Ramifications of an EU4 playthrough: The Ethiopian Empire

The world in 1819:

The Ethiopian Empire dominates Africa and the slave export. The only truly independent countries that remain there are Tlemcen in the north and the tribes west of Mali. The latter is allied with Ethiopia, as are Kongo and Syria. Arabia is a conflict zone between Oman and Syria on one side and Persia and its vassal Hedjaz on the other. The Ottoman Empire has fallen over a century ago and its successor state Ramazan has become a republic, supported by the Russian Empire.

Most of Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia have been influenced by the west, importing better weapons and adopting new ways. Japan is a Catholic republic, having to deal with constant religious unrest and an Ainu revolt in the north. The Ming are losing a war against the Sibir Sultanate, destablising their western provinces.

In Europe there's an alliance between France, Tuscany, Naples and England. The former two are ruled by surviving members of the Palaiologos dynasty. They're constantly fighting what remains of the Spanish Empire - there are constant rebellions in the colonies and parts of Catalonia have broken free.


That's some small info about the map. So what do you think, how will this world progress further? Africa has become a center of modernisation instead of the technologically backwards continent it was in our timeline. How would this affect, for example, the Victorian Era? What cultural changes would probably happen, especially in the Americas which is far more diverse here?
And if there was a world war, what would probably cause it and what alliances would emerge?

I guess Sibir would be soon divided between Ming, Russia and Persia. Spanish Empire is falling and AngloFrench alliance looks super powerful.

Ming is in decline. They're one of the few countries resisting modernisation - contrary to Sibir, so they're getting decimated in their current war and there are rebellions in Indochina and Tibet. Russia is currently intervening in a conflict in India, with Persia on the other side. Sibir actually looks like it would come out on top in the long term while its neighbours cripple each other.

It's also interesting that most oft the Christian superpowers have at least one non-Christian ally. The Anglo-French alliance is allied with Brunei, the Russians support the Republic of Ramazan and Ethiopia's guaranteeing Mali and Morea.

Probably in Budapest. Most of Hungary is divided between Poland and Naples, and what remains of it is in a personal union with the ruler of Russia. These Hungarians can't be happy about it.

Also, Ethiopia is the main producer of slaves - while Portugal's the main trader. And Kongo, Ethiopia's ally, abolished slavery, so either the empire will follow their lead in that or there will be some inter-African conflict about slavery.

Oh man, it's this thread type again. I quite enjoyed your previous threads of this nature. I suspect there might be conflict between Naples and Ramazan in the upcoming years (perhaps over trade coming out of the Black Sea), which might lead to a first world war. It might be one the Ethiopian Empire might sit and watch, though, unless it interferes with the global trade enough for them to get involved. I would need to know more about who is allied to who to make a more in-depth guess.

There are a lot of crossing alliances. Naples is allied with at least Venice, Savoy and France, if I remember correctly, while France is also allied with England and Tuscany. Ramazan is allied with Persia and Russia. Ethiopia is mainly allied with neighbours and/or Mediterranean countries: Mali, Kongo, Syria and Morea. There was an Ethiopian-Spanish alliance a century ago, but after being dragged into every single independence war, the empire put an end to that. There's the possibility of an Ethiopian-Algerian alliance, despite the fact that Libyia was carved out of territories conquered from the Algerians.
There also was a long-standing rivalry between Portugal and Ethiopia, but that also seems to have ended a few years ago - would make sense, I guess. The Portuguese are the main profiteers from the African slave trade.

And yes, a world war would probably start in the Balkans - again. The Tsar is currently king of Hungary and most of its territory is occupied by either Poland or Naples - and Ramazan is a Russian ally. So you'd have at least France and half of Italy against Ramazan, Russia and Persia. Ethiopia would possibly get involved, if Naples tried to invade the Sultanate of Morea or Sicily - the island was subjugated by Ethiopia a few years after it declared independence from Spain - a century later if was formally integrated into the empire and fortified to strenghten the empire's dominance in the Mediterrenean, which is surely the main reason why their relations with France aren't that good. The Ethiopians beat them in the colonial race in South America and while the English would have interest in the Ethiopian colonies in the Phillipines and south of Sumatra.

I'm not sure about the Holy Roman Empire, though.

I could have built a larger, but I simply forgot. The old fleet I had for the Mediterrenean was destroyed during the liberation of Libya - because the Algerian fleet was larger than anticipated.

I mostly concentrated on the "modern world" of this setting, i.e. westernised powers in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
