The Ragusa node should be abolished and its provices added to the Venice, Wien, and Constantinople nodes; and the Krakow node should take some provinces from the Wien and Constantinople nodes to prevent them from becoming too big.

No need for such a drastic change. Just cut the Ragusa -> Wien link, and Ragusa will be fine.

Better yet, the devs could take a long hard look at the caravan power system, and ask themselves if it really makes sense for the HRE Kleinstaaterei to absolutely swamp the major powers wherever there's an inland trade link (sometimes including links that are nowhere near Germany). The unicorn puke trade power pie chart in the OP is a classic example of how this works out in practice.

What does it mean to 'be pushed through Asia'?
Mexico can be steered towards Japan, and California can be steered towards the node above Japan. It is theoretically possible to push this trade through Asia and end up in Ragusa, but it requires going through Constantinople and then Central Asia. And if you don't dominate all the nodes along the way you will lose some trade to other nations. Also the Rio Grande node flows into Mexico so that makes three New World nodes that can be steered across the Pacific.

That seems utterly inefficient. So, basically there is nothing I can do to make Ragusa the most valuable CoT in the world?
You're right it is inefficient. You can make Ragusa the richest node but it requires conquering a lot of land in Asia, primarily India and the East Indies.

I'd also like to add that you don't necessarily need a favourable trade setup to profit from new world colonization. You can also make a lot of money from tariffs, so if you feel like it colonization is a valid strategy no matter where your home trade node is located.

As others have said, you can do it in theory, but Ragusa is an awful trade node. It would be like doing the Frozen Assets achievement, except more work and you don't get a badge for it. As Ragusa (the country), if you want trade to flow into the Adriatic, your best bet is to kill Venice and set up shop there. Long-range trade (i.e. from the Indian Ocean) should not even touch Ragusa if possible - it's better to send it via Alexandria -> Venice so you never have to deal with caravans.

On the colonization front, if you go the high-tariff route it's actually better *not* to have your trade hub downstream of the colonies. That way, instead of getting treasure fleets, you get to tariff gold mines (no inflation for you and it multiplies the profits according to your tariff efficiency). Unfortunately, most nodes are downstream of Mexico, so you have to get a bit creative to dodge treasure fleets from there, but certainly the South American gold can be harvested without treasure fleets. Also, if you make a really high tariff colony in the Caribbean, it can be better to steer your trade there (so the CN collects -> tariff efficiency magic -> profit!) rather than steering it towards your own territory.
