that's where the game will actually start

EDIT: LOL! I said the next update was coming in a few YEARS!!!:rofl:

Chapter II: The Duchy of Aquitaine

The Duke pasaed through the doors, they were all there, not many were of note at this time but a few were worthy mentioning for the prestige they held in the Duchy, some even occupying important positions
He looked at them examining each one, their sucesses and failures

1ebles.jpg

Errr...(temporary) Marshal Ebles de Gourdon

"Marshal" Eubles, yes the man was pitiful on his job but he was the only man of renown on the court beside the Duke himself so for now...he was the only chance for the post, Guillaume prayed that God would eventually send someone better. Then perhaps he could serve as a steward he seemed to be good at counting the amount of men in the army and calculating how many the duchy could recruit for a war.

1guilhem.jpg

Archbishop Guilhèm de Turenne

The good Archbishop, he had already divorced the Duke one time, and if Matheode failed to produce a heir for him then he would have to prepare another divorce. And though he was a man of faith there were also rumours of his hundreds of bastard sons and daughters with many nuns and servants, some even said that he liked boys as well as girls so great was his lust. But all in all he was a good man that could be trusted.

1matheode.jpg

Matheode de la Marche, so far still Duchess of Aquitaine

Ugly, miserable witch thought the Duke. How could he have trusted the Archbishop to find me a good new wife after his divorce ? It was folly Guilhem had certainly laughed of his face when he presented the creature.
The only joy of the marriage was the little Agnes which was now turning into a fine young woman, but it wasn't enough, the Duke needed a boy and he would divorce and marry again ten thousand times if necesary.

1matre.jpg

Agnes de Macon, mother of the Duke

The old woman was still fine and reasonably young looking in her 70s, certainly a saint no common woman could live so much and even better she was still working as Chancellor of the realm and helped organise the diplomats.
Such a good woman, she raised him well and taught his so much, ahh well, he knew she wouldn't live much longer...

1ermessinde.jpg

Ermessinde de Lorraine, Spymistress

She could've been a fine wife, if she wasn't so fat and if she wasn't getting old, it was a decent woman to have around though, reasonably talented in mostly everything she could serve as temporary advisor in almost any function. He was glad to have the german here, though her accent still sounded horrible and after all these year both her french and her aquitainian had barely improved.

"So" said the Duke in his strong voice
"Any news from the provinces ?"
"Yes my lord, we have finished draining some marshes and fens in Saintonge and the province is prospering as a result" replied Ermessinde
"Excellent Ermessinde...now wasn't informing me of that a job for my dearest wife ?" Matheode stood silently for a moment and then with rage on her eyes and voice she spoke
"I know what you're planning Guillaume!!! You won't get aw..." but it was too late the Duke had signed the guards to take her to her room and lock her for the next few hours
"Now may we proceed, my mother do you have any news from the foreign nations ?"
"Yes my son, the Saxon Earl of Northumberland, Morcar Leofricson, is rebelling against King William of England, they say that the Earl of Lancaster may soon join the rebellion"
"Folly, this will only serve to completely eradicate the saxon influence in the island and empower the english crown, if this all then you're dismissed I'll see you all soon and hopefully without that witch"
And so the Duke left the room with the still shocked courtiers...

How did they get the news from England so fast and detailed?

Unknown to many is the vast spy network of the Duchy that communicates through the use of specially bred mutant messenger pidgeons :D
kidding, I am using nofog so I can manipulate events to fit the story, so far it will be of lil use but later it will be essencial to my plans ;)

Chapter III: Family

1daughter.jpg
1death.jpg

Time passed and the young Agnes had finally made 16, her personality was formed and she developed into a wise and studious woman with a taste for court intrigue, being beautiful and cunning she quickly organised a group of devouted followers which soon became one of the most important factions of her father's court.
Her influence being streghtened by the death of her grandmother which had the same name and similar mindset, the once members of the old woman quickly joining the sect of the younger Agnes, and so day by day the Duke's daughter began to have great influence in the decisions of the Duchy, and many of the faction's members quickly seized important position throughout Aquitaine.

1queenleon.jpg
1rivalry.jpg

The powerful King Alphonso of León, was needing a wife, the head of the proud Jimenez family was young and strong but had no heirs, and so Duke Guillaume in decided to offer his prestigious daughter in marriage, having heard much about the beauty and wisdom of the young girl the King agreed and thus Agnes was made Queen of Leon.
Both parties celebrated the union and the Duke himself was present at the marriage in the city of León with many members of the Aquitainian court, during the festivities however the King insulted the Duke in private talk and said he was lucky he accepted such an important offer from a simple powerless duke of a lower dynasty.
Enraged the Duke left the celebrations and causing a great turmoil in the party.

1divorce.jpg

1wife.jpg

Stressed with the outcome of his daughter's marriage and not bearing the fact he was heirless and the endless complains from his wife, Guillaume decided to divorce for the second time, he forced the Archbishop to not only accept it and make it official but he also forced him to prepare the new marriage with a young minor noble from Béarn named Gerbèrga de la Roche Aymon.
The Duke soon fell in love with his new wife as she was much better than his previous two wives, and cared not for Matheode's fate as a nun, he knew any children born from his new union might be contested by the Pope but he was more than willing to "convince" his Holiness when the time came, and spent all his time "working" on a heir.

I'm enjoying the AAR so far; please continue. I think Aquitaine has a lot of possibilities and I'd like to see how you do. It's a brave choice to choose a dynasty with no heirs and an aging duke - good luck!
